Paris: Chez Duchesne, 1765. First edition. A very nice copy of the original edition of the patriotic tragedy Le Siege de Calais by Dormont de Belloy, which was a huge success in 1765. Beautiful contemporary binding in marbled and glazed calfskin, smooth spine decorated with a piece of red morocco and rich gilded decoration. Very decorative binding, in good condition. The top hinge is partially split, corners a little worn, and a slight rubbing to the spine. Fresh interior, some foxed leaves. Small owner's stamp to the bottom of the title page. Overall, a very nice copy. The dramatic subject was the Siege of Calais (1346-1347) by Edward III of England, who claimed the crown of France during the Hundred Years War. It was taken from Froissart and Mézerai. This text is bound in with another text published the same year in Calais, on the same subject: History of Eustache de Saint-Pierre. At the siege of the city of Calais, under the reign of Philippe de Valois, King of France, in 1346 and 1347. Followed by the Letter from the Magistrates of Calais to Mr. De Belloy, on his Tragedy, and that of Mr. de Voltaire to the same Author. The play clearly had considerable impact in the 1760s. 200 x 125mm (7.75 by 5 inches). Xvi, 1-120,. viii, 1-72 pp.

Xvi, 1-120,. viii, 1-72 pp.

London: Frederick Warne and Co, 1897. First Thus. A very nice example of a Vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath (and signed to the rear inside board). Full dark blue leather, with a lovely Art Nouveau wreath design. This has a small Mother of Pearl inlay to the top and is gilt decoration around. The design if clean and well defined. There is a small rubbing / discolouration to the corners of the boards. The spine has a simple gilt decoration. The blue of the spine is significantly faded to a brown. All edges gilt. Still a very nice example of Chiver's work. The book within is the "Albion Edition" of Milton's poetical works, with a frontis of the poet. 608 pages. A good clean example of Milton's poems. Chivers developed the technique of "Vellucent binding." First a design was painted on paper and covered with a thin, treated and thus translucent layer of vellum. Chivers patented his method in 1898, so our example was produced around this time. This example shows two of Chiver's additional embellishments, with a small piece of Mother of Pearl and gilt detailing. 200 by 140mm (7¾ by 5½ inches).

. Premier exemplaire. 200 x 140 mm
