There is some browning and foxing throughout (heavier towards the end); the first and last leaf are detached, the rest of the pamphlet loosely bound together. 19, [i] pp. 205 x 130 mm (8 x 5 inches).

Orations were given annually in Boston, often called "municipal Orations"; typically two or more addresses were given. The impetus for the tradition of municipal orations in Boston stemmed from an act passed at a town meeting in March 1783, when it was decided that the annual celebration of commemorating the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770, be replaced with a yearly Independence Day celebration. The local newspaper reported following this oration:

"The Repertory tells us that Mr. Ritchie delivered an excellent Oration. So much the better for Mr. Ritchie! The Oration was doubtless federal, else it could not have been excellent, and it must have abused the President, else it could not have been federal, and it was delivered on the anniversary of independence, a fit federal occasion for abusing the government of our choice! " (American Mercury, 11 August 1808, 2)

Totnes: James Cauty, 2005. First Edition. Limited Edition Print onto 315 gsm archival paper. Edition of 65 stamped and numbered (this is 06/65). Part of the 'Stamps of Mass Destruction' campaign also released as stamps and prints. Stamped and hand numbered in ink to front. "Cautese National Postal Disservice" certificate inclused. Has the "C.N.P.D. Stamps of Mass Destruction Limited Edition". This is one of James Cauty's famous anti-occupation of Iraq protest prints. These stamps were the subject of a legal action in 2003 by Royal Mail alleging copyright infringement. Dimensions: 32.8 x 30.5 cm. Excellent condition. Currently protected in archival film. James (Jimmy) Cauty, was formerly a musician with the band 'The Orb', and was a member of 'KLF'. More recently, he has been an artist, creating works of dissent, and working alongside artists such as Banksy and Billy Childish. He has been involved in Steve Lowe's L-13 Light Industrial workshop. He created the gift shop at Banksy's 'Dismaland'. His work also toured as part of the ADP (Aftermath Dislocation Principle) Riot Tour.

An account of the preliminaries of a treaty between King George of England and the States General of the Netherlands. Text in French. The covers are clean, but internally, this is quite soiled - it seems from a damp atmosphere. This has "num. 32" printed to the title page, and would appear to come originally from a bound collection of Dutch treaties of the period. Pages have separated from their text block. Conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC:66918463. Only two library holdings (Rotterdam and Utrecht), and no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing.

The spine has been reinforced with white archival tape. Still a decent copy. Owner's name to the top of the front cover. Internally complete, clean and tidy throughout, with a little darkening to the pages. Unpaginated but 64 pages. Jean-Jacques Charles Pennès, known as Jean Sennep, (1894-1982). He was celebrated for his political caricatures, contributing to major publications such as L'Action française, Le Figaro, Candide, and L'Écho de Paris. Sennep's art often reflecting his strong views—he was a right-leaning anti-communist but also critical of Nazi Germany and opposed collaboration with the Vichy regime. 32cm x 25cm.

Alfred Rethel's "Auch ein Todtentanz" (Also a Dance of Death) is a series of six wood engravings created in 1848, with explanatory text by Robert Reinick, critiquing the European revolutions of that year. The work draws on medieval Dance of Death motifs like those of Hans Holbein but satirizes revolutionary fervor, portraying Death as a revolutionary figure inciting chaos. This copy is a later printing, perhaps reprinted with a view to the (then recent) Franco-Prussian war and ensuing turmoil. Original hardback portfolio with buckram spine and corners. Black titles. Somewhat stained and darkened, but sound and retaining the original cloth ties. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board. Title page and a leaf of poetry, followed by four pages of preface by Johannes Proelk. These are slightly foxed. Then are the six loose engraved plates. All in very good condition with a little edgewear only. An uncommon work. Produced at the Academic Studio for Woodcutting Art in Dresden under the direction of Professor H. Bürkner. Cet exemplaire est une impression ultérieure, peut-être réimprimée en vue de la guerre franco-prussienne (alors récente) et des troubles qui s'ensuivirent. Portfolio original à couverture rigide avec dos et coins en buckram. Titres en noir. Légèrement taché et noirci, mais en bon état et conservant les attaches en tissu d'origine. Ingolstadt & Esslingen: Krüll and J.F. Schreiber. English translation: "From the War of Liberation 1870. Portrait of a Turko! The avant-garde of the French "army of civilisation" ! Muhamedans destined for the invasion of Southern Germany!" Single sheet printed in original water colour and ink lithograph. 40.5cm x 33 cm. Exceptionally rare old coloured poster on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which Schreiber produced for Krüll'sche Buchhandlung in Ingolstadt. In the upper left margin a larger paper damage with loss of the letter "A" of the title bar. Otherwise in good condition apart from a slight crease and damage to the lower left corner. We can find no copies of this poster on sale at the present time. This is a curious poster. While France and the Ottoman Empire had a long history of alliance and co-operation dating back to the 16th century, by the time of the Franco-Prussian War, this partnership was largely symbolic and did not translate into Ottoman support or intervention during the conflict. We can only assume that this was purely propaganda, in modern terms a "dog whistle" to the racist elements of the German population.

