    A Country Gentleman [MENCE, Richard].
A Full View of the Roman Catholic Question.

    Edition: First Edition

London: 1813. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work,…

Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp

    [ANON]
Brethren in Iniquity: Or, the Confederacy of Papists with Sectaries, for the Destroying of the True Religion, as by Law Establish'd, plainly detected.

London: Randal Taylor, 1690. Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. Publisher's introduction, Saint days of the year (with a small woodcut for each month), contents, and text. The pagination runs to page 572. The second part (Coninciano le Lettioni) has a separate pagination, but was always intended to be part of the same work, the main part finishing the register at Nn8 - the continuation beginning Aaa. There are a large number of woodcuts throughout, and each new date / lesson, has a historiated capital. A very nice copy. The vellum binding is somewhat darkened and with a little marking, but is still flexible and has no cracks to it. The hand written spine label is still legible. Internally, clean and tidy throughout. There is a little darkening to the pages with the odd page having foxing spots. A few of the pages have tiny nicks to the edges and there is a tiny amount of worm damage to the rear of the book, but none affecting the text. Overall a very nice copy of this work. This is a reprint of this work. There were numerous editions, and variations of the work by different publishers. This work is translated by Remigio Fiorentino. His real name was Remigio Nannini. He was born in Florence (Firenze) Circa 1521 He died in 1581, and was a Dominican. This was his most popular work. Angelieri published his edition from 1590. Overall this book is in very good condition. The full leather binding is a little rubbed and cracked, but is holding well and not in danger of breaking. The titles to the spine have lost all trace of gilt (if any) and now appear blind embossed. Early owner's detail beneath a library bookplate and card index to the front paste down. The rest of the book is clean and tidy, with just a touch of darkening. A tag has been fixed to the divisional title at the beginning of vol. II. This is still firmly in place, but has caused a little tearing to the edge of the page. Bezange was a Benedictine Monk. [xxviii], 1-216; [ii], 1-464, [xxiv]. pp. The register is separate for each vol. so A-Dd4; A-Ppp3. Plein cuir contemporain.

Streit I, 172. Vieux Japon cat. 1096. Laures 340. Between 1656 and 1658, Bonichon wrote three tracts on the subject of the authority of Bishops in the ecclesiastical hierarchy (over the authority of clergy). A hot topic in France at the time apparently! The hierarchy stood with Bonichon against the clergy. [xxviii], 776, [2] pp. 250 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches). [xxviii], 776, [2] pp. 250 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches).
