    A Country Gentleman [MENCE, Richard].
A Full View of the Roman Catholic Question.

    Edition: First Edition

London: 1813. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work,…

Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp

Brethren in Iniquity: Or, the Confederacy of Papists with Sectaries, for the Destroying of the True Religion, as by Law Establish'd, plainly detected.

London: Randal Taylor, 1690. Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. The second part (Coninciano le Lettioni) has a separate pagination, but was always intended to be part of the same work, the main part finishing the register at Nn8 - the continuation beginning Aaa. There are a large number of woodcuts throughout, and each new date / lesson, has a historiated capital. A very nice copy. The vellum binding is somewhat darkened and with a little marking, but is still flexible and has no cracks to it. The hand written spine label is still legible. Internally, clean and tidy throughout. There is a little darkening to the pages with the odd page having foxing spots. A few of the pages have tiny nicks to the edges and there is a tiny amount of worm damage to the rear of the book, but none affecting the text. Overall a very nice copy of this work. This is a reprint of this work. There were numerous editions, and variations of the work by different publishers. This work is translated by Remigio Fiorentino. His real name was Remigio Nannini. He was born in Florence (Firenze) Circa 1521 He died in 1581, and was a Dominican. This was his most popular work. Angelieri published his edition from 1590. Final 3 pages, Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book (So ends at page 92). All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 (last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel); f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired, and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age, there are also tiny tears, nicks and edgewear, and a general darkening of the pages, nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible, because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3, Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed figge tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only (if at all) so these are actually leaf numbers (so we refer to fn). To confuse matters further, the book of psalms numbers each page, not leaf. Full collation: [ii], 1-554, [1-98], [1]-91.pp Collation: [lacks blank q1], q2-Zzz10, A-L2, A-G3. Our copy substantially conforms to Darlow & Moule 225a. The states that it is substantially a close reprint of the 1605 quarto, with text ending on fo.554 (as does ours for the OT and NT) and with Gen. i. 3: 'Then God Sayd...' 240 by 170mm (9½ by 6¾ inches).

Another stamp to the first leaf for "Collegium Angiense Societis Jesus" (Jesuits founded schools established on the principles of Ignatius and called them Collegium). Period (possibly contemporary) full leather. Six raised bands to the spine. Gilt titles and decorations to the spine. The binding is a little rubbed to the edges, with cracking to the spine edges, with loss of leather cover to the spine edges. The contents of the book are in excellent condition, with a few foxing spots only.
The first comprehensive history of the Society of Jesus and at the same time one of the most important works on the history of the missions, especially in the East Asian region. Contains numerous Chapter on China and Japan. De Backer-S. V, 1935. 4 and VII, 366, 6. Streit I, 172. Old Japan cat. 1096. Laures 340. Although the first part was issued in 1614, Worldcat does not record any holdings of the 1614 edition. Folio.

Between 1656 and 1658, Bonichon wrote three tracts on the subject of the authority of Bishops in the ecclesiastical hierarchy (over the authority of clergy). A hot topic in France at the time apparently! The hierarchy stood with Bonichon against the clergy. [xxviii], 776, [2] pp. 250 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches). [xxviii], 776, [2] pp. 250 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches).

The boards are a little bumped, with slight loss of surface in parts. The vellum is in very good condition. Title in red and black with attractive vignette. The text block is in very good condition, with fractional darkening, and a light stain to the top edge of some pages. Throughout the book, the pages have been trimmed to close to the top edge (and to a few pages to the right edge). This means that there is no top margin, and on some pages slight loss of page header. (All text and headers are still legible). Overall a very good copy of a Protestant bible with a simple layout. [vi], 647. [i]. pages. 200 by 160mm (7¾ by 6¼ inches). David Martin (Revel 1639-Utrecht 1721), was a Protestant theologian, He moved to Holland following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. . [vi], 647. [i]. pages.
