Amsterdam: Janssonius, Johannes, 1657. This double page, hand coloured engraving is taken from Galliae et Helvetiae, which was volume 5 of THEATRUM PRAECIPUARUM URBIUM. Published in 1657. These magnificent city and town views are based in part on his purchase of the printing plates of Georg Braun and Abraham Hogenberg's celebrated Civitates orbis terrarum, but were much expanded by Janssonius. Poitiers is the largest view, measuring 46cm x 14cm (ie. the full width of the printed area, and half of the height). Above this are Montpellier and Tours (Each approximately 22cm x 15cm. Montpellier and Tours have numbered keys to them. Poitiers has the names of features on the map, and a summary of the features to it. Very good, contemporary hand colouring. The sheet is clean and neat, with a strong fold to the centre (as is normal) no foxing or damage to the plate. The text to the verso of the sheet are just visible in the margins if you look carefully. The exposed area of plate is 50cm x 34cm. Held under a gilt edged silk passepartout, and in a more recent gilt and black frame under glass. The frame is attractive and sympathetically displays the view. There are a couple of small chips and areas of rubbing to the frame. To the rear is a backing card, hanging steel, and old label from a New York at gallery with details of the plate. Sold with frame. If preferred, we can dispose of the frame and ship only the city view.

Jan Jansson (1588-1664), was a contemporary and rival of the Dutch mapmaker Willem Janszoon Blaeu. He settled in Amsterdam as a bookseller and printer in 1612. He produced this reissue of Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum in 1657. After his death, the company was continued by his heirs under the direction of Johannes van Waesbergen. In 1676 his heirs disposed of all the remaining sheets and stock by auction. The copperplates from Janssonius's atlases were afterwards sold to Schenk and Valck.

L'ouvrage est conservé sous un passepartout en soie bordé de dorures et dans un cadre plus récent, doré et noir, sous verre. Le cadre est attrayant et présente la vue de manière sympathique. Il y a quelques petits éclats et des zones de frottement sur le cadre. Au dos se trouve une carte de soutien, un acier de suspension et une ancienne étiquette d'une galerie new-yorkaise avec des détails sur la plaque. Vendu avec le cadre. Si vous le souhaitez, nous pouvons nous débarrasser du cadre et n'expédier que la vue de la ville. London: 1722. A very nice copy, with contemporary hand colouring, under passe partout. This is probably from the second (1722) edition of Camden's Britannia. 43cm x 39cm. Good, clean copy, with minimal darkening. Centre fold has been reinforced to the rear. Nice bright colouring. Tipped onto passe partout with archival tape. Frame is 49cm x 39cm. Very good condition. Shows Britain as named under Roman occupation.

Le cadre mesure 49 cm x 39 cm. Très bon état. Montre la Grande-Bretagne telle qu'elle est nommée sous l'occupation romaine.

Contemporary hand colouring. 275 x 365 mm. From DAPPER (1663), VON ZESEN (1664) or COMMELIN (1693). See Hameleers 62; D'Ailly 129. The map is somewhat darkened, and has creasing to the middle. A couple of pinholes to the crease. Overall an attractive item. Under a passepartout. (This a little marked and dirty). 435 x 520 mm.

Amsterdam: na, 1650. An attractive bird's eye view of the Hendrick de Keyser Beurs (stock exchange) of Amsterdam. Although clearly based upon the engraving by Claes Visscher, this print differs in quite a few details, and would seem to be a slightly later version. (Visscher's original engraving was 1612). Two sheets glued together, so obviously from a book. Now tipped onto hand made backing card with painted borders. The print is in very good, fractionally darkened state with a small crease to one corner. The board also has a few bumps. Engraved area 19cm x 29cm, Original sheet 27.5cm x 34.5cm, backing card is 37.5cm x 45cm.

