    Paris de Nuit

Paris: Arts et Métiers Graphique, 1987. Re-issue of the 1933 original photo book. In original unclipped dust jacket. Published for the first time in 1933 and originally designed by Brassaï himself, this is a high-quality reproduction of his legendary first book of photographs. The city of Paris bewitched Brassaï. Working as a journalist by day, by night he roamed the streets of the capital and visited its bistros, sharing moments in the lives of the prostitutes and peddlers, down-and-outs, and illicit lovers who lived on the margins of society. Their nocturnal surroundings fascinated the artist, whose photographs are as much an exploration of the technical challenge of portraying darkness as portraits of a hauntingly dramatic night world. [26] pages, 62 full pages of b/w photography, with explanations in French to the front. Very Clean and fresh looking, appears almost unread. 325 x 280 mm (12¾ x 11 inches). 325 x 280 mm.

Photograph, Paris, May 1968: Hitler hides behind mask of Charles de Gaulle.

Paris: NP, 1968. A large (40 cm x 29.5cm) black and white silver print / silver gelatin photograph of a Paris wall in May 1968. The photograph shows a poster of Hitler hiding behind a mask of Charles de Gaulle. He is wearing the Cross of Lorraine as his armband. (The Free French forces in world war 2, under de Gaulle, had used this symbol). This is pinned over a background which states "CRS SS" multiple times. The CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) was the National Reserve Force to deal with strikes and demonstrations. In fact this slogan dates back to 1948 when the CRS was first formed. The wall also shows a hand written sign for a manifestation in the evening of the 19th at St Lazare. Public demonstrations were often (and are still often) held in the space in front of the St Lazare station. This is almost certainly a large print of a reportage / press photograph of the time. In red ink to the reverse is written "68." The central poster was used in the 1968 student riots, and although we have been unable to trace this photograph, there is an "internet ghost" of it, which states it was taken in May 1968. Condition is excellent, with no significant marks or dirt to it.

140 x 85 mm (5½ x 3¼ pouces).

Green hardback buckram photograph album, with a simple leather and gilt label to the spine stating "London 1968." Inside is a wonderful unpublished collection of 78 photographs in immaculate condition. From Street urchins to shop mannequins. From bearded buskers to Old ladies feeding pigeons. The pictures capture the wealth and modernity of the West End, but also the deprivation of the East End. The classical architecture of churches, and the vitality of the Portobello market. There is a nod to the newer arrivals in London, with some Greek children and Indian nuns. St Paul's is under scaffolding, The Charge of the Light Brigade is at the Odeon, Fantasia at Studio Two, and it is Guinness Time in Piccadilly Square. With shop windows in the West and broken windows in the East. All in all, this is probably the best photo album we have had. The photographs are beautifully laid out on the stiff card pages, with good margins. Simple and elegant. Album size is 33.5cm x 26cm. First edition.

It is perhaps symptomatic of the fashion industry that although the hair stylist and make up artist are both credited, the model herself is not names. Laroche (1921-1989) was one of the first designers to introduce separates (ie. jacket and trousers). His company continues today.

These are a little darkened and with slight splitting to the spine, but still attractive. The text pages, in French and german, are somewhat darkened to the edges. Introduction by Jean Cocteau. After the introductory pages are 62 full page photographs on glossy photographic paper. These in excellent condition. All in all, a decent copy. . Introduction de Jean Cocteau. 325 x 245 mm
