Anonymous author & printer. 1649 Conforms to OCLC 70699080. 468 pages. Seems to be first edition but not clear. Claude Saumaise (Salmasius) was a French Humanist (1596-1653). This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive French bookplate to the inside board. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

Clean tidy print, with slight untidiness to cut edge (outside the black ruled frame). Fractional browning to edges. Mount is clean and neat. Issued as number 174, in a series entitled: Political sketches - Issued in 5 volumes. (Daniel O'Connell; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) Description is: Lord Grey is endeavouring to allure Mr. O'Connell by the offer of a place. The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title. It is well known that the fish did not bite. This from Mclean. Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B. From No.1 to No. 600. Conforms to the National Portrait Gallery copy: NPG D41109.

Different versions of this image (with couples fighting over the trousers) appeared by different publishers from 1820 until the early twentieth century. Despite this, it is a scarce and ephemeral caricature item, and there are no copies available at the time of listing

A little rubbing to the edges only, with fractional cracking to the rear hinge of one volume. Each bears the bookplate of Kenneth H.M. Connal.* Internally both are clean, with a little foxing to the pages only. Profuse black and white illustrations and a colour frontis to each volume. xxiv, 332., X, 270 pp.
*Kenneth H.M. Connal became Lt Colonel of the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1910. In 1915 he was commanding the Queen s Own Regiment. in 1916 he returned to his medical studies. Deuxieme edition tres augmente. Vers 1870 (pas de date indiquée). 2 tomes. Chacun relié par Maclehose dans un demi-veau simple mais attrayant avec des planches marbrées. Un peu de frottement sur les bords seulement, avec des craquelures fractionnaires sur la charnière arrière d'un volume. Chacun porte l'ex-libris de Kenneth H.M.
