Shanghai: Shenbao, C1889. First edition thus. A nice example of the Dianshizhai Pictorial, which operated as a supplement to the Shenboa newspaper, created by the English publisher Ernest Major. For a while it was China's most popular newspaper. The first leaf gives the titles of individual pictorial stories in this issue. This copy contains 97 stories / double page illustrations. The book is in folded leaf binding (where a folded leaf is bound into the spine, thus hiding the rear of the woodblock print. The stories in the work are a mix of news, crime and inventions from abroad. Often rather fabulous. For example, this book begins with "Giant pincer rewards virtue" (a tale of a giant crab) and ends with "love turns into hatred" where a westerner shoots his erstwhile lover. Also covered are military actions, and the arrival of western warships. The covers are somewhat dirty and marked, and the pages are a touch darkened. A few of the folded leaves have been split, with some minor edgewear. This is, after all, a newspaper supplement! Many of the texts in this issue are supplied by Tian Zilin (田子琳) who wrote the somewhat poetic columns above the woodcut. The main artist was Wu Youru. This issue also includes issues by Zhang Zhiying, The Dianshizhai issued one booklet every ten days (旬刊), meaning three booklets per month, 36 per year. Each booklet contained roughly 8 illustrations with accompanying stories. So 97 stories/illustrations would represent 2 booklets. This makes this this issue of four months bound together is complete in itself. The Dianshizhai organised its output not into annual volumes but into named volumes using the Ten Heavenly Stems (天干 — Tiāngān: 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸), each stem representing a collected volume of variable size. 壬 is the ninth stem, meaning this is the ninth named volume in the series. This places it into the years 1888 or 1889. 24cm x 14cm.

Les récits contenus dans l'ouvrage sont un mélange d'actualités, de faits divers et d'inventions venues de l'étranger. Ils sont souvent assez fabuleux. Par exemple, ce livre commence par « La pince géante récompense la vertu » (un conte mettant en scène un crabe géant) et se termine par « L'amour se transforme en haine », où un Occidental abat son ancienne amante. Sont également abordés les opérations militaires et l'arrivée de navires de guerre occidentaux. Les couvertures sont quelque peu sales et marquées, et les pages sont légèrement noircies. Quelques-unes des feuilles pliées se sont déchirées, avec quelques légères usures sur les bords. Il s'agit, après tout, d'un supplément de journal ! Bon nombre des textes de ce numéro sont fournis par Tian Zilin (田子琳), qui a rédigé les chroniques quelque peu poétiques figurant au-dessus des gravures sur bois. L'artiste principal était Wu Youru. Ce numéro comprend également des contributions de Zhang Zhiying. Le Dianshizhai publiait un livret tous les dix jours (旬刊), soit trois livrets par mois, 36 par an. Roma: Tipografica la Piramide, 1981. An attractive lithographic poster of this famous caricature by Grosz. Originally drawn in 1920 in a limited edition. The poster was produced on high quality paper stock (watermarked Ingres fabriano). 70cm x 50cm. It was also produced in a more generic format, without the galleria name in the lines at the bottom. Condition is very good, with a little creasing to one corner, but no tears. Very slight foxing
to the front and back but no major marks. Overall a very nice condition poster. George Grosz (1893-1959) George Grosz was a German artist known especially for his caricature drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. He was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity groups during the Weimar Republic. He emigrated to the United States in 1933, returning to Berlin before his death.

George Grosz (1893-1959) George Grosz était un artiste allemand connu surtout pour ses dessins caricaturaux et ses peintures de la vie berlinoise des années 1920. Il était un membre éminent des groupes berlinois Dada et Nouvelle Objectivité pendant la République de Weimar. Il a émigré aux États-Unis en 1933 et est retourné à Berlin avant sa mort.

John Hayward. A plate from "Human Passions Delineated" first edition, published in Manchester in 1773. A nice plate, mocking the drunken farmer. Uncoloured. Plate is in good clean condition. A closed tear has been repaired with evidence of reinforcement to the rear. Overall though a very nice copy of a scarce item. print is 13cm x 20cm. Sheet is 19cm x 24cm. OCLC: 5105702 (whole book). The book presents itself as the king's personal meditations, prayers, and reflections during his imprisonment, portraying him as a pious martyr steadfast in faith amid political turmoil [12], 272 pages.

