John McLoughlin was a Scottish-born coach maker who became a prominent figure in the New York publishing industry during the 19th century. He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.

Der Früchtekorb. Ein Rätsel -und Malbüchlein

Green paper covers (slightly faded but sound) and twelve pages. These have each been hand coloured in water colour. We cannot find any other copies of this work, so are unsure if this is a black and white outline book for children to colour, or was sold coloured. We suspect the former, as the colouring is a little erratic. To some pages it is quite skillful, but other pages are a little clumsy. Either way, it is a charming children's work. 9.5cm x 12cm. .

The portfolio has a cloth spine and cream paper covered boards. This is in very good condition, with a little rubbing and marking only. Original ties are intact. Internally, the work is in beautiful condition, clean and tidy with no significant flaws. Alexandre Bida (1813–1895) was a French painter, draughtsman, watercolorist, and lithographer, renowned for his Orientalist art and book illustrations. Born in Toulouse and trained under Eugène Delacroix, Bida travelled extensively in the Middle East-including Syria, Greece, and Turkey. He is particularly known for his Biblical illustrations. 50cm x 38cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 279521.

The binding is a little rubbed with light staining. Cracking to the hinge, but still holding well. White end papers (almost wallpaper). First edition published by Cotta with illustrations by Kaulbach. This edition is considered one of the most popular of all Goethe illustrations. Kaulbach greatly enjoyed the ironic contrast between the serious hexameters and the content of the story with its scoundrel pranks, and was of the opinion that the illustrator should also invent a similar contrast. At the beginning and end of each chapter in the text there are woodcut vignettes with witty satires. Clean and tidy throughout, with just a little foxing / darkening to the pages. 257 pages. References: Brown, J. Buchanan. Early Victorian illustrated books,; pages 114-115.; Muir, Percy. Victorian illustrated books,; pages 230-231. 34cm x 28cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 2301256.

257 pages. Références : Brown, J. Buchanan. 40 x 28 cm. A heavy item - almost 5kg packed. Founded in Paris on November 19, 1879, by Auguste Dumont, Gil Blas was a daily newspaper known for its lively, literary, and sometimes risqué tone. The paper drew its name and inspiration from Alain-René Lesage's picaresque novel Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Gil Blas was also known for its illustrated weekly supplement, which contributed to its popularity and inspired similar publications abroad, such as the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus.

This is a little darkened and with some marks, but is still substantially sound and has done it's job of protecting the work within. Soft cream covers with illustrated titles to the front cover. Printed in black and red. Inside, there is an introductory booklet by Paul Fierens, which repeats the cover as a title. The justification has the number hand written to it. Then are the 26 pages, with letters A-Z, each illustrated with a woman hand coloured, and a verse beneath each. To the rear, in a fold, is the original illustration. In this case for the letter C, "Carabosse." This is signed in pencil by Ivanovsky. There is some rubbing to the paper surface to the right edge, where it looks as if this painting has been framed at some point. Not affecting image. Overall a beautiful example of a scarce work. We can find none of this work available to purchase at the time of cataloguing, and there are no auction records for the 26 with the original illustration. [64 pages printed to one side]. 25cm x 19cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 1400279321.
Elisabeth Ivanovsky (born Élisavieta Andréïevna Ivanovskaia) 1910, in Kichinev, then part of the Russian Empire (now Chișinău, Moldova). - 2006, Brussels, Belgium. Ivanovsky became a Belgian national and is renowned as a painter and illustrator, particularly in the field of children's literature. Her artistic style was shaped by constructivism and Russian avant-garde movements and her influence is seen in the continued popularity of direct colour illustration and the resurgence of minimalist approaches in contemporary children's books.

WorldCat / OCLC : 1400279321.
