The Gift of Life, OMK Page Edition. 'Operation Magic Kingdom' was a billboard and street poster campaign in London (2007) against the Iraq war. This was also released as stamps and prints. OMK blind stamped and hand numbered in pencil to front. Has official CNPD red stamp on verso. With 4 binding holes in the left hand margin. Dimensions: 35,8 cm x 30.5cm. Excellent condition. Currently protected in archival film. James (Jimmy) Cauty, was formerly a musician with the band 'The Orb', and was a member of 'KLF'. More recently, he has been an artist, creating works of dissent, and working alongside artists such as Banksy and Billy Childish. He has been involved in Steve Lowe's L-13 Light Industrial workshop. He created the gift shop at Banksy's 'Dismaland'. His work also toured as part of the ADP (Aftermath Dislocation Principle) Riot Tour.

Berlin: NP, 1948. A pencil sketch showing a classical monument (which also shows similarity to a Chess Rook). It has the wreath of France to it. Towards the top, is the shining face of Hitler. To the bottom of the statue is a small, but obvious pile of excrement ! It is signed to the lower left corner. Held under Passe Partout. The sketch is good, in clean condition, with light creasing to it. 35.5cm x 24cm. The Passe Partout and frame are 38cm x 38.5cm. To the reverse of the sheet are several sketches and the name Bertrand Monnet. The sheet was obviously folded at some point. Held under glass in a simple wooden frame. Our belief is that the sketch was made whilst Monnet was the mission officer in the occupation zone immediately after the war.

Bertrand Jules Monnet, (1910-1989) was a Parisian architect, who qualified from the School of Fine Arts in 1939. He was particularly engaged as an architect of Historical Monuments. He was appointed Chief Architect of Historic Monuments in 1942 (This means that he was a member of Les Architectes en Chef des Monuments Historiques (ACMH) not THE chief architect). He was mission officer to the military government of the free zone of occupation in Germany in 1946-1949. On his return to France, he was architect for a number of prestigious buildings and was both Vice President and President of ACMH.

Vers le haut, on voit le visage brillant d'Hitler. Au bas de la statue se trouve un petit, mais évident, tas d'excréments ! Il est signé dans le coin inférieur gauche. Détenu sous Passe Partout. L'esquisse est en bon état, propre, avec de légers plis. 35,5 cm x 24 cm. Le Passe Partout et le cadre mesurent 38 cm x 38,5 cm. Au verso de la feuille figurent plusieurs croquis et le nom de Bertrand Monnet. La feuille a manifestement été pliée à un moment donné. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre en bois. Nous pensons que le croquis a été réalisé alors que Monnet était chargé de mission dans la zone d'occupation immédiatement après la guerre.

Bertrand Jules Monnet (1910-1989) était un architecte parisien, diplômé de l'École des beaux-arts en 1939. Il s'est particulièrement investi dans l'architecture des monuments historiques. Il est nommé architecte en chef des monuments historiques en 1942 (ce qui signifie qu'il est membre des Architectes en Chef des Monuments Historiques (ACMH) et non architecte en chef). Il a été chargé de mission auprès du gouvernement militaire de la zone libre d'occupation en Allemagne en 1946-1949. De retour en France, il a été architecte de nombreux bâtiments prestigieux et a été à la fois vice-président et président des ACMH.

London: Thos McLean, 1830. First Edition. Sketch #37 in the political sketches series. The king reads a bill by candle light. "It seems pretty evident that the Windsor correspondent of the Morning Herald meant only to pay a compliment to His Majesty's eyesight, which, at the age of sixty-nine, must have been pretty good if he could read the newspaper by candle-light, without the aid of glasses ; but the writer, in order to give his compliment the greater force, has almost left His Majesty in the dark ; for gloomy, indeed, must be any of the lofty rooms of Windsor- Castle, if lighted only by a single candle. H. B. has caught a very humorous view of the compliment, and made it apply, not to optics, but to domestic economy ; and here is George IV., the luxurious George IV.-the Comus of Carlton-House--the restorer of Windsor- Castle at the expense of a million of money-the builder of Buckingham Palace and the Pavilion at Brighton : he who never calculated the cost of whatever might promote his indulgence or gratify his taste :-here is this dignified, splendour loving

