London: Burns & Oates, 1911. A very nice copy of this First edition. Soggarth (derived from sagart), is an Irish word for a Priest. The blue cloth is clean and tidy, with no marking. The gilt is clean and bright. There is just a touch of bumping to the edges of the cloth. Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening / foxing to the page edges. Matthew Russell (1834-1912), was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, and Jesuit. He was the author of several books and collections of poetry - and was the founder and editor of "Catholic Ireland" Which became the literary journal "Irish Monthly" this "discovered" several prominent Irish authors, including Oscar Wilde.

Marbled boards. The exteriors of each volume is slightly dusty and bumped, but without significant stains or marks. Inside, the pages are moderately darkened, as printed on fairly cheap paper. Othewise in good, clean condition. The binding of volume one is a little shaken and loose but holding. Collation: 400, [8]., 405, [ii]., 437, [6]. pages. 18cm x 12cm. These volumes came from the St Birgittae de Sion (Bridgettine) monastery at Chudleigh in Devon. They were donated to the Abbey (and each has an inscription stating this) by the Rev. Benedict Williamson. Wiliamson was a prominent Catholic Architect, and supporter of the Bridgetinnes. He was ordained a priest in 1909 and was behind many of the finest early 20th Century Catholic Churches.

*Acta Apostolicae Sedis (Latin for "Acts of the Apostolic See"), often cited as AAS, is the official gazette of the Holy See, appearing about twelve times a year. It was established by Pope Pius X on 29 September 1908 with the decree Promulgandi Pontificias Constitutiones, and publication began in January 1909. It contains all the principal decrees, encyclical letters, decisions of Roman congregations, and notices of ecclesiastical appointments. The laws contained in it are to be considered promulgated when published, and effective three months from date of issue, unless a shorter or longer time is specified in the law

Paris / Lille: Société de Saint-Augustin, 1888. First edition. An unusual work telling the story of the Roman Catholic Missions to Africa. A large book. Soft covers bound in vellum with black printed titles and designs to the front and rear covers. The vellum is still and a little cracked with age, and there is a small hole to the spine edge. It seems a very luxurious way to bind a book in the late nineteenth century! The book block is separate from the vellum binding - but it may always have been more of a folder / portfolio as there is no sign of it having been attached to the inside of the vellum. The binding of the book block is fragile, and although it is just holding together, it is a little loose. The first page is a chromolithographed title, with gilt decoration in the style of a medieval work. The Jesuits monogram is to the centre of the design. There is a closed tear to the bottom edge. There are then 148 pages, bordered in red floral design. Full of illustrations. These mark the history of Christian missions in Africa from the flight of the holy family, to the late nineteenth century. Engravings (steels) in black and white and sepia throughout. Some in green colour. An attractive, rather fragile work, with light intermittent foxing. We can find only one other copy in its original binding. This was one of four works, dealing with Africa, Asia, America and Oceania, each complete in themselves. 38cm x 27cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 7635132. The Société de Saint-Augustin was in fact a publishing arm of Desclée, de Brouwer & Cie. This was a publishing house active in the late 19th century, known for producing Catholic literature and missionary works.

Couvertures souples reliées en vélin avec titres et motifs imprimés en noir sur les couvertures avant et arrière. Le vélin est encore et un peu craquelé par l'âge, et il y a un petit trou sur le bord du dos. Cela semble être une façon très luxueuse de relier un livre à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle ! Le corps d'ouvrage est séparé de la reliure en vélin - mais il se peut qu'il ait toujours été davantage un dossier ou un portefeuille, car il n'y a aucune trace d'attachement à l'intérieur du vélin. La reliure du corps d'ouvrage est fragile et, bien qu'elle tienne à peine, elle est un peu lâche. La première page est un titre chromo-lithographié, avec une décoration dorée dans le style d'un ouvrage médiéval. Le monogramme des Jésuites se trouve au centre du dessin. Il y a une déchirure fermée sur le bord inférieur. Il y a ensuite 148 pages, bordées d'un motif floral rouge. Les illustrations sont nombreuses. Celles-ci retracent l'histoire des missions chrétiennes en Afrique depuis la fuite de la sainte famille jusqu'à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle. Gravures (aciers) en noir et blanc et en sépia tout au long de l'ouvrage. Certaines sont en vert. Ouvrage attrayant, plutôt fragile, avec de légères rousseurs intermittentes. Nous n'avons trouvé qu'un seul autre exemplaire dans sa reliure d'origine. Il s'agit de l'un des quatre ouvrages traitant de l'Afrique, de l'Asie, de l'Amérique et de l'Océanie, chacun étant complet en soi. 38cm x 27cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 7635132. The original boards are clean and tidy, the new spine immaculate. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a touch of darkening to the pages. Neat owner's name to the front end paper. Overall a lovely copy. On the whole, the pages are cut / readable, but there are 3 or 4 gathers towards the rear of the book where the leaves are uncut. xv, [i], 1-744, [iv].