This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive armorial ex libris belonging to I.L.B. De Neve to the inside board. They were likely a member of the De Neve family, a name associated with the Low Countries. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

Paris: Le Grelot, 1892. First edition. A hand coloured caricature on parliamentary immunity in late nineteenth century France. The works satirises the relationship between voters (électeurs) and elected officials (élus) during France's Third Republic. Originally the front cover from Le Grelot for 14th February 1892, and so hand coloured, this copy has been cut down (removing the paper header) and pasted onto a stiff card backing sheet, thus making it suitable for framing. A later hand has written the newspaper title and the date to the top edge. In very good, clean condition. There is a repaired closed tear to the bottom edge of the print. An attractive piece of political satire, suitable for framing. 35cm x 31cm. Édouard Pépin, the pseudonym of French painter and caricaturist Claude Guillaumin (1842-1927), made significant contributions to the satirical magazine Le Grelot as a political caricaturist targeting Bonapartism, monarchism, and clericalism.

The Marquess of Blandford (Duke of Marlborough) embracing Daniel O'Connell, The Duke had expressed his sympathy with O'Connell on the subject of Reform in Parliament, and also in distaste for the Catholic Relief Act. Clear image, with moderate foxing to the image. Pasted onto a mustard card backing. Backing card has been trimmed to 2.5cm around the plate. Print is 32cm x 24cm. Backing card is 37cm x 29cm. Also held under a temporary white passe partout. The National Portrait Gallery Hold the original Ref:1882,1209.377 Irish agitator; Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847), Irish politician; MP for Dublin City and Cork County; George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough FSA (1766–1840), styled Marquess of Blandford until 1817, was a British nobleman, politician, peer, and collector of antiquities and books.

. John Doyle was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1822 where he initially worked as a portrait lithographer. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

Hamburg: Das Comitee, 2008. First edition. Signed by the author. An interesting photo-book. Immaculate dust wrapper over immaculate clean cream embossed hardback boards. What appears to be photographs of dictators is actually composite images of individuals from the dictator's homeland. "Between November, 2007 and March, 2008, we took photographs of over 350 people in......... From them emerged the thirteen FACES OF EVIL, assembled from faces of people of the same ethnic origin as the according dictators. For example, the portrait of Hitler consists of 37 people. His nose belongs to an estate agent from Berlin, his upper lip to a locksmith in Dresden. His hair is put together from the hair of an artist in Weiden and a painter in Bamberg. The chin stems from a Hamburg restaurant owner, the eyes are those of a bank advisor in Frankfurt, the lachrymal sacks are from a precision mechanic in Bautzen, the throat is that of a Viennese banker...." So what is the point ? the artist believes dictators emerge "Because society allowed them, sometimes even encouraged them to do their evil. This suggests that a multitude of faces of active and passive accomplices stand behind the face of every dictator. Whilst everyone joins in to say "Never again!" after a reign of terror has ended, history shows that new tyrants can be allowed to rise to power again and again, in all parts of the world." Each of the photograph has a brief essay about the subject, in German and then in English. 119 pages. 31.5cm x 25cm.

L'artiste estime que les dictateurs émergent "parce que la société les a autorisés, parfois même encouragés à faire le mal". Cela suggère qu'une multitude de visages de complices actifs et passifs se cachent derrière le visage de chaque dictateur. (Daniel O'Connell; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) Description is: Lord Grey is endeavouring to allure Mr. O'Connell by the offer of a place. The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title. London: Faber and Faber, 1946. First edition. A lovely copy of this first edition work of satirical essays. The opinions of Dexter Foothood on the world. Clean and bright orange and white dust wrapper. A touch of darkening and a few small chips to the bottom edge. Overall though, a very nice example of the scarce wrapper. The book itself is blue cloth with gilt titles. Printed in conformity with the wartime economy standards, but despite this is only slightly darkened. 200 pages. 19.5cm x 13cm.
Dexter Foothood is Marlow's semi-autobiographical character. Louis Marlow was the pseudonym of Louis Umfreville Wilkinson (1881–1966), a British author, lecturer, and biographer.
