John Wilson was an English playwright, lawyer, and one time Recorder of Londonderry. His play The Cheats - included in this volume - was one of the first produced after the Restoration. London: R. Ackermann, 1828. A lovely copy of this first edition in the original orange blind stamped publisher's cloth. Binding is clean,, with a little bumping to the corners. Gilt to the spine is bright, but a little rubbed to the image of Tom himself. There is a small nick / loss to the head of the spine, and a small splash of water (?) damage to the front board, otherwise excellent. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board for Edward Francis Hutton.* Internally the book is in very good condition, with a little darkening to the page edges only. A few minor foxing spots. The hand coloured lithographs are in excellent condition. There is an interesting 10 page catalogue for Ackermann books to the rear (no other copies available seem to have this). Hutton & Co. with his brother. His daughter was the American actress and philanthropist Dina Merrill. He was uncle to Barbara Hutton, dubbed "The poor little rich girl" during the depression. He was passionate about yachts, and one figures prominently on his bookplate. Of interest today, he built the 127 room Mar-a-lago as a winter residence in 1927. Donated to the nation on his wife's death in 1973, it was later acquired by Donald Trump, and proved temporarily useful for storing state secrets (allegedly).

La dorure du dos est brillante, mais un peu frottée sur l'image de Tom lui-même. Il y a une petite entaille / perte à la tête du dos, et une petite éclaboussure d'eau ( ?) sur la planche avant, autrement excellent. Pairs: Dubochet, Le Chevalier, 1846. First edition in original cloth. A very nice example of this work, with 32 full page illustrations by Grandville and numerous (200) vignettes in the text. Cloth decorated with gilt detail, titles and decoration. Front design (an armourial crest) is also coloured in red and blue. Good condition, with just a little handing and fading to the boards. No significant damage. Yellow end papers. Pages a clean, with a little foxing / darkening only. Overall a very nice example. All edges gilt. Tissue guards over the full page engravings. Louis Reybaud (1799-1879), a French economist, journalist, man of letters and politician. This work is a satirical novel, "One of the best productions of Grandville" (Carteret). La toile est décorée de détails, de titres et de décorations dorés. Le motif du frontispice (un écusson armorié) est également coloré en rouge et bleu. Bon état, avec juste un peu de manipulation et de décoloration sur les planches. Pas de dommages importants. Papiers de garde jaunes. Les pages sont propres, avec seulement quelques rousseurs / noircissements. Dans l'ensemble, un très bel exemplaire. Toutes les tranches sont dorées. Les gravures pleine page sont protégées par des gardes de tissus. Louis Reybaud (1799-1879), économiste, journaliste, homme de lettres et homme politique français. London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co, 1853. A lovely collection of these Sporting novels, 80 hand coloured illustrations (plus a further 4 unlisted but hand coloured title vignettes). Uniform half morocco with patterned cloth boards. Gilt titles and decorations to spine. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little unobtrusive rubbing only. Internally, the books are all in good, clean condition. The hand coloured plates are attractive, with a little intermittent foxing only. A very nice group of Victorian illustrated hunting books. Unsure of edition, but from the titles listed to title pages, it would seem that these are all later editions.

A l'intérieur, les livres sont tous en bon état et propres. Les planches colorées à la main sont attrayantes, avec seulement quelques rousseurs intermittentes. Un très bel ensemble de livres de chasse illustrés de l'époque victorienne. L'édition est incertaine, mais d'après les titres listés sur les pages de titre, il semblerait qu'il s'agisse d'éditions plus tardives.

Original pale green soft covers are bound in to front and rear. The book block is clean and tidy, with a little darkening consistent with age. A very nice copy. 307 pages. 180 by 120mm (7 by 4¾ inches).
Published in 1894, two years before the death of the writer, Domnine is the last work of Paul Arène, written in Antibes where he had retired and where he died in 1896. We find, in this novel, again all the charm and originality of Provence celebrated through his works. Arène plunges us into a passionate and tumultuous love story. The story revolves around the eponymous character, Domnine, a young woman of bewitching beauty and strong character. She is courted by many men, but her heart belongs to a young man called Raymond. However, their love is put to the test by the obstacles and intrigues that threaten their happiness.
Paul Arène (1843-1896), born in Sisteron, had a degree in philosophy and was a secondary school teacher; he opted for Paris, journalism and literature. There he met Alphonse Daudet and played a major role in the writing of Lettres de mon Moulin. He served as a captain in the 1870 war. After 1870, he published a number of plays, poems and stories. His "Provençal" works, which have almost single-handedly passed into posterity and have remained popular ever since, are particularly noteworthy: La Chèvre d'Or, La Gueuse parfumée, les Contes de Provence, le Midi bouge, etc.

Publié en 1894, deux ans avant la mort de l'écrivain, Domnine est le dernier ouvrage de Paul Arène, écrit à Antibes où il s'était retiré et où il mourut en 1896. On retrouve, dans ce roman, tout le charme et l'originalité de la Provence célébrée à travers ses oeuvres. Arène nous plonge dans une histoire d'amour passionnée et tumultueuse. L'histoire tourne autour du personnage éponyme, Domnine, une jeune femme à la beauté envoûtante et au caractère bien trempé. Elle est courtisée par de nombreux hommes, mais son cœur appartient à un jeune homme, Raymond. Mais leur amour est mis à l'épreuve par les obstacles et les intrigues qui menacent leur bonheur.

Quarter cloth and papered boards; spine title label; top edge trimmed, others uncut; covers lightly darkened to the edges and spines. corners slightly bumped; spine label a little tanned and slightly chipped. An attractive copy. Printed in red and black on paper made in Ireland. Published by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats at the house of Evelyn Gleeson in Dundrum. [1], 55, [1] pp. 215 x 150 mm (8½ x 6 inches).

Elizabeth Corbet Yeats was the sister of W.B. Yeats. She was a founder of Dundrum Press. The press published 11 books. She worked alongside Evelyn Gleeson, an English embroiderer. Relations were strained, and the press ended in 1908. Elizabeth (known as Lolly) went on to found Cuala Press with W.B. Gleeson continued Dun Emer after the split, and after her death it continued until 1964.

Internally clean, but with sporadic foxing. Schwartz was a Dutch poet and novelist, who wrote in English (and published in England). Once highly rated, he is now rather forgotten. xii, 79pp.