NP, C1975. A very nice printing of this slightly homoerotic cartoon / caricature, showing a sombrero wearing man with a whip and a falcon, standing on a black man who is sucking his toes. An unusual an somewhat surreal poster. With Carrance's monogram to the image (half hidden in a feather) and his signature (possibly printed) to the bottom of the sheet. Scarce item, we cannot find any other copies of this online. 58.5cm x 42cm. Fractional edgewear only. Slightly darkened to rear. Evidence of having been stuck on a wall. Stiff glossy art card. Raymond Carrance (1921-1998) was a French cartoonist and photographer, also known as Czanara. He also illustrated a number of books. Carrance created a private catalogue of homoerotic dreamscapes under the pseudonym "Czanara". Hi photography was also largely of young athletic men.

London: Thos McLean, 1833. A nice copy of this political satire by Doyle. #261 in Doyle's series of political sketches. Sir John Cam Hobhouse had been forced to resign his posts as both MP for Westminster and Secretary of State for Ireland on a minor point of principle. He expected to be re-confirmed in the post but Colonel Evans (Sir de Lacy Evans), as represented in the sketch, stepped in, and snatched away the seat for Westminster; and the re-appointment to the office of Irish Secretary was postponed sine die. Sir F. Burdett, though stretching out his arm as if to save him, sees that assistance is in vain ; and the phlegmatic Lord Althorp, behind, appears to be saying, " Never mind, let him go." Print is 29cm x 37.5cm. It is pasted onto a mustard backing sheet of 35cm x 50cm. Both are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of light foxing to the satire. Small embossed stamp of authenticity (by Thos. McClean) to the lower left. A very nice copy. Neat an clean plate, with very fractional foxing (barely noticeable) pasted onto a mustard backing sheet. This is in good order, with a little darkening and edge wear to the right edge only. "An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P96. Lords Brougham and Plunket, on their return to London, from a visit to Windsor Castle, were caught in a fog and lost their way, chiefly, it was said, in consequence of the efforts which the postillions had been making to fortify themselves against the weather. Lord Brougham has mounted the ample shoulders of Lord Plunket, to take an observation, on the principle mentioned by Swift, who says, "It is with human intellects as it is with liquors, the lightest is ever at the top." The appearance of the drivers bears testimony to the fact that strong ale has had something to do with the disaster; and for the solution of the riddle of " Reform Bill," whose ale appears to have done the mischief.

John Doyle (1797–1868), known by the pen name H.B., was an influential Irish caricaturist, political cartoonist, painter, and lithographer. He is considered a pioneer of "polite caricature," a style that avoided grotesque exaggerations and instead relied on wit and subtle humor to critique political figures and events. His work marked a departure from the harsh satire of earlier artists like James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

John Hayward. A plate from "Human Passions Delineated" first edition, published in Manchester in 1773. A nice plate, satirising the poor Jack Tar who was cheated by his employer. Uncoloured. Plate is in good clean condition. A very small closed tear to the bottom edge. Overall though a very nice copy of a scarce item. print is 13cm x 20cm. Sheet is 19cm x 24cm. OCLC: 5105702 (whole book). We have a number of different plates from this work, and can offer discounts for multiple purchases.

Tokyo: Wakasaya Yoichi (若狹屋与市), C1843. First edition. A lovely copy of this rare woodblock print. Believed to by by Utagama Kunisada circa 1843. The print, in bright colours, shows a group of seven sumo masters looking down on a group of wrestlers fighting. There are also two clothed Sumo masters standing amongst the students. There are 20 students. The teachers have names in labels by each of them, and they are clearly recognisable characters. The work bears the publisher's seal of Wakasaya Yoichi, an eminent Tokyo publisher, who printed many famous artists. This is part of the reason for our attribution, as Kunisada often portrayed both individual wrestlers, and groups of sumo wrestlers and wrestling schools. He also regularly published with Wakasaya Yoichi. A excelent example, there is a light crease to the bottom part of the print (which could probably be ironed out). The edges have fractional nicking, but overall is in very nice condition. 37cm x 25cm. A rare piece. We cannot find another example of this particular woodblock print.

