Tokyo: Watanabe Shozaburo, C1925. First edition. An attractive woodblock print in the ukiyo-e tradition. Unusually, this was a chirimen-e, a crepe-paper print, rather than a print on standard flat hosho paper. Takahashi worked for Watanabe Shozaburo for many years, producing hundreds of woodblock prints for them. This print seems to have been produced from 1923 until about 1932. Takahashi's work tended to capture the essence of everyday Japanese life rather than focusing on noted landmarks. This print is recorded in the Shimizu Hiroaki catalogue (2005), number 249, page 55 (Boston Museum of Fine Arts). The double-gourd seal form used on this work is specifically associated with his "Hiroaki" signature rather than his "Shōtei" signature. In particular, the croissant shape to the base identifies it as Seal "1" in Shotei dot com's Hiroaki seal collection.
The print is 21cm x 15cm. Smaller than the normal print, as the process of making the crepe effect shrinks the paper by about a third. There is some edge wear to the left edge, with minimal loss of print (mainly to the white border) and the other edges are slightly ragged. Otherwise a lovely example.

. Takahashi Hiroaki (Shôtei) 高橋松亭 弘明 Première édition. Une jolie estampe sur bois dans la tradition de l'ukiyo-e. Fait inhabituel, il s'agit ici d'un « chirimen-e », c'est-à-dire d'une estampe sur papier crêpé, et non d'une estampe sur papier hosho plat standard. Takahashi a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années pour Watanabe Shozaburo, pour qui il a réalisé des centaines d'estampes sur bois. Cette estampe semble avoir été produite entre 1923 et environ 1932. L'œuvre de Takahashi avait tendance à capturer l'essence de la vie quotidienne japonaise plutôt que de se concentrer sur des monuments célèbres. Cette estampe est répertoriée dans le catalogue de Shimizu Hiroaki (2005), numéro 249, page 55 (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Boston). La forme du sceau à double calebasse utilisée sur cette œuvre est spécifiquement associée à sa signature « Hiroaki » plutôt qu'à sa signature « Shōtei ». En particulier, la forme en croissant à la base permet de l'identifier comme le sceau « 1 » de la collection de sceaux Hiroaki de Shotei dot com.
L'estampe mesure 21 cm x 15 cm. Elle est plus petite qu'une estampe standard, car le procédé permettant d'obtenir l'effet crêpé rétrécit le papier d'environ un tiers. Le bord gauche présente une légère usure, avec une perte minime de l'estampe (principalement au niveau de la bordure blanche), et les autres bords sont légèrement irréguliers. Sinon, c'est un très bel exemplaire.

Shanghai: Huahe, 1932. First edition. This appears to be a deluxe edition for the home market as captions are written in both Japanese and English. The binding is in snakeskin, (probably faux snakeskin), with purple ribbon binding intact. Japanese titles to the outside and image of soldiers helmet and straw hat. 2 red & black maps, (one of Cha-Pei & one entitled "map of Sino-Japanese distuarbances (sic), Shanghai") + 48 pp. of black and white photographs depicting the Japanese invasion of Shanghai. Captions are in Japanese and English. Overall in excellent condition. There is a tiny loss to the top and bottom edge of the spine. Very small split to the binding edge. A couple of marks to the cover - but overall in excellent condition.
