This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive French bookplate to the inside board. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

The Marquess of Blandford (Duke of Marlborough) embracing Daniel O'Connell, The Duke had expressed his sympathy with O'Connell on the subject of Reform in Parliament, and also in distaste for the Catholic Relief Act. Clear image, with moderate foxing to the image. Pasted onto a mustard card backing. Backing card has been trimmed to 2.5cm around the plate. Print is 32cm x 24cm. Backing card is 37cm x 29cm. Also held under a temporary white passe partout. The National Portrait Gallery Hold the original Ref:1882,1209.377 Irish agitator; Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847), Irish politician; MP for Dublin City and Cork County; George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough FSA (1766–1840), styled Marquess of Blandford until 1817, was a British nobleman, politician, peer, and collector of antiquities and books.

. John Doyle was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1822 where he initially worked as a portrait lithographer. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

Hamburg: Das Comitee, 2008. First edition. Signed by the author. An interesting photo-book. Immaculate dust wrapper over immaculate clean cream embossed hardback boards. What appears to be photographs of dictators is actually composite images of individuals from the dictator's homeland. "Between November, 2007 and March, 2008, we took photographs of over 350 people in......... From them emerged the thirteen FACES OF EVIL, assembled from faces of people of the same ethnic origin as the according dictators. For example, the portrait of Hitler consists of 37 people. His nose belongs to an estate agent from Berlin, his upper lip to a locksmith in Dresden. His hair is put together from the hair of an artist in Weiden and a painter in Bamberg. The chin stems from a Hamburg restaurant owner, the eyes are those of a bank advisor in Frankfurt, the lachrymal sacks are from a precision mechanic in Bautzen, the throat is that of a Viennese banker...." So what is the point ? the artist believes dictators emerge "Because society allowed them, sometimes even encouraged them to do their evil. This suggests that a multitude of faces of active and passive accomplices stand behind the face of every dictator. Whilst everyone joins in to say "Never again!" after a reign of terror has ended, history shows that new tyrants can be allowed to rise to power again and again, in all parts of the world." Each of the photograph has a brief essay about the subject, in German and then in English. 119 pages. 31.5cm x 25cm.

The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title. London: Faber and Faber, 1946. First edition. A lovely copy of this first edition work of satirical essays. The opinions of Dexter Foothood on the world. Clean and bright orange and white dust wrapper. A touch of darkening and a few small chips to the bottom edge. Overall though, a very nice example of the scarce wrapper. The book itself is blue cloth with gilt titles. Printed in conformity with the wartime economy standards, but despite this is only slightly darkened. 200 pages. 19.5cm x 13cm.
Dexter Foothood is Marlow's semi-autobiographical character. Louis Marlow was the pseudonym of Louis Umfreville Wilkinson (1881–1966), a British author, lecturer, and biographer. Wilkinson had a notable literary career, associating with prominent figures such as the Powys brothers, Somerset Maugham, and Aleister Crowley. Première édition. Different versions of this image (with couples fighting over the trousers) appeared by different publishers from 1820 until the early twentieth century. Despite this, it is a scarce and ephemeral caricature item, and there are no copies available at the time of listing

Paris: Chez les Marchands de Nouveautés, 1834. First edition thus. A lovely and unique copy of this facetious tale. 107 pp. With hand coloured frontispiece. This very rare edition is accompanied by a double series (except for the first plate, which is found only once) of 48 plates. Extra illustrated copy. The original binding has been preserved, with a cloth spine to allow for the additional plates. The boards have some stains and are darkened. A little rubbing to the edges. The front board shows a printed illustration with text below. After a couple of blank leaves, there is a small catalogue entry for this book pasted down. The original work is then bound in. This is 14cm x 10.5cm. There is a hand coloured frontis, and the engraved title page has a hand coloured vignette to it. Then follow the engraved plates. These are tipped in and larger than the book. (16cm x 12.5cm). In total there are 95 plates. The two states are on slightly different paper stock and are all uncoloured. "Mr. Mayeux is one of the stock characters of modern French caricature, created by Charles Traviés around 1830 and very popular from 1830 to 1848. He symbolizes (between Robert Macair and Mr. Prudhomme) the vanity and stupidity of the petty bourgeois" (Champfleury).

