First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617.

München / Monachii: Leysserius / Apud Cornelium Leysserium, 1631. 3rd Edition of this graphic account of Hell. München : Leysserius / Monachii : Apud Cornelium Leysserium
Engraved title and 9 full-page engravings in text depicting the torments of the damned in Hell by Philipp Sadeler.

Contemporary vellum with two brass and vellum clasps to close (one of the clasps is lacking). A quarter (2 cm) of the vellum to the spine is lost, with cracking to the spine edge. Some stains to boards. Ownership inscription on the front end paper and to the title page. Text is in Latin. Text block is clean and presentable. Some offsetting from the engraved plates. The plates appear to have been trimmed quite tightly but with minimal (if any) loss. This third edition seems to be a pocket edition, so that you are able to consult the torments at any time! The plates and typesetting seem to have been slightly re-worked from other (including later) editions by Leysserius. The dedication addresses the apostolic nuncio in Germany, bishop Pier Luigi Carafa (1581-1655), whose arms appear at foot of title. Eight torments are described, commented on and vividly illustrated with fine engravings, i.e. darkness, lamenting, hunger and thirst, stench, fire, excruciating remorse, ill company and desperation. The engraving related to lamenting shows an improbable music sheet with notes and lyrics ( Vae vae vae, ah ah ah ah, heu eheu aeternitas ) of the chant of sorrow sung by the damned.

Dünnh. II, 1399, 15.3 - "Immensely gruesome and drastic description of the torments of hell..." (Dünnhaupt on first edition in the same year). "Infernus" Together with "De Aeternitate" (1620) and "Caelum" (1635) were conceived as a trilogy. Jeremias Drexel S.J. (also known as Hieremias Drexelius or Drechsel) (1581–1638) was a Jesuit writer of devotional literature and a professor of the humanities and rhetoric. He served for 23 years as court preacher in Munich to Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria and his wife Elizabeth of Lorraine. He wrote numerous theological works.

    Conforms to OCLC: 317504955. [26], 491 pp. 95mm by 50mm (3¾ by 2 inches).

Internally the four volumes are in excellent condition. Clean and tidy, with very slight darkening only. Owner's monogrammed initials to each volume. A little light creasing to vol. 3. Overall, an excellent example. vi, [errata], 1-668., iv, 1-570., iv, 1-572., vii, 1-472. pp. Copac cites only two copies of the complete work, in the Cambridge Special Collections, and at Chetham's library, Manchester.

This copy belonged to Gilbert Buchanan, and has his initials in the front of the volumes. Buchanan was a Church of England clergyman, who was one of the contributors to the Advocate (and the Gentleman's Magazine) under the pen name "Clericus Surriensis". An Anglo-American, he had left America during the Revolutionary War, and had become a clergyman. He spent much time collating copies of the Book of Common Prayer with that held at the Tower (the "Authorized Standard"). He was eventually involved in publishing a corrected edition. The letter contributed by him here has been lightly annotated and corrected in his hand, and signed by him.

    Edition: First Edition

London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard: 1688. pamphlet, disbound. Title, text, adverts (for Chiswell). "A Clear Proof" although written as through from a Protestant, was in fact a Catholic work, trying to disprove the certainty of Protestantism. This work is a rebuttal of that work. Apart from a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together. John Williams (C1633–1709), was a Church of England minister, and later Bishop of Chichester (not to be confused with the Jesuit priest of the same period). Edition: First Edition

London: Tho. Basset, James Adamson, and Tho. Newborough: 1687. Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. The text shows some light staining in places and has some marginal ink notes, the first few leaves are partially detached at the top, everything else is well bound together. Wake, William (1657–1737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. He wrote many tracts opposing Catholicism.
William Clagett (1646–1688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II, when he was very anti-catholic. 1-40 pp. Wing C4390.
