Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité or Madame de Genlis (25 January 1746 – 31 December 1830) was a French writer of the late 18th and early 19th century, best known for her novels and theories on children's education. her devotion to religion, morality, and feminine submission, strangely contrasts with her own life and her art. Paris: A la Tradition, 1947. A lovely edition of Descartes Discourse on Method. First thus. From an edition of only 400 (there were also 20 reserved copies for collaborators). This copy is printed on vélin d'Arches. 26 original copper engravings by CP Josso, including frontispiece, engraved title, 6 full page engravings, 12 vignettes and 6 end pieces (One for each of the six parts that the work is divided into). Pale green slipcase, with a matching pale green folder within. This has a paper label to the spine. (this is a little darkened). Inside this is a soft cover with title printed to the front. The text and illustration are in sheets (as published) in 16 un-stiched gathers. Half title, limitation (Justification du tirage). All in excellent condition, with just a touch of ghosting from some of the engravings. Probably the nicest copy you could find. Belle édition du Discours de la méthode de Descartes. D'abord donc. D'une édition de seulement 400 (il y avait également 20 exemplaires réservés pour les collaborateurs). Original paperback bound in (including covers). Slightly erotic stories and b/w illustrations. Text in French. 248 pages. 190 x 130 mm (7½ x 5 inches). Boards in a very good condition. Evidence of ex-libris having been removed from FFEP. Original book is a little grubby / foxed, and pages age toned, but still in a good condition.
Geo London was the pseudonym of Parisian journalist Georges Samuel. He was a (often unpopular) court reporter for many important trials, even once meeting Al Capone, and wrote many works before his death in 1951. Première édition. Geo London était le pseudonyme du journaliste parisien Georges Samuel. Il était un sténographe judiciaire (souvent impopulaire) pour de nombreux procès importants, rencontrant même une fois Al Capone, et a écrit de nombreux ouvrages avant sa mort en 1951.

Frankfurt: A.M. Mallet, 1719. A pair of copper engravings of the heavens. The first shows three globes floating in the sky, an active seaside scene across the bottom including boats, an old coastal village scene, etc. The globes show the Anteciens, the Perieciens and the Antipodes. These are too small to have been of use to a navigator, and were purely decorative. This is numbered plate 49 to the corner. The second, labelled plate 71 shows a pastoral scene, above which there is a disc showing the sun and the astrological symbols. These were issued by A.M. Mallet in 1719, although these would appear to be slightly earlier impressions (without German text overlaid). Both of the engraved plates are held under a mounting boards, with gilt edged window. The mounts have very slight bumped, but are in good, clean condition. The plates are good impressions, and cleanly mounted. Plate 71 has a slight crease to the right edge, with a "crack" of loss of ink. This would seem to have occurred at the time of printing. Overall in very nice condition. Size of the engraving is 150 x 105 mm (6 x 4¼ inches). The size of the mount is 280 x 225 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

[London]: [Sir Allen Lane and Richard Lane at the Chiswick Press], 1952. First edition with these illustrations. Original grey wrappers. One of 1600 copies. This is a presentation copy. Signed in dedication by the illustrator, Ronald Searle. It is inscribed on the FFEP with a message from Ronald Searle and his wife Kaye to his friend Leonard Russell and his wife, dated Christmas 1952. Leonard Russell was an English journalist and satirist, well known as editor of the annual miscellany known as 'The Saturday Book'. No printer identified, but assume same as other copies available. [3] 44 [2] pages. 295 x 220 mm (11½ x 8¾ inches). Wrappers are a little age toned / grubby. There has been damage to the book from dampness, which has particularly affected the inside back cover, and the last two pages. Overall a good early presentation copy.

Paris: Garnier Frères, 1867. Original red leather bindings, with decorations to front and gilt stamped title to spines. A beautiful hand-coloured lithographed frontispiece to each volume, and 50 hand-coloured lithographed plates and 2 uncoloured lithographic plates; also many b/w text illustrations. All edges gilt. Volume 1: 339 pages; Volume 2: 324 pages. Text in French. Boards are a little rubbed at the corners, and there are some faded ink blobs to both volumes. Internally, there is sporadic spotting, but none affecting the beauty of the plates. Overall, in a very good clean condition. The first gather to volume two is slightly protruding where it has started to split from the text block - but it is still holding firmly. 275 x 185 mm (10¾ x 7¼ inches). Monte Carlo: Aux Éditions du Livre, 1952. One of 5000 copies on numbered Vellum Crève-Coeur. In original board cover and slipcase. Softback in glassine. Created in 1928, this tale of morality was Marcel Pagnol's first theatrical success. Full of colour illustrations by Albert Dubout. Text in French. Slipcase has some rubbing / fading to outer slipcase. Inside cover and book are in an excellent condition. 220 x 160 mm (8¾ x 6¼ inches). Un des 5000 exemplaires sur Vélin Crève-Cœur numérotés. Dans sa housse et son étui d'origine. Couverture souple en cristal. Créé en 1928, ce conte de moralité est le premier succès théâtral de Marcel Pagnol. Plein d'illustrations en couleurs par Albert Dubout. Texte en français. L'étui a quelques frottements / décoloration sur l'étui extérieur. London: The Cresset Press, 1931. Two volumes. Folio. One of 195 copies on Batchelor's handmade paper. (This copy #105). Set in type from a copy of the Revised 1674 edition (Paradise Lost) and the first edition of 1671 (Paradise Regained). Twenty wood-engravings (16 full-page, plus head- and tail-pieces in each volume) were designed and engraved on wood by Demitrios Galanis. Title page and Initial letters designed by Anna Simmons. The copies were printed Bernard Newdigate at Shakespeare Head Press, in Oxford. Volume I, (i)-xii, (1)-442, colophon; Volume II, (i-vi), (1)-88, colophon. 370 x 260 mm (14¾ x 10½ inches). Sold with this item, is a prospectus for this work, dated 1930, by Cresset Press, New York. This is printed in red and black 720 mm x 500 mm. Folded. Contains two engravings (one full page) and a leaf of the text. To the rear, is an apology to the Golden Cockerel Press for publishing a Milton at the same time that they are.

N/A, 1875. A collection of 90 full page lithographs from Vanity Fair, illustrations by SPY (Sir Leslie Ward) and APE (Carlo Pellegrini) as well as a large number that are anonymous. Lithographed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son. Facing most of the lithographs, is the biography, mostly written by Gibson as Jehu Junior, written in a neat manuscript hand. (There is a tipped in plate bearing the owner / compiler's name and signature to the inside front board, but we have been unable to identify them). Four of the biographies have the subject's autograph tipped in to the page. These are Sir Francis Grant (Scottish portrait painter and President of the Royal Academy). He was a keen hunter, and this also has a large sketch of a huntsman by Grant tipped in. Richard Boyle (9th Earl of Cork and Orrery). Frederic Leighton (Painter, draughtsman and sculptor. He also had the distinction of the shortest peerage in history. He died the day after being made a Lord). Reverend Arthur Stanley (Dean of Westminster). Unpaginated, but approximately 180 pages. with 90 lithographs pasted in and approximately 85 biographies. The scrapbooks have black boards and black leather spines. The spines are significantly rubbed, and have some splitting. There are gilt titles to the front boards. Inside, the volumes are both in good condition, with a touch of marking, but overall very clean condition. 380 by 270mm (15 by 10¾ inches).
