There were a further two supplements issued in 1788. Original green publishers paper covers, with number to spine. (if this is a library number - there are no other library marks). NB. This book is entirely in Italian. The green paper is faded to the spine, and has a little nicking, with a couple of closed tears, and a little loss to the edge of the spine. The boards are still firm though. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little foxing / darkening to the pages only. Overall a nice copy of this uncommon first edition. Première édition. NA, 1839. HOWARD, Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk (1791-1856). An original volume relating to inheritance provisions for his children, 1841. Sixteen pages, with the remainder of the volume unused. It is headed: "Information connected with the Norfolk Family Settlement at the 31st May 1839." It notes annuities to the Earl of Surrey £10,000, Countess of Surrey £1,000 and detailed provisions for other members of the Duke's family, includingthe Earl and Countess of Arundel & Surrey, and their younger children Lord Edward (Fitzalan) Howard, Lord Bernard Fitzalan Howard, Lady Mary Howard and Lady Adeliza Howard, born in the early 19th century. There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839
his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral
Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.

Attractive engraved allegorical title. Contemporary inscription to title showing ownership of Nicolas Sartonio of Miltenberg. Clasps are missing, vellum is browned and stained, slightly rubbed but still presentable. Paper darkened in line with age, otherwise still in very good condition. First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617.

Marbled end papers. Attractive period owner's inscription to the first blank end paper. The book is clean and tidy, with just a touch of foxing spots and darkening. Originally published in 1710 as a single volume work, this new enlarged edition was issued in three parts. This is the First part only. [xxvi], 574 pages. 16cm x 9cm.

This is a devotional edition of L'Imitation de Jésus-Christ, in a Jesuit French translation by Jean Crasset de Gonnelieu, issued with added practical material for lay and clerical use in the first half of the 18th century. This is a translation of the original work, a Medieval Latin devotional classic, generally attributed to Thomas à Kempis. This combination of à Kempis's text, methodical "pratiques", and the bilingual Mass Ordinary made this a compact manual of Catholic piety, suitable both for retreat use and for everyday lay devotion in 18th century France. In full leather binding, with raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. Gilt title has worn away but is faintly visible. Boards are rubbed to corners and front board has a slight bow. This is the earliest copy of Gonelieu's version that we have been able to find.

Paris: Amédée Bédelet, 1866. First edition. A beautiful illustrated work for children. There is only one reference in WorldCat to a coloured copy. The rest contain black and white lithographs. Red cloth cover with black and gilt decoration and gilt titles to the front board and the spine. All edges gilt. The binding is somewhat darkened, and a little bumped Inside, the pages are generally fairly clean but with a few marks to the edges. The books has a frontispiece and 23 further full page colour lithographed plates by Leloir, engraved by Lemercier & Cie. (So a total of 24 plates). Complete. Each of the plates has a paper guard. These are quite chipped, and have some closed tears to them. The plates themselves are in very good condition. 52 pages. 24cm x 32cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 14698504. Only two library holdings. (Both in the USA). We cannot find any other coloured copies of this book available at the time of cataloguing. Text is in French.

Caen: Chenel, 1871. Original blue wraps, decorative titles and crest to the wraps - replicated to the title page. A couple of pages remain uncut. Overall in good condition, although there is staining and some (damp?) marking to the top edge of the covers. Very slight nicking to the edges of the wrapper. Inside generally clean and tidy throughout. Abbe Buguet was a Royalist, and traditionalist member of the church. He established a congregation to pray for the souls in Purgatory in Montligeon. He died in Rome in 1917. Enveloppements bleus originaux, titres décoratifs et écusson aux enveloppes - répliqués sur la page de titre. Quelques pages restent non coupées. Dans l'ensemble en bon état, bien qu'il y ait des taches et quelques marques (humidité ?) sur le bord supérieur des couvertures. Très légères entailles sur les bords de la cape. L'intérieur est généralement propre et bien rangé. L'abbé Buguet était un membre royaliste et traditionaliste de l'église. Copperplate engraving by Johann Sadeler from a series of 12 depictions from the life of Peter and Paul after drawings by Marten de Vos. Inscribed in the plate M(arten) de Vos invent(or). engraved area: 19 x 13 cm. Seet is 21cm x 15.5cm. Engraving is a good, clean impression, with a little darkening to the sheet. Two corners of the sheet have been cropped (not affecting plate). Held under a passepartout which is 40cm x 30cm. This is in good condition, but with a little marking to the front board. A nice copy. Johan Sadeler (1550-1600), was an Flemish engraver and illustrator, first of a famous family of engravers. He often collaborated with Marten de Vos.

Celui-ci est en bon état, mais avec une petite marque sur la première planche. Un bel exemplaire. Johan Sadeler (1550-1600) était un graveur et illustrateur flamand, premier d'une célèbre famille de graveurs. Il a souvent collaboré avec Marten de Vos.

Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticising more Liberal Catholics of the time. Couvertures originales en papier vert, avec le nom du propriétaire en haut de la couverture avant. A la Seine Impériale Timbre et 5 cent. Timbre acquitté sur la page de titre. Globalement en bon état. Il y a une petite marque sur les couvertures vertes, et des frottements sur le dos du papier, avec un petit manque. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé. Veuillot était un ultramontain français (celui qui place l'autorité du pape au-dessus de toute autorité séculière dans tous les domaines) et a beaucoup écrit en faveur de la papauté, et en particulier en critiquant les catholiques libéraux de l'époque. 63 [ii] pp.