Cette édition très rare est accompagnée d'une double série (à l'exception de la première planche, qui ne se trouve qu'une seule fois) de 48 planches. Exemplaire très illustré. La reliure d'origine a été conservée, avec un dos en toile pour permettre l'ajout des planches. Les planches présentent quelques taches et sont assombries. Les bords sont légèrement frottés. La première planche présente une illustration imprimée avec le texte en dessous. Après quelques feuilles blanches, une petite notice du catalogue de ce livre est collée. L'ouvrage original est ensuite relié. Il mesure 14 cm x 10,5 cm. Il y a un frontispice coloré à la main et la page de titre gravée comporte une vignette colorée à la main. Viennent ensuite les planches gravées. Celles-ci sont insérées par glissement et sont plus grandes que le livre. (16 cm x 12,5 cm). Il y a au total 95 planches. Les deux états sont sur un papier légèrement différent et sont tous non colorés. "M. Mayeux est l'un des personnages phares de la caricature française moderne, créé par Charles Traviés vers 1830 et très populaire de 1830 à 1848. Il symbolise (entre Robert Macair et M. A La Haye: Henri Scheurleer, 1734. First edition thus. (First edition printed in the Netherlands in the same year as the Rollins publication). An attractive four volume set, in full leather with profuse gilt decorations to the spine. Title and volume labels to the spine. The boards are in sound condition but with a little rubbing and loss to some parts. Marbled end papers. Internally, the four volumes are in excellent clean condition. Bears the name in each volume of Jean-Frédéric de Montmollin (1740–1812). He was a prominent statesman, industrialist, and community leader from Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This edition is dedicated to the Prince of Orange. Complete with an attractive folding pictorial family tree and folding map of Spain by I.B. Nolin. It's full title was traditionally known as 'History of the Revolutions of Spain from the Destruction of the Empire of the Goths to the Complete and Perfect Reunification of the Kingdoms.' 'The work of Fr. d'Orleans is exactly included in the first, second and third volumes up to page 139. The rest of the third volume up to page 85 of the fourth is by the late Fr. Cette édition est dédiée au Prince d'Orange. Elle est complète d'un bel arbre généalogique dépliant et d'une carte dépliante de l'Espagne par I.B. Nolin. Le titre complet était traditionnellement connu sous le nom d'"Histoire des révolutions d'Espagne depuis la destruction de l'empire des Goths jusqu'à la réunification complète et parfaite des royaumes". L'œuvre du père d'Orléans est exactement incluse dans les premier, deuxième et troisième volumes jusqu'à la page 139. Le reste du troisième volume jusqu'à la page 85 du quatrième est de feu le Père Brumoy. The London General News and Book Agency, 1918. First edition. of this scarce work of political propaganda / caricature. Published in London, and printed by Richard Clay and sons. This was intended for export to the Dutch / Belgian market, and the text is in Dutch. The publisher's details are from a small ink stamp to the final plate. Original soft grey paper covers with one of Raemaekers' caricatures to the front cover. Small bookshop ink stamp to the foot of the front cover. Rear cover blank. The covers are clean and neat, but there is some splitting to the base of the spine. The inside cover has the introduction / forward by Raemaekers (often lacking in re-bound copies). 48 caricatures showing the suffering of troops / civilians in the First World War. 48 pages. 30cm x 24cm. John Hayward. A plate from "Human Passions Delineated" first edition, published in Manchester in 1773. A nice plate, mocking the hypocrisy of the religious. The devil, dressed in religious robes, steals money whilst singing hymns with another man. Uncoloured. Plate is in good clean condition. There is a small loss to one corner, a slight creasing and a few light marks. Evidence of reinforcement to the rear. Overall though a very nice copy of a scarce item. print is 13cm x 20cm. There is no cover or binding (This this was one of Ochs portfolio works and should have had a plain green card folder). There is no printed or limitation details. There was also originally a dedication page which is lacking. Nevertheless, 19 rare colour portraits by Ochs. Trasensters, the Habets, Louis Canon-Legrand, Édouard de Roubaix, Edgar Forgeur, Léon Noirfalise, Hector Pouleur, Constant Piret.... The plates are mostly written in pencil with the subject on the blank rear. There is a touch of foxing to the sheets. The title sheet is quite darkened. 320 by 230mm (12½ by 9 inches).