Deux maîtres de sumo vêtus se tiennent également au milieu des élèves. Les élèves sont au nombre de 20. Les professeurs portent des noms dans des étiquettes à côté de chacun d'eux, et ce sont des personnages clairement reconnaissables. L'œuvre porte le sceau de l'éditeur Wakasaya Yoichi, un éminent éditeur de Tokyo qui a imprimé de nombreux artistes célèbres. C'est en partie la raison de notre attribution, car Kunisada a souvent représenté des lutteurs individuels, des groupes de lutteurs de sumo et des écoles de lutte. Il a également publié régulièrement avec Wakasaya Yoichi. Un excellent exemple, il y a un léger pli sur la partie inférieure de l'impression (qui pourrait probablement être repassé). Les bords sont légèrement entaillés, mais l'ensemble est en très bon état. 37cm x 25cm. Une pièce rare. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemple de cette gravure sur bois.

Mounted onto stiff paper, the engraving is in good, clean condition. Signed in the plate. The names of the drinkers are engraved by each figure. Engraving is 17cm x 23.5cm.

C1895. In the mid 19th century, Bilbille went from Paris to Leipzig fair, via the fabric producing towns of Mulhouse and Saint-Gall, buying and selling fabric samples. This original hand embellished advertising poster has been created to promote an industrial collaboration. It shows a fashionable female of the time in a dress which has been highlighted in places with a lighter colour. She is holding an umbrella or parasol. We have not been able to find anything else like this online or in auction records. Could it be it was a one-off? In frame, under glass. Size of image: 595 x 470 mm (23½ x 18½ inches).

Paris: Aubert & Cie, C1840. First edition. A lovely hand coloured caricature by the little known French caricaturist Jules Platier. An old lady speaks to an ancient sodier, and tells him that there are cherry trees near the guard house which he may scare! Perhaps a reference to his red cheeks or uniform? This plate is the 15th in the series published by Aubert under the ironic title Les Jolis Petits Visages, comprising 20 plates published between 1839 and 1841.  These also appeared in black in La Nouvelle Lanterne Magique from the same publisher. Beautifully coloured. Very slightly darkened sheet, with evidence of being hung / tipped in at some point. Fractional edgewear but overall an excellent example. 27.5cm x 36cm. Jules Platier is one of the least known French caricaturists, despite his evident skill. His wonderful compositions show a high level of artistic skill. His birth and death dates or places are unknown. He was particularly associated with the Parisian publishing house established by Charles Philippon and Gabriel Aubert.

Magnifiquement colorées. Feuillet très légèrement assombri, avec des traces d'accrochage ou de collage à un moment donné. Les bords sont légèrement usés mais il s'agit dans l'ensemble d'un excellent exemplaire. 27,5 cm x 36 cm. Jules Platier est l'un des caricaturistes français les moins connus, malgré son talent évident. Ses merveilleuses compositions témoignent d'un haut niveau d'habileté artistique. Les dates et lieux de sa naissance et de sa mort sont inconnus. Il était particulièrement associé à la maison d'édition parisienne fondée par Charles Philippon et Gabriel Aubert.

Nice clean example with just a touch of handing, and a couple of tiny spots to the top right edge. Nice example of a modern Momento Mori. Images 22cm x 15cm. Sheet 27.5cm x 38cm.

Editions Langlaude, 2021. First edition thus. A beautiful fine art, limited reproduction of this iconic art deco poster. Originally produced by Harper's Bazaar, as the November 1920 Winter Fashions catalogue cover, this edition, on heavy, matte, fine art paper is limited to 50 numbered copies. (this is copy 5). In perfect condition, the vibrant red of this poster is particularly striking. A large piece, the coloured image is 64cm x 50cm whilst the poster itself is 80cm x 60cm. Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) had an extraordinary and defining relationship with Harper's Bazaar magazine. From 1915 to 1936, he contributed over 240 covers and more than 2,500 illustrations, including fashion drawings, accessories, interior designs, and even society columns for the magazine. His work established an iconic Art Deco aesthetic for Harper's Bazaar, with bold colors, geometric forms, and elaborate couture designs that helped revolutionize fashion illustration and set the magazine apart as a creative leader during the early 20th century.
