  • A fund raising brochure - including perhaps Zola's first reference to the events of his seminal work "Germinal"

The brochure contains drawings by the best-known illustrators of the day, as well as the programme for the party held on 7 and 8 June 1884 in the Bois de Boulogne. The aim of the party was to raise funds to set up a Caisse des victimes du devoir (Victims of Duty Fund), which was set up in 1885. It was intended to help people injured in an act of devotion or their families (in the event of death) and to compensate victims of disasters. First edition. A scarce item, we can find no copies for sale, and no WorldCat record. The only copy we can find is at the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris. 14 leaves (28 pages) irregularly numbered, [ii], 1-2, [ii], 3-18, [ii], 19-22. pp. It would appear that the brochure was originally a soft cover, and that the stiff buckram (without any titles or decoration) was a later addition for protection. Coloured lithographic title (or front cover). Followed by full page reproductions of art works, and a number of letters and poems of support. Including a short letter by Emile Zola. This tells of his meeting a miner who had rescued his colleagues, immortalised in "Germinal" the following year. Zola had visited the "Compagnie des mines d'Anzin" during a major strike which began in February 1884 and lasted for 56 days. This means Zola must have visiting in February or March. Zola began work on Germinal in April 1884. This brochure was printed at the end of May 1884. We cannot find an earlier reference of Zola's visits to the mines, so we are confident that this was the first mention he made of the miners and their struggles. The serialisation of Germinal began in November 1884. 410 by 310mm (16¼ by 12¼ inches). Couverture souple / bougran rigide.

The whole is bound together as a prize binding from a Den Bosch "Nuttige en Beeldende Kunsten" (School of the visual arts) for 1887/8. This has deteriorated over the years, but has recently been restored, with a new spine and casing, the original front board has been laid onto the front board. Modern gilt titles to the spine. New end papers. The different artists of these sheets had great freedom in their design, the layout was predetermined in these cases. Usually a couple was depicted in typical fashion and costume without overlap. Hairstyle, jewellery and clothing were recreated in great detail by various artists by studying tombs, mosaics, frescoes and paintings. 350 by 225mm (13¾ by 8¾ inches).

350 x 225 mm (13¾ x 8¾ pouces).

Toulouse: J.M. Douladoure, 1820. A nice copy of this first edition. Signed by the author opposite the title page, with a dedication to a Doctor Lallemand. A treatise on the history and nature of hospitals / hospitality in ancient times. The binding is an attractive half leather with marbled boards. gilt decoration to the spine with a burgundy label. Six panels to the spine. There is a loss of half a panel of the spine leather. Slight bumping and rubbing to the binding otherwise. Slight weakening to the front hinge. Marbled end papers. The title page has had almost half of it cut out, but has been replaced professionally with similar paper at a later date (see photograph). There is also a location stamp to the top of the title page. To the next page (introduction) there is a small circular stamp. Somewhat obscured and un identifiable. This is repeated a couple of times throughout the book. Otherwise clean and tidy throughout the work, with just a touch of foxing. Frizac (1772-1865) was a native of Toulouse and surgeon. From 1808 to 1814 he was head of the secretariat of the Grand Duchy of Florence, in charge of the mendicity department. Louis XVIII appointed him a counseiller to the Prefecture of Toulouse. As well as this work on hospitals, he wrote a work on Prisons. 140 pages. 200 by 125mm (7¾ by 5 inches). Conforms to OCLC: 23358521.

140 pages. 200 par 125mm (7¾ par 5 pouces). Conforme à OCLC : 23358521.
