London: George Bell and Sons, 1900. An interesting copy of this reprint edition. There are 31 steel plates (and 12 in page woodcuts) in the book. Of these the 30 steels that contain birds are all expertly hand-coloured. This was not part of the publication, so has presumably been done by an owner. This adds significantly to the attraction of the book. Contemporary green buckram boards with gilt titles. This is part of the Bohn's Libraries series, and has the Bohn's name and stamp to the spine in gilt. There is a little marking and bumping to the boards. The front end paper has been removed from this copy. The binding is a little loose, and slightly shaken, but still holding together well. There is some foxing / darkening throughout the book. xvi, 500, 32. pp. Advertising catalogue for Bohn's libraries to rear. 180 x 125 mm (7 x 5 inches).

London: Marcus Ward & Co, 1877. First Edition. Small calendar booklet with a delicately sewn binding. (The thread appears to be recent). Comprises four colour and gilt full-page illustrations, depicting the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Many of these calendars were attributed to the illustrator Kate Greenaway, but we are not sure these illustrations are hers. Nonetheless, they are beautiful! On verso of each is information for that coming year. Includes the moon's phases, legal holidays, church days, eclipses, and information about foreign and domestic postage rates. Bottom left of each illustration is the publisher's name: Marcus Ward & Co. Bottom right of each it reads: Ent. Sta. Hall - abbreviated version of Entered at Stationers' Hall. Booklet is in fine condition. 100 x 70 mm (4 x 2¾ inches).

Frontis portrait, and tissue. All other plates also have tissue and most are in a very good condition, with just the odd spot of foxing. Paris: 1880. A bit of a curiosity, this small book has no maker's details or date. It comprises a hardback cloth binding with a lithograph of two girls dancing in front of a mirror. The date is based on their clothing! This looks French and was purchased from a French Marche de puce. Inside are black and papers and 3 leaves (6 pages) of stiff chalk board - ready to be chalked upon. The edges of the book are rather rubbed and the binding has cracking and loss, but nevertheless a nice item. 90 by 60mm (3½ by 2¼ inches). Un peu curieux, ce petit livre n'a pas de détails sur le fabricant ni de date. Il comprend une reliure cartonnée en toile avec une lithographie de deux jeunes filles dansant devant un miroir. La date est basée sur leurs vêtements! Cela a l'air français et a été acheté dans un marché de puce français. À l'intérieur se trouvent du noir et des papiers et 3 feuilles (6 pages) de tableau noir rigide - prêtes à être tracées à la craie. Les bords du livre sont plutôt frottés et la reliure présente des craquelures et des manques, mais néanmoins un bel objet. 90 par 60 mm (3½ par 2¼ pouces).

Each plate protected with a facing tissue-guard. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's lovely silk-covered boards, sewn with threads in traditional Chinese style, upper board richly illustrated in gilt, and with gilt lettering. First edition. Includes list of dynasties; notes on the history and technique of Chinese drawing and painting; supplement of plates illustrating Chinese bronzes, ceramic art, and jade (separate title page). The silk covered boards are in very good to fine condition, a little discoloured (darkened) to the edges. Tiny split to the head of the spine. Internally In fine internal condition. Exceptionally well preserved, crisp plates. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms
Strehlneek owned an art gallery in Shanghai. In 1930, he was advertising this as the oldest establish firm dealing with art objects for the collector.

The book must be read one way for one story, then turned upside down and read the other way for the second story. Decorated red boards. Page edges and endpapers are red. Wonderful colour illustrations. 64 pages. 190 x 140 mm (7½ x 5½ inches). Illustrated by John R. Neill, Known for His Illustrations of L. Frank Baum's OZ Books. No dust jacket. The boards are a little rubbed, particularly to spine head and tail. Overall a very good example of the earliest edition. The illustrations were first serialised by the Philadelphia North American Syndicate in Sunday supplements as "Children's Stories That Never Grow Old," September 1, 1907 to March 22, 1908. Reilly & Britton then issued them as single volumes, and in a collection Children's Stories That Never Grow Old (1908). 34, 34 pages. 190 x 140 mm (7½ x 5½ inches).

Limited to only 30 copies, this is copy 7/30 signed to the colophon by Tachikawa. Handmade blue boards with leporello style publication inside. 16 leaves, printed on the recto only. The book is in as new condition. This is held in a soft card wrapper / slipcase with a reduced size image and title tipped onto the front cover. Slipcase is also in as new condition. 155 by 105mm (6 by 4¼ inches). First edition. Jean-Paul Soïme (1950-2007) was an author and musician from Martinique. Motoko Tachikawa (b1958) is a Japanese artist. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Galerie Akié Arichi have featured Tachikawa's work.

Mediolani: Ex Tipografia Joannis Pirottae, 1817. First edition of this large and important work on the structure of the urethra. Four large engraved plates by Filippo Bedetti, engraved by Carlo Della Rocca, to the rear of the book. Green softback covers with some marking to the cover. The paper on the spine has has considerable loss, but the binding is still holding well. Internally mainly clean, with a little marking, foxing and few small worm holes. Plates have light staining to the edges, but still mainly clean and tidy. A scarce item. xii, 60 pp. 460 x 330 mm (18 x 13 inches). In the beginning of the 19th century, when both vascular and cellular texture theories concerning the penis structure were still coexisting, three figures were involved in the controversy about the priority of the discovery of the vascular nature of human erectile tissues: Paolo Mascagni (1755-1815), represented by his pupil Tommaso Farnese (1780-1829), and Alessandro Moreschi (1771-1826). In the Elogio del celebre anatomico Paolo Mascagni (1816), Farnese attributed to his mentor the demonstration in 1809 of the continuity between arteries and veins and the description of venous plexuses, this term replacing the previous (and misleading) name of spongy body attributed to the inner part of penis. But in 1817 Moreschi inflamed the dispute, claiming for the priority of that discovery, with the publication of his anatomical work and a polemical essay against Farnese. Farnese promptly replied with Note addizionali del Dottore Tommaso Farnese al suo elogio di Paolo Mascagni (1818), where he reported a meeting with Moreschi in Bologna in 1810. On that occasion, Farnese explained a Mascagni's technique to perfuse urethral blood vessels that Moreschi would have plagiarized. Furthermore, Farnese also included eight testimonies claiming to have seen Mascagni performing such injections before 1810. The Prodromo della grande anatomia, a posthumous work of Mascagni edited in 1819, includes a plate dedicated to the structure of the urethra and a comprehensive view of this scientific story. In short, Mascagni developed a technique to inject urethral blood vessels, but Moreschi was the first to publish an accurate work on this subject. For this reason, many Italian and international authors have attributed to the latter the discovery of the venous circulation of the urethra.