Paris: Lehuby: 1842. quarter tan leather with brown boards. gilt titles and decorations to the spine. Now covered in removable archival film. All edges gilt. Yellow end papers. Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. half title carries the approval of Cardinal Prince de Croy. Three engraved plates (frontis and two further) and an engraved title page. There is a little rubbing to the boards, but overall the spine and boards are in good bright shape. the front end paper has a nick to the top corner. The rest of this book is in good condition, slightly darkened to the page edges. The frontis plate is still holding well, but is in danger of becoming detached (slightly loose to the top half). Overall a sound copy. The book is telling the history of the missions to spread the Catholic faith. There are chapters on the Jesuit missions, missions to Constantinople and to Holland. Sections also on the religion of the Armenians, Ethiopians and the monastery at mount Sinai, the mission to Guyana etc: The Second half of the book is in two sections. The first dealing with the Mission to America to convert the Native Americans - (The "Savages" of Illinois and Louisiana). The second with the Mission to India (1701, 1709 etc.), and to Tibet. cuir quart de bronzage avec des conseils bruns. titres et décorations dorés au dos. Le reste de ce livre est en bon état, légèrement noirci sur les bords des pages. La plaque frontale tient toujours bien, mais risque de se détacher (légèrement lâche jusqu'à la moitié supérieure). Dans l'ensemble une copie sonore. Le livre raconte l'histoire des missions de diffusion de la foi catholique. Il y a des chapitres sur les missions jésuites, les missions à Constantinople et en Hollande. Sections également sur la religion des Arméniens, des Éthiopiens et du monastère du mont Sinaï, la mission en Guyane etc. : La seconde moitié du livre est en deux sections. Le premier traitant de la Mission en Amérique pour convertir les Amérindiens - (Les « Sauvages » de l'Illinois et de la Louisiane). La seconde avec la Mission en Inde (1701, 1709 etc.), et au Tibet. 288 pages.

An account of the author's visit to the Mission on Gabon. Beginning with his journey, and with a description of the topography, flora and fauna of the region. The second part is a lengthy description of the Fang or Pahouins (The indigenous Gabon peoples). Part three describes the African religions. Finally, part four describes the work of the Mission in the region. 228 pages. 24cm x 19cm. A nice copy of this work. The covers are clean with just a little edge wear and creasing. Internally clean and tidy with a touch of darkening to the pages.

The vellum and text are both clean and tidy, in this beautiful work. Written at Charlemagne's command, this is an account, in four books, of the Second Council of Nicaea (787). This council largely dealt with the heresy of Iconoclasm, and rather, permitted the adoration of Jesus, Mary, and Saints through the assistance of images - not through the adoration of the images themselves.. The sheets are loose (as issued) and folded irregularly. Printed in red and black with line drawings by Matisse. The ensemble is held in a stiff card slipcase. The book and covers are in excellent condition. The only flaw is a touch of foxing to the end papers. The slipcase is sound, but with some darkening and marking to the edges. A very nice example of this work. 82 numbered pages. 235 x 205 mm (9¼ x 8 inches). Première édition telle quelle. Édition limitée et numérotée (n° 991 d'un tirage inconnu). Couverture souple en carton sous papier cristal protecteur. Les feuillets sont en vrac (comme à l'origine) et pliés de manière irrégulière. Imprimé en rouge et noir avec des dessins au trait de Matisse. L'ensemble est présenté dans un étui en carton rigide. Le livre et les couvertures sont en excellent état. Le seul défaut est une légère trace de rousseur sur les pages de garde. L'étui est en bon état, mais présente un léger noircissement et des marques sur les bords. Un très bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage. 82 pages numérotées. 235 × 205 mm.
