The hand coloured illustrations are all by Lothar Meggendorfer. As with other copies for sale online, the pages are finger marked, darkened and some have been professionally repaired. Berlin-Zehlendorf: Verlag Fritz Heyder, 1924. Orange soft covers with black titles. Attractive mottled finish. Very good condition without significant wear. Title page, 1 sheet of text and 8 sheets of woodcuts (including title woodcut). Nice copy. First edition of the important woodcut series by the Franconian artist Rudolf Schiestl. To the title page is an attractive armorial stamp in blue ink, from Rigi Kaltbad, a commune in Switzerland. The pages themselves are in excellent, clean and tidy condition. Printed signature to the first plate. There was also a special edition of 600 copies on larger paper using the woodblocks cut by Schiestl himself. 225 by 270mm (8¾ by 10¾ inches)

Paris: A la Tradition, 1947. A lovely edition of Descartes Discourse on Method. First thus. From an edition of only 400 (there were also 20 reserved copies for collaborators). This copy is printed on vélin d'Arches. 26 original copper engravings by CP Josso, including frontispiece, engraved title, 6 full page engravings, 12 vignettes and 6 end pieces (One for each of the six parts that the work is divided into). Pale green slipcase, with a matching pale green folder within. This has a paper label to the spine. (this is a little darkened). Inside this is a soft cover with title printed to the front. The text and illustration are in sheets (as published) in 16 un-stiched gathers. Half title, limitation (Justification du tirage). All in excellent condition, with just a touch of ghosting from some of the engravings. Probably the nicest copy you could find. Belle édition du Discours de la méthode de Descartes. D'abord donc. D'une édition de seulement 400 (il y avait également 20 exemplaires réservés pour les collaborateurs). Schiedam: Herman Jansen, 1943. An original 1940's advertising poster for Scheidam Jenever. Featuring a large Pinneke Proost, riding a bottle of Jansen Jenever. In excellent condition, without significant flaws. Framed in a sympathetic red metal frame under glass. In 1943, the company commissioned Marten Toonder to create "Het recept van Pinneke Proost." Pinneke Proost was the house gnome (Kabouter) of Jansen Gin. In the cartoon strip Toonder created, he saved the day by unmasking a fake gin, and showing that Jansen's was superior. Impressed by this, the company commissioned Hans G. Kresse (one of Toonder's team of workers) to create the advertising for them. This poster was the result. It was not used for long, and a smaller size was created from the 1950's. 46cm x 31cm visible area under passe partout and frame of 61cm by 43cm (The actual poster has part of the blank area hidden behind the passe partout and is approx 57cm x 36cm).

Bruxelles: Simon Stevin, 1952. First edition, limited to 210 numbered copies Complete. 55 pages of texts and 40 plates of full-page b/w engravings. In a grey coloured cloth covered presentation box. Cloth box is a little grubby. Internally in very good condition, with just small split starting to blank covering paper on plates section. Professor Louis Lebeer, was curator of printmaking at the universities of Ghent and Liège. 340 x 265 mm (13½ x 10½ inches). Edition originale, limitée à 210 exemplaires numérotés - il s'agit du n° 4. Complète. 55 pages de textes et 40 planches de gravures n/b à pleine page. Dans une boîte de présentation recouverte de tissu de couleur grise. La boîte en tissu est un peu sale. Intérieur en très bon état, avec juste une petite fente commençant à vider la section du papier de couverture sur les plaques. Le professeur Louis Lebeer, a été conservateur de la gravure aux universités de Gand et de Liège. 340 x 265mm

New York: McLoughlin Bro's Publisher's, 1874. An eight page hand-coloured woodcut children's ABC / alphabet picture book. The booklet's yellow covers read: The History of an Apple Pie to front, and has a McLoughlin Brothers advertisement to the back cover. Title page reads: Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie. No Date, but circa 1874. Three large decorated capitals per page; cuts for letters I, L, O, R, U and Z are signed Elton (i.e. Robert E. Elton - John McLoughlin's mentor and early business partner). The yellow covers are clean, but with a little darkening. There are a few minor closed tears (1-2mm) to the edges. Inside, it is clean and tidy throughout. The book has been re-sewn. 190 x 115 mm (7½ x 4½ inches).

. Un livre d'images pour enfants de huit pages, gravé sur bois et coloré à la main, intitulé ABC / alphabet. La couverture jaune du livret porte l'inscription suivante : "The History of an Apple Pie" (L'histoire d'une tarte aux pommes) : The History of an Apple Pie (L'histoire d'une tarte aux pommes) au recto, et une publicité de McLoughlin Brothers au verso. La page de titre se lit comme suit : Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie : Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie. Pas de date, mais vers 1874. Trois grandes capitales décorées par page ; les coupes pour les lettres I, L, O, R, U et Z sont signées Elton (c'est-à-dire le mentor de John McLoughlin et son premier partenaire commercial). Les couvertures jaunes sont propres, mais légèrement assombries. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées (1-2mm) sur les bords. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé. Le livre a été recousu. 190 x 115 mm

Port Sunlight: Lever Brothers Limited, c. 1910. Loose leaf, in full colour, that appears to have formerly been tipped into another publication. Illustration of a man in a bath holding a bar of Lifebuoy soap with a box of soaps on the floor and a portrait of the Lifebuoy fisherman on the wall. Text reads "LIFEBUOY SOAP. Specially prepared for HANDS & BATH. Gives you that Healthy Feeling". Verso has the advertising text for Lifebuoy. Very good condition and still bright coloured, as it was kept enclosed in a book or magazine for most of its time. Clean and without creases etc. 160 x 115 mm (6¼ x 4½ inches).

