Paris: Librairie Ch. Delagrave, 1902. First edition. A nice copy of this book of fables, complete with 24 full page colour illustrations by Vimar, and a similar number of duo-tone illustrations. Beautiful green bevelled boards, with black and gilt illustrations including a couple of fabulous gilt peacocks. The rear board has been blind stamped, and the spine appears blind stamped as the gilt is considerably faded. Edges are a touch bumped but a clean copy. Inside, the pages are slightly marked, and a little darkened, with a touch of foxing to the contents page. Fractionally bumped binding. Overall though, a decent copy of this work. All edges gilt. 162, (ii). pages. 32.5cm x 26.5cm. Born in Marseille in 1851 and active until his death in 1916, Auguste Vimar was a versatile artist who excelled as painter, sculptor, and illustrator. He earned acclaim for his vigorous, narrative illustrations, which fused naturalism with the sinuous lines and ornamental elegance of Art Nouveau, frequently featuring animals and spirited scenes.

Castleford's Chronicle, also known as the Boke of Brute, is a major Middle English verse chronicle attributed to Thomas Castleford. Composed in the early 14th century, it is one of the longest English chronicles of its time, totaling nearly 40,000 lines in eleven books and a prologue. The work survives in a single manuscript, now held at the State and University Library in Göttingen, Germany. The chronicle tells the history of Britain from its legendary origins, beginning with Albina and her sisters and the arrival of Brutus (a foundational myth popularized by Geoffrey of Monmouth), up to the reign of Edward II in the early 14th century.

Saint-John Perse was the pseudonym of Alexis Leger (1887–1975), a French poet, writer, and diplomat who stands as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. Perse was dismissed from his post by the Vichy government in 1940, stripped of his French nationality, and forced into exile in the United States. After producing some early work, he then focussed on his diplomatic career. This was his first work on his return to poetry. Perse's work was admired by literary contemporaries such as Paul Claudel, André Gide, and André Breton, who viewed him as a "surrealist at a distance." Particularly interesting for the English reader, is the relationship Perse had with T.S. Eliot.

Probably William Robert Wellesley Peel, 1st Earl Peel (1867-1937) the grandson of Sir Robert Peel. Lady Eden was Sybil Frances Grey (1867-1945), the daughter of Sir William Grey, and mother of Sir Anthony Eden. Two of her other sons were to die in action in the first world war. She was painted by several eminent artists including John Singer Sargent and James Macniel Whistler. The later famously ended in a court case when her husband refused to pay Whistler's bill, and the painting was eventually destroyed. She died in 1945. A very nice association copy. 120 pages. 19cm x 13cm.

120 pages. 19cm x 13cm.

This is the second enlarged edition. John Hookham Frere (1769-1846) was an English diplomat and author. His reputation now largely rests on his translations of Aristophanes. His "prospectus and specimen", a mock Arthurian poem, was used extensively by Byron in "Don Juan." Bookplate and signature of Reginald Heber Macaulay from his Eton master Francis St John Thackeray on the occasion of his leaving Eton in 1878. Macaulay (1858-1937) was an amateur English footballer who won the FA cup for the Old Etonians in 1882 and made an appearance for England in 1881. viii, 354., viii, 426., 436. pages. 22cm x 14cm.

. Deuxième édition. Trois volumes.