Dans la marge supérieure gauche, un gros dégât de papier avec perte de la lettre "A" de la barre de titre. Sinon, l'affiche est en bon état, à l'exception d'un léger pli et d'un dommage dans le coin inférieur gauche. Nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire de cette affiche en vente à l'heure actuelle. Il s'agit d'une affiche curieuse. Bien que la France et l'Empire ottoman aient une longue histoire d'alliance et de coopération remontant au XVIe siècle, au moment de la guerre franco-prussienne, ce partenariat était largement symbolique et ne s'est pas traduit par un soutien ou une intervention de l'Empire ottoman pendant le conflit. Nous ne pouvons que supposer qu'il s'agissait d'une pure propagande, en termes modernes, d'un "sifflet à chien" destiné aux éléments racistes de la population allemande.

Pictures satirise the modern European woman and her devotion to clothes, sex-appeal, swing music, Hollywood, the "new look", and the American soldiers. The portfolio is a little darkened, and has closed tears to the edges. Previous owner's name to the inside flap. The plates themselves are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. Each has a text in Swiss German to it. 340 by 250mm (13½ by 9¾ inches).

Paris: Calmann Lévy, 1889. First edition. A very nice copy of this dialogue, adorned with a large number of full page caricatures throughout. All in the fin de siécle / art nouveau style. Attractive, unsigned half leather binding, with titles and gilt decorations to the spine. Marbled boards. A little rubbing to the spine and corners, but sound. Fractional loss to the surface leather at the head of the spine. Lovely hand made marbled end papers. Original pale green paper covers are bound in. These have slight foxing to the edges. Although not stated, this is possibly a large paper copy, as the text pages are mostly a little larger (about 1cm extra) to compared to the illustration plates. The pages and plates are a little darkened to the edge, but still attractive. [vi], 120 pages. 23cm x 17.5cm.

Gyp / Bob were the pen names of Sibylle Gabrielle Riquetti de Mirabeau (1849-1932), a French writer, satirist, and caricaturist active during the Belle Époque and the Third Republic. Her writings were marked by strong anti-republican, nationalist, and antisemitic views, and she was an outspoken supporter of General Boulanger and an anti-Dreyfusard. Her political stance led her to state her profession as "anti-Semite" during a court case rather than "writer." She was famous in Parisian society, hosting a well-known salon attended by prominent artists and intellectuals such as Marcel Proust and Edgar Degas. Despite her literary success, she faced financial difficulties and several personal threats including assassination attempts and a kidnapping.

Malgré son succès littéraire, elle a connu des difficultés financières et plusieurs menaces personnelles, notamment des tentatives d'assassinat et un enlèvement.

"The Recruiting Officer" is a 1706 play by the Irish writer George Farquhar, which follows the social and sexual exploits of two English Army officers, the womanising Plume and the cowardly Brazen, Here Captain Plume is up to his tricks! A nice plate, generally in very good condition. Uncoloured. There is a small loss to one corner, a small archival repair to the edge and a few light marks. Overall though a very nice copy of a scarce item. print is 13cm x 20cm. Sheet is 19cm x 24cm. OCLC: 5105702 (whole book). Very small previous owner's name to top of front pastedown. Geoffrey Treasure was a popular history teacher and housemaster at Harrow School. He was the author of several books, mainly about France in the 16th and 17th centuries. 316 pages, including bibliography and index. 225 x 145 mm (8¾ x 5¾ inches).

Privatdruck de Berliner Bibliophilen=Abends, 1906. First edition. This is one of the 100 copies of the limited edition privately produced for the members of the "Berlin Bibliophile Evening" on fine chamois handmade paper with fedis hand-coloured pictures. This special edition was not for sale at the time. The zinc engravings and autotypes came from the studio of 5. Baudouin in Berlin, the printing was done by the company A. W. Zickfeldt in Osterwieck/harz. Full leather signed binding, by P. Kersten. Profuse gilt decoration to the spine and dentelles surround the boards. The binding is somewhat rubbed to the edges, and has rubbing to the edges. Green end papers. After a foreword by Zobeltitz, there are 62 numbered leaves. Most are printed to one side only, but quite a number have poems or illustrations on both sides. Pages are generally clean, but have a touch of marking to some pages. With drawings from "Hogarthiana", some of which were created during Gaudy's military service from 1818 to 1833. "Gaudy used to draw his caricatures on individual sheets of paper, which he later pasted into his 'Hogarthiana' book. His inclination towards satire, which in his poetry sometimes touches on the political realm, is evident in these amusing pictures, as is his harmless humour." (from the Preface). His work was significant enough that Octave Uzanne wrote a piece entitled "Paul Kersten's Decorative Leather Work."
