Captain Jack (John Newman) Gilbey b.1888 was the older brother of Alfred Newman Gilbey, RC priest and long-time Catholic chaplain of Cambridge University. He was the author of several collections of devotional poetry.

    Condition: The cream wrapper has a little marking / foxing to it but is otherwise sound. A touch of handling to the top edge only. The cloth is neat and tidy. Internally the book is clean, with no significant marks.

Several of the pieces had previously appeared in the Catholic Gazette, the Catholic Times and the Irish Rosary. As expected, many of the poems are expressing Roman Catholic beliefs, but others are quite light-hearted (such as "To a pair of Golden Slippers". 32 pages. .

    A scarce item, we can find no other copies at the time of cataloguing. Conforms to OCLC: 39994364. 220 x 140 mm (8¾ x 5½ inches). 117 pages.

    Jacques LABLÉE. Lawyer; man of letters and journalist; printer and bookseller. - Born in Beaugency (Loiret), he moved to Paris in 1780. A lawyer in Paris in 1789, he was appointed president of the Luxembourg section in 1790 and became editor of the "Journal des réclamations". Printed J.-L. Soulavie's "Suite des Mémoires du maréchal duc de Richelieu" at 7 rue (de) Condé in Paris, under the name "Imprimerie de la collection des Mémoires du règne de Louis XV". Launches in 1792 "Le Fanal parisien, a newspaper necessary to citizens who wish to enlighten themselves about their true interests...". Appointed before Sept. 1793 as general administrator of military supplies, he was imprisoned for six months under the Terror. Until 1810, he was public prosecutor for the Loiret region. Author of numerous literary, historical and political works, he notably wrote "Guillaume le Conquérant, ou la Descente en Angleterre, romance historique" in 1814. Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur on August 17, 1814. Wrote and published in 1823 "Relation de ce qui s'est passé au palais du Luxembourg, deux mois avant le départ de Monsieur". Died in Paris in March 1841 (Fron BnF).

Couvertures en papier bleu pâle / gris ; un peu usées / assombries, et le papier s'est fendu au dos (a été recouvert de ruban adhésif d'archivage à un moment donné). La page de titre est la première page, et celle-ci porte le reste du bord de la couverture, où il a été collé. Sinon, l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec un peu de noircissement et de rousseur. Plein de biographies charmantes de poètes français. Par exemple, Bernis commence par "Quel dommage pour le peuple de France que ce charmant poète l'ait abandonné si tôt". Inclut un nombre surprenant de biographies de femmes.

Pagination starts from page 49, as does the contents list. So pages are numbered 49 - 92. Clearly complete in itself, and too large for a sample. Perhaps this was intended as part of a larger work? It appears to comprise half of the only similar copy we can find (which has 92 pages and 24 plates but clearly a different title page and frontis). We can find no other similar online. See photos. Matthew Russell, S.J., (1834-1912), who was the editor for almost forty years. Green cloth, with gilt and black titles and design (a harp and title in Celtic style to the front board of each volume). Contains Catholic notes (lives of Saints etc.) fiction and poetry, including several pieces by Aubrey de Vere. Includes the serialized story "Jack Hazlitt" by Richard Baptist O'Brien, the Dean of Limerick. This was the companion volume to "Ailey Moore" and is an Irish American tale. From the library of Syon Abbey in Chudleigh, Devon, with their bookplate to each volume.
    Overall in good condition with a touch of wear to the bindings. The binding to the front hinge has broken - so the front board could flap open at the first gather. This has now been repaired with archival tape but still fragile. A little foxing but still attractive and legible.