Paris: Direction et Administration, 1897. A lovely copy of this atlas with hand coloured maps throughout. Red buckram binding, with titles and decoration embossed to the front board. Matching red leather spine, with gilt titles and decorations. Binding in very good, fresh condition. A little rubbing and scratching to the leather, and slight bumping to the boards only. Slight creasing to the end paper and title page. The rest of the atlas is in excellent, clean condition. The map of the Railways of France has a little creasing and small closed tear (now repaired with archival tape). 108 colour maps of French departments and colonies (including the planisphere of the French colonies). Two maps of Paris, and a double page environs of Paris. Each of the departments has one or two pages of text outlining the features of the department, and a map of it. Complete with two large in-fine folding maps of the railways of France and Europe, and the railway map of France. Léger froissement au papier de fin et à la page de titre. Le reste de l'atlas est en excellent état. La carte des chemins de fer de France présente un léger froissement et une petite déchirure fermée (réparée avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage). 108 cartes en couleurs des départements français et des colonies (y compris le planisphère des colonies françaises). Deux cartes de Paris, et une double page des environs de Paris. Chaque département est accompagné d'une ou deux pages de texte décrivant les caractéristiques du département et d'une carte de celui-ci. Complet de deux grandes cartes dépliantes in-fine des chemins de fer de France et d'Europe, et de la carte des chemins de fer de France. Indre-Loire: Service Hydraulique, 1853. A folding manuscript map / cadastral plan of the commune of Ports and the surrounding area. 8 pages folded and pasted together, drawn to one side only. The first pate is the text / permissions and authorisations signed and dated (with official stamp) by individuals involved with the project. ( 4 different individuals have written comments and signed the plan). This seems to have been drawn up to accompany a cleaning / repair project for the roads and bridges of the area. Attractive hand coloured plan of the area, with extra section added on paper (see photos) showing the whole of the commune of Ports, including sections of the river Vienne. The plan is drawn on tracing paper / glassine, pasted to stiff card. This is a little darkened, but without significant flaws. Nice detailing and quality of work. Despite the title, there are no bridges in this commune. 290 by 1820mm (11½ by 71¾ inches).

La première page est le texte / permissions et autorisations signées et datées (avec cachet officiel) par les personnes impliquées dans le projet. (4 personnes différentes ont écrit des commentaires et signé le plan). Ce plan semble avoir été établi pour accompagner un projet de nettoyage / réparation des routes et des ponts de la région. Joli plan de la région, colorié à la main, avec une section supplémentaire ajoutée sur papier (voir photos) montrant l'ensemble de la commune de Ports, y compris des sections de la rivière Vienne. Le plan est dessiné sur du papier calque / glassine, collé sur une carte rigide. Ce dernier est un peu assombri, mais sans défauts significatifs. Les détails et la qualité du travail sont agréables. Malgré le titre, il n'y a pas de pont dans cette commune. 290 par 1820mm

Paris: Imprimerie de Selves fils, 1834. A fascinating collection of papers. A geographic atlas, used as it should be, with a number of student manuscript documents bound in. Contents comprise: The atlas Géographique, complete with the 16 double page hand coloured maps (as called for). These are all in good, clean and bright condition. There are a few ink annotations to the blank reverse of the maps - but the maps themselves are lovely. These are all of the ancient world, and state that they were produced by Libraire Hachette in 1833 or 1834. In addition to these maps, bound into the front of the atlas (between the title and the first map) are several large folding manuscript charts. Several of these have been signed Belize Romain - as this name is also doodled several times to the inside of the boards, we assume this is the student who made them. The manuscript charts are: (1) "Mesures de solidite" comparing ancient and modern measures. To the front facing leaf of this is a further manuscript text, with measurements and text; (2) "Tableau des mesures decimales" (3) "Mesures de superificie" (surface area). (4) "mesures de longueuer" (5) "mesures de contenouce." The front and rear inside boards show the evidence of a bored student, with doodles and scribbles. The outside boards are cheaply bound in stained paper, with a darkened paper label to the front board. The boards are scruffy and show signs of use. Overall a lovely students manuscript collection from the 1830's. [i], [V], 16 pp. 200 x 135 mm (7¾ x 5¼ inches).

Il y a quelques annotations à l'encre au verso des cartes, mais les cartes elles-mêmes sont magnifiques. Elles représentent toutes le monde antique et indiquent qu'elles ont été produites par Libraire Hachette en 1833 ou 1834. En plus de ces cartes, plusieurs grandes cartes manuscrites dépliantes sont reliées au début de l'atlas (entre le titre et la première carte). Plusieurs d'entre elles sont signées Belize Romain - comme ce nom est également griffonné plusieurs fois à l'intérieur des planches, nous supposons qu'il s'agit de l'étudiant qui les a réalisées. Paris: Chez Binet. A nice copy of this atlas. A new edition - dated 1835 to the title. Only two years after the first edition, this has been corrected and augumented! In addition to the 96 maps of each department (as shown on the first leaf) the atlas also has tipped in, The Environs de Paris; A folding Carte de la province d'Alger (dated 1857); The origin of France; 11 maps showing the continents and European neighbours of France and a large folding Tableau Geographic hand coloured in outline. In total, here are offered 110 engraved maps and one folding chart. Original sea green boards with home made calligraphic label to the front board. The boards are rather bumped to the edges and spine, and the label quite darkened. Chips to the surface paper of the spine, although the binding is firm. Engraved title page (no end paper), with a little marking and a crease to it. The maps themselves are clean and tidy, with just a touch of darkening / the odd foxing spot. Each of the department maps is beautifully engraved, with statistics and one or two vignettes of principal scenes in the department. 250 x 340 mm (9¾ x 13½ inches).

Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion. 1754-1755. Four Parts in two volumes: With two different engraved frontispieces by J.C. Philips, six folding engraved maps by Isaak Tirion. (Including "Nieuwe Kaart van de Eilanden van Groot Brittannien behelzende De Koningryken Engeland, Schotland en Ierland [..]", ca. 32,5 x 37,5 cm.; "Nieuwe Kaart van Ierland", ca. 34 x 27,5 cm. & "NIEUWE KAART VAN DE GROOTBRITTANNISCHE VOLKPLANTINGEN IN NOORD AMERICA [..]", ca. 36,5 x 45,5 cm.), 1 fold. engraved map of London & surroundings ("Kaart van Londen [..]", ca. 28 x 41,5 cm.). The are also 6 folding engraved views (of London) by J.C. Philips et al. including 1 which depicts 2 views of London. There is also an engraved portrait of King George II by J. Houbraken after A. Schouman. 8vo (ca. 20 x 12 cm.), 18th century uniform gilt calf, gilt ribbed spine with 2 contrasting labels with titles, marbled edges. A profusion of gilt to the spines! Both vols possibly lack a divisional title (of the second part), but texts are complete. A few minor imperfections (foot of spine of vol. I slightly damaged / chipped, bindings slightly rubbed/ worn along extremities, 1 fold. map. slightly torn in outer blank margin, a little foxed/ browned), but nevertheless an attractively bound set in good condition. Complete set of an 18th-cent. topographical description of Great Britain including a description of the former British colonies in NORTH AMERICA (pp. 658-684, titled "Tegenwoordige Staat Van De Groot Brittannische Bezittingen In Noord-Amerika, En in andere Weerelsdeelen"). –

1865. Twelve manuscript maps with dated inscription: "A.M. Tatham from her afft. Bro Sherman Dec. 1865". Rebound from a broken binding as a folding leporello series of maps in cloth covered boards "Bible Atlas S.R.T." on original label to the front. Binding is new and without flaws. Slight scratch to blank (back) of first map, otherwise the maps are in excellent condition.

The maps comprise: The Nations of the Ancient World, Assyria and the Adjacent Lands, Canaan in Patriarchal Ages, Canaan as Divided among The Tribes, Dominions of David and Solomon, Armenia, Egypt and Sinai Peninsula Illustrating the Journey of the Israelites to the Promised Land, Jerusalem and its Environs, The Kingdoms of Judah & Israel, Palestine in the time of Our Saviour, Modern Palestine, and The Eastern Mediterranean Illustrating the Travels of St. Paul. Each map folds out to approx. 165 x 133 mm. The maps still retain their original bright colouring.

Sherman Ralph Tatham was born in Hampstead in 1850. Educated at Winchester College 1862 - 1868, he became an architect. Tatham died in Hampstead in 1923 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery. The dedication here is to his younger sister Anna Maria Tatham.

Sherman Ralph Tatham est né à Hampstead en 1850. Il a étudié au Winchester College de 1862 à 1868 et est devenu architecte. Tatham est décédé à Hampstead en 1923 et est enterré au cimetière de Highgate. La dédicace ici est destinée à sa jeune sœur Anna Maria Tatham.

Paris: 1770. Copper engraving, beautifully hand coloured. Originally designed to be viewed through a zograscope. Title in French. Shows Geldersekade and the Schreierstoren with its bridge. After Jan de Beijer. In very good condition, under neat card mount. Visible area within card mount: 315 x 415 mm (12½ x 16¼ inches).
A zograscope is an optical device for magnifying flat images, as the shape of the lens enhanced the sense of the depth shown in the picture. The precursor to 3D images!
