Fractional rubbing to the spine edge. Paper stock is very cheap and so significantly darkened throughout. Neat owner's name and date to front free end paper. Nevertheless a decent copy of this scarce UK First. "The most original cracksman since Raffles" says the dust jacket. The word cracksman was used to describe a burglar or thief. 313 pages. 180 x 115 mm (7 x 4½ inches).

Authors and poets included range from Ernest Hemingway to Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams to Gertrude Stein, and many more. This would be the first appearance of Henry Miller in a book. The dust jacket is fragile and has some tears and small losses to the edges, and spine of dust jacket has a split, but now protected by a clear wrap. The book is very clean and tidy both inside and out with no markings. Prelims are age toned, but clean. Overall a good copy. xi, 475 pp. 235 x 165 mm (9¼ x 6½ inches).

    The Percy Society was a short lived British text publication society. It was founded in 1840 and collapsed in 1852. The Society was a scholarly collective, aimed at publishing limited-edition books of rare poems and songs. The president was Lady Braybrooke, and the twelve founding members of the committee included John Payne Collier, Thomas Crofton Croker, Thomas Wright, James Orchard Halliwell (treasurer), Charles Mackay, Edward Francis Rimbault (secretary) and William Chappell. Later members included William Sandys, and Robert Bell.

The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge…

    London: Printed by T. Bensley, for E. and S. Harding, 1797. Hardback, covered in marbled paper covers with leather label to the spine. The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions.
    The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening', 'the Glow-Worm', 'Love' and 'Youth'. vii, [1], 112 pp. 175 x 100 mm (7 x 4 inches).
