Clean tidy copy, with a little bumping to the edges of the binding. Inside the book is clean, but with moderate foxing to the pages throughout. The plates are clean. Pagination is in three equal portions, without separate titles; 80, 80, 80 pp. 270 x 180 mm (10¾ x 7 inches). Pas de date, mais vers 1860. Avec 12 lithographies en couleurs ; l'un est lâche, mais tient toujours. Jolie toile noire avec des motifs dorés et colorés sur les plats et le dos. London: 1844. A large Lithograph of a banquet for Daniel O'Connell. Chalk lithograph by an unknown engraver and publisher. C1844, Although not stated on the image, this almost certainly represents the banquet given in honour of O'Connell at the Covent Garden theatre on March 13th 1844. This was reported on in the Illustrated London News of the time, which bore a much smaller illustration. An article in the Times recorded that the dinner was given "to show," as the announcements expressed it, "the admiration entertained by Englishmen for his constant and consistent advocacy of the rights and privileges of Irishmen, for more than 40 years." This was a fascinating time in Irish Politics. Following the massive rallies and gatherings in Ireland to obtain the repeal of repressive legislation, O'Connell was arrested and charged with "creating discontent and disaffection" among the Queen's subjects. The trial began in January 1844 and O'Connell was of course found guilty in February. Sentence was deferred, and O'Connell began the equivalent of a "grand progress" through England, and to Westminster, where he presented a bill to Parliament. In May (after this banquet) he was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. The Covent Garden theatre burnt down in the 1850's. Some pencil notes to the rear. A little marginal nicking to the corners and small closed tear. Single pin hole to the side. 280 by 410mm (11 by 16¼ inches).

London: William Heinemann, 1898. First Edition. Hardback. A decent, and slightly repaired copy of this set of lithographed illustrations by Nicholson. The binding has been restored with a cloth backstrip, and reinforced to the front and rear hinge inside as well. A little rubbing to the edges of the boards, with some slight chipping. Inside, the pages and plates are in very nice condition, with just a little of darkening to the text pages. 12 colour plates, title and a further 10 leaves of text, including a final leaf with a facsimile of a hand written poem by Henley. Adverts to rear. 340 by 290mm (13½ by 11½ inches). In this first edition, the bus driver only appears on the front board, not as a plate inside. Illustrations include the Guardsman, Hawker, Beef-Eater, Sandwich-Man, Coster, Lady, Bluecoat Boy, Policeman, Newsboy, Drum-Major, Flower Girl, Barmaid, each with the London location they are to be found in.

Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876. An attractive copy of what is "probably the masterpiece of Gustave Doré" (Adhémar). Three quarter burgundy leather. Gilt titles and decorations to the spine. In good, strong condition, but the leather is somewhat darkened. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. A touch of foxing to the initial pages. The rest of the work is in good condition but with sporadic foxing throughout. The first edition was published in London in 1872 under the title "London, a Pilgrimage." Illustrated with 174 woodcuts based on the drawings of Gustave Doré including 52 full-page compositions. 434 pages. 375 by 290mm (14¾ by 11½ inches).

The half title has an attractive gilt and green embossed design with the title 'les chefs d'oeuvre du roman contemporain.' 10 attractive engravings. The leather binding is a little rubbed, but still in sound condition. Some of the engravings are slightly foxed - but overall an attractive copy. Illustrations by Julien le Blant engraved by Toussaint. Le Blant was a pupil of E. Girard and started at the Salon in 1874. He was a Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1889. Reliure demi-cuir. Cuir couleur moutarde, avec six panneaux. Titres et appareils dorés au dos. Planches marbrées. Feuilles de garde marbrées. Le faux-titre a un joli dessin en relief doré et vert avec le titre « les chefs d'œuvre du roman contemporain ». 10 gravures attrayantes. La reliure en cuir est un peu frottée, mais toujours en bon état. Certaines gravures sont légèrement rousses - mais dans l'ensemble un bel exemplaire. Box has imitation ivory clasp. This comprises 15 erotic illustrations (one of which is double-page spread), by Pierre-Laurent Brenot. Total edition limited to 700 copies. This copy is #36, one of 181 on vélin de Papeteries de Lana, with the suite of 4 plates 'refusées' in colour and black, and a suite of all the illustrations in black. Complete. Story attributed to Vietnamese writer Pham Van Ky. All in very good, clean condition. 173 pages, + plates. 265 x 205 mm (10½ x 8 inches).