The covers and the first couple of pages are quite soiled with what seems to be a combination of foxing and spider damage! The rest of the pamphlet has light foxing to it. Overall a not very good condition, but still readable work. 32 pp. Couvertures jaunes. Brochure contenant une monographie en français traitant du Pape et de la Liberté. A le timbre Impérial Timbre acquitté sur plusieurs pages. Les couvertures et les deux premières pages sont assez sales avec ce qui semble être une combinaison de rousseurs et de dégâts d'araignée ! Le reste de la brochure a de légères rousseurs. Dans l'ensemble, un travail pas très bon état, mais toujours lisible. 32 pages. 32 pp.

Paris: Chez H. Champion, 1908. First edition. A complete set of 81 loose plates with accompanying text, reproducing the medieval miniatures of Saint Denis. A nice association copy. This was presented to Father Jean-Vincent Scheil (1858–1940), a French Dominican priest and Assyriologist. An eminent archaeologist, he is credited as the discoverer of the Code of Hammurabi in Persia, found during excavations at Susa. He was a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur (1900); and Officier de la Légion d'honneur (1923). The gift inscription states that the work was given to him as homage by the Society for the history of Paris and Isle de France. This names him as a member of the Institute, and may have been as celebratory gift, as Scheil was elected as a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres of the Institut de France in December 1908. He seems to have then given the book to the Dominican library in Tours, as their library stamps are on the title page, and a couple of other pages. 63 pp. (text) + complete set of 81 loose plates in a hardback folder with blue cloth spine and paper covered boards replicating the title page. There is some rubbing and a touch of splitting to the portfolio edges. Title label to the spine is a little rubbed. Inside the pages are loose in folds. The end papers are a little darkened, but the rest of the work is clean and tidy. A nice copy. 290 by 190mm (11½ by 7½ inches).

Cet ouvrage a été offert au père Jean-Vincent Scheil (1858-1940), prêtre dominicain français et assyriologue. Archéologue éminent, on lui attribue la découverte du Code d'Hammurabi en Perse, mis au jour lors de fouilles à Suse. Il fut fait Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur (1900), puis Officier de la Légion d'honneur (1923). L'inscription figurant sur le cadeau indique que l'ouvrage lui a été offert en hommage par la Société d'histoire de Paris et de l'Île-de-France. Cela le désigne comme membre de l'Institut, et il s'agissait peut-être d'un cadeau de célébration, puisque Scheil fut élu membre de l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres de l'Institut de France en décembre 1908. Il semble avoir ensuite fait don de cet ouvrage à la bibliothèque des Dominicains de Tours, comme en témoignent les cachets de cette bibliothèque figurant sur la page de titre et sur quelques autres pages. 63 p. (texte) + série complète de 81 planches détachées dans un classeur à couverture rigide, avec un dos en toile bleue et des plats recouverts de papier reproduisant la page de titre. Small private library locator label to the top edge of the cover.* Title page is a repeat of the front cover. Many pages uncut. The pages are in good condition but moderately darkened. A judicious and finely argued study of Joan of Arc, in which the author weighs her mystical visions and martial achievements against the competing interpretations of rationalist scepticism and traditional Catholic hagiography. Drawing upon the original trial proceedings, contemporary eyewitness accounts of the relief of Orléans (1429), and the later rehabilitation documents of 1456, the work challenges theories of hysteria, epilepsy, and political manipulation. Particular emphasis is placed upon Joan's prophetic accuracy (notably the crowning of Charles VII); her remarkable leadership in the field despite illiteracy, and the theological acumen displayed during her trial at Rouen, all adduced as evidence of a character transcending a naturalist explanation. 88 pages. 23cm x 14cm. Taking its name from the two leading figures of the Bergevin family, Louis-Athanase Bergevin (1753-1832) and his son Louis-Catherine (1798-1876), were magistrates from Blois and major landowners in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt. The collection was dispersed at auction in Véndome in 2022.

S'appuyant sur les procès-verbaux originaux du procès, les témoignages contemporains de la libération d'Orléans (1429) et les documents de réhabilitation ultérieurs de 1456, l'ouvrage remet en cause les théories de l'hystérie, de l'épilepsie et de la manipulation politique. Complete copy of this rare pamphlet directed against the Jesuits. The text is a detailed commentary in eighteen "illuminations" relating to the parts of the print. The last page bears a finished printing "illuminated for the first time on January 15 and for the second on February 18, 1654". (The final page of the response is dated 20th March 1654). One of the aims of the work was to rally the non-specialist public to the cause of effective grace, an objective pursued by Pascal's Provinciales, for which the Enluminures thus served as a dress rehearsal. This text contains many references not found elsewhere on the Jansenist movement in the provinces.

La dernière page porte une impression terminée "enluminée pour la première fois le 15 janvier et pour la seconde le 18 février 1654". (La dernière page de la réplique est datée du 20 mars 1654). L'un des objectifs de l'ouvrage était de rallier le public non spécialisé à la cause de la grâce efficace, objectif poursuivi par les Provinciales de Pascal, dont les Enluminures ont ainsi servi de répétition générale. Ce texte contient de nombreuses références inédites sur le mouvement janséniste en province.
