Light to moderate foxing, particularly to the initial pages. Pencil annotations to the verso of the front end paper. 240 by 170mm (9½ by 6¾ inches).

This copy was owned by Mrs Van der Poorten Schwartz - the wife of Dutch author Maarten Maartens. Almost certainly given to her by William Robertson Nicoll, who wrote anecdotes of 19th Century Literary history with T.J. Wise, and edited 'The Expositor' for Hodder & Stoughton.

With title vignette and sixteen other steel vignettes. All gilt is bright and attractive. Spine is sun faded, and has some wear to the head and tail. Considers the life and work of French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). 54 pp. plus 80 b/w illustrations and 8 colour tipped-in plates (with protective tissue). Covers are rubbed, and there is one small water mark to the front board. Previous owner's name to FFEP is from Cavendish Morton (1911 - 2015), the maritime landscape painter.