Lever Brothers and other firms often commissioned many (now important) artists to produce their advertising for them. Will Owen (1869 – 1957) was an English book illustrator, cartoonist, caricaturist and a commercial and poster artist, possibly best known for his iconic images of the Bisto Kids, Bovril, Lux and Lifebuoy.

Polydor Paris / Verve, 1982. A beautiful collection. Five vinyl LP records of Fitzgerald singing Gershwin songs. Each LP is held in a sleeve with an original lithograph cover by Bernard Buffet. The records are then held in a box with song details to the rear, and a repeat of the first lithograph. In practically as new condition. Fractional evidence of handling. The records all appear fresh and unscratched, but have not been tested / played by us. In 1959, this collection was produced by Verve of Paris. Buffet was commissioned to create original designs for the records, and music was sung by Ella Fitzgerald, with an orchestra conducted by Nelson Riddle. This copy is the second edition / Polydor Re-issue from 1982. The records and lithographs have been replicated from the original verve publication. (There was a text book that accompanied the original issue - this was not part of this Polydor re-issue). Complete and as issued. NB - although published / created in Paris - all song titles etc. are in the original English. See photographs on our website for song titles / listing. 320 by 320mm (12½ by 12½ inches).

. Une belle collection. Cinq disques 33 tours de Fitzgerald chantant des chansons de Gershwin. Chaque disque est présenté dans une pochette avec une couverture lithographique originale de Bernard Buffet. Les disques sont ensuite placés dans une boîte avec les détails de la chanson au dos, et une répétition de la première lithographie. Pratiquement à l'état neuf. Quelques traces de manipulation. Les disques semblent tous frais et non rayés, mais n'ont pas été testés / joués par nos soins. En 1959, cette collection a été produite par Verve of Paris. Buffet a été chargé de créer des dessins originaux pour les disques, et la musique a été chantée par Ella Fitzgerald, avec un orchestre dirigé par Nelson Riddle. Cet exemplaire est la deuxième édition / réédition Polydor de 1982. Les disques et les lithographies ont été reproduits à partir de la publication originale de Verve. (Un manuel accompagnait l'édition originale - il ne fait pas partie de cette réédition Polydor). Complet et tel qu'il a été publié. NB - bien que publié / créé à Paris - tous les titres de chansons etc. sont en anglais. 320 x 320 mm

Bristol: Joseph Lansdown & John Mills, 1808. A lovely example of an English Emblem book. Second Lansdown and Mills edition, following the first of 1806. Two works bound as one. Simple half blue leather with dark cloth boards and gilt titles to the spine. The binding is neat, and clean with a couple of marks only. Owner's name and date to the end paper of each title. Emblems moral and divine has a frontis portrait of Quarles, an engraved title, and 79 engraved emblems. Following this (and still part of the the first book) the Heiroglyphics contains 14 plates. Book two - The School of the Heart, has a frontis (the same portrait) engraved title, and 48 plates. Both books are complete. A total of 143 engraved plates + 2 engraved titles. The binding is slightly weak in parts (holding well, but with slight cracking). The first frontis is slightly separating, and the front end paper has been supported with archival tape. A few light marks to pages, and general darkening of the pages, but overall a very attractive example. Pagination: [x], 278., [iv], 154, [viii]. pp. The the end are the translations of the Latin mottos from the School of the Heart. 155 x 105 mm (6 x 4¼ inches). Francis Quarles (1592-1644) was an English poet. He is best known for the Emblems.

This is number # 196 of 250 - one of the 180 "Exemplaires contenant les eaux-fortes avec la lettre". There is no sign of a letter with this copy - but no other copies online seem to have letters. First edition Thus. Softback. Olive green integral paper covers. The binding is split and rubbed to the spine with some repair. One of the flaps is detached but present. A little nicking and edge wear to the wrapper. End papers are darkened, but the rest of the book is in very nice condition. One gather is loose, but holding by a thread! Embellished with gold illustrations to the head of each page. 19 full watercolour plates and 37 gold woodcuts plus 12 cul-de-lamps. 206, [1] leaf of advert. 300 x 220 mm (11¾ x 8¾ inches). Aquarelles et gravures sur bois de Paul Guignebault. De la « Collection Éclectique ». Il s'agit du numéro 196 sur 250 - l'un des 180 « Exemplaires contenant les eaux-fortes avec la lettre ». Couvertures intégrales en papier vert olive. La reliure est fendue et frottée au dos avec quelques réparations. L'un des rabats est détaché mais présent. Une petite entaille et une usure des bords sur l'emballage. Les pages de garde sont noircies, mais le reste du livre est en très bon état. Une fronce est lâche, mais tient par un fil ! Orné d'illustrations dorées en tête de chaque page. 19 planches pleines d'aquarelles et 37 gravures sur bois dorées plus 12 culs-de-lampe. 206, [1] feuillet d'annonce. 300 x 220 mm (11¾ x 8¾ pouces).
