Macon: La Grappe, 1948. A lovely copy of this scarce limited edition. (limited to 110 numbered copies). A lovely edition of poetry in itself, particularly highlighted by the 18 real photographs, taken in Marcel Guy's studio from his own pictures, pasted opposite the text (various views of Mâcon in 1948). These magnificent photographs perfectly illustrate M. Carron's delicate poems. There are also two illustrations: one by Henri Blouzard and one by Paul-Louis Bolot. Pale blue paper covers. Very clean and tidy. Protected with old glassine. Inside the work is clean and tidy throughout. 67 [13] pages. 330 by 250mm (13 by 9¾ inches).

Single page introduction (In French) by Yves Bigot). There is an advertising leaflet from FNAC loosely inserted to the rear of the book. 220 by 220mm (8¾ by 8¾ inches).

Although anonymous, we are convinced that it is by a professional photographer, as the quality of images, the selection and framing of subjects and the variety of print sizes all speak to a professional eye. Green hardback buckram photograph album, with a simple leather and gilt label to the spine stating "London 1968." Inside is a wonderful unpublished collection of 78 photographs in immaculate condition. From Street urchins to shop mannequins. From bearded buskers to Old ladies feeding pigeons. The pictures capture the wealth and modernity of the West End, but also the deprivation of the East End. The classical architecture of churches, and the vitality of the Portobello market. There is a nod to the newer arrivals in London, with some Greek children and Indian nuns. St Paul's is under scaffolding, The Charge of the Light Brigade is at the Odeon, Fantasia at Studio Two, and it is Guinness Time in Piccadilly Square. With shop windows in the West and broken windows in the East. All in all, this is probably the best photo album we have had. The photographs are beautifully laid out on the stiff card pages, with good margins. Simple and elegant. Album size is 33.5cm x 26cm. First edition.

france: NA, 1865. 21 albumen photographs on twenty sheets. 6 are hand tinted / coloured photographs of members of the Ouled Nail tribe, found mainly in Bou Saâda in Algeria. 2 appear to be commercial photographs, the other 19 are private photographs. These are attributed to Auguste Maure. He founded a photography studio in Biskra in 1860. Biskra features in several of the photographs here. He is also particularly known for photographing the Ouled Nails tribe. Hand written title. In a contemporary silk and velvet covered folder. It appears that the photographs (which are all laid onto stiff card backing) were originally bound into the folder - but they are now completely loose. Album dimensions: 165 by 100mm (6½ by 4 inches).

London Stereoscope and Photographic Company Ltd, 1889. An attractive collection of 25 published albumen photographs of London, photographed and published by the London Stereoscope company. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the front board. There is some bumping and water staining to the front board particularly. The title page and some page edges are a little foxed, but the images themselves are in very good condition. The pages are each bound in, album style. This is weak in parts, and has been reinforced, but overall is sound. images are 13.5 x 21 cm each. The usual London landmarks are all represented, on streets which seem very empty to the modern eye, and populated by pedestrians, horses and carriages. Album is 300 by 220mm (11¾ by 8¾ inches).

Paris: Jean Paul Caboche, 1991. A lovely black and white photograph of a fashion shoot for Guy Laroche Haute-Couture. Original photograph held under passe partout. Model (anonymous) in a gabardine jacket and felt hat. To the verso, the credits show that this is from the Guy Laroche Autumn / Winter collection. Photograph in as new condition, held under stiff passe partout with thin card backing board. Photograph is in practically as new condition. Passe partout is clean and neat, with a touch of edge tape only. Photograph dimensions 29.5cm x 21cm. Passe partout is 45cm x 36cm. It is perhaps symptomatic of the fashion industry that although the hair stylist and make up artist are both credited, the model herself is not names. Laroche (1921-1989) was one of the first designers to introduce separates (ie. jacket and trousers). His company continues today.

Le passe-partout est propre et net, avec seulement un peu de ruban adhésif sur les bords. Les dimensions de la photographie sont de 29,5 cm x 21 cm. Le passe-partout mesure 45 cm x 36 cm. Il est peut-être symptomatique de l'industrie de la mode que, bien que le coiffeur et le maquilleur soient tous deux mentionnés, le mannequin lui-même n'est pas nommé. Laroche (1921-1989) a été l'un des premiers créateurs à introduire des vêtements séparés (c'est-à-dire une veste et un pantalon). Sa société existe encore aujourd'hui.

Most are flip-flops or parts of them in various stages of degradation. Edited and designed by Hideaki Matsuura. The book is in a fine condition. 210 x 150 mm (8¼ x 6 inches).

There is a loosely inserted French translation for each photo caption. This book was the result of the purchase of the newspaper archives of the city of Luton, England. A vast source of material, from which Timothy Prus selected a series of images to create a surrealist story line. Prus had been interested in amateur photography / found images long before this became accepted in most of contemporary art. The book is in a near fine condition, and appears almost unread. 112 pages. 185 x 130 mm (7¼ x 5 inches).

These are a little darkened and with slight splitting to the spine, but still attractive. The text pages, in French and german, are somewhat darkened to the edges. There is a Picasso title page which is either stuck neatly to the edge of he colophon page or is in a French fold. We are unsure which, but there is not text within the pages. Introduction by Jean Cocteau. After the introductory pages are 62 full page photographs on glossy photographic paper. These in excellent condition. All in all, a decent copy. This edition published for the members of the Deutscher Bucherbund. First edition thus. 325 x 245 mm (12¾ x 9¾ inches).

Munchen: 1860. A very nice copy of this albumen print by Franz Hanfstaengl, which reproduces a fresco present in the Prussian State Gallery of the Imperial Palace. The original painting was by Hermann Wislicenus. The photograph size is 19cm x 25cm. The backing card (with printed publication details) is 35.5 x 45.cm. The photographg is in excellent condition, with good quality, sepia tones. The backing card is sound, but has some darkening, and has a little edgewear to it. Slight foxing to the rear of the board. Overall an excellent example of this rare photograph. Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl (1804–1877) was a Bavarian painter, lithographer, and photographer. After some time producing lithographic reproductions of art works, he also opened a photographic studio in Munich in 1853. Although this image is undated, it is around 1860. He produced a well known series of photographs of eminent citizens.

Bien que cette image ne soit pas datée, elle se situe vers 1860. Il a produit une série bien connue de photographies de citoyens éminents.

The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. Each portfolio has the title in gilt to the spine (Somewhat faded to series 2.) Both portfolios are split to the bottom few centimetres of the spine. Still holding up well though. Each then has a title page (Quite darkened to series 1. a little to series 2). 4 pages of descriptive text of the hotels / plates (In good condition to both with a little edgewear only). Then follow the 40 plates to each volume. These are all in good, clean condition with no significant flaws to them. Beautiful black and white photographs reproduced in photo-type by Alary Ruelle. These first editions are the first 2 in what would be 22 volumes covering the architecture of Paris. The author was part of the Society of History and Archaeology of the VIIth arrondissement. 460 by 330mm (18 by 13 inches). Please note, these volumes weigh 5kg. William Warwick James OBE was one of the foremost dental surgeons of his time; and a pioneer in maxillofacial surgery. Benjamin William Fickling CBE was a dentist and doctor who played a major part in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialised discipline. A seminal work by these two specialists.
