Dublin: McGlashan & Gill, 1873. First Editions. The first three volumes (two and a half years) of this Catholic & Literary monthly magazine. The magazine was founded by Rev. Matthew Russell, S.J., (1834-1912), who was the editor for almost forty years. Green cloth, with gilt and black titles and design (a harp and title in Celtic style to the front board of each volume). Contains Catholic notes (lives of Saints etc.) fiction and poetry, including several pieces by Aubrey de Vere. Includes the serialized story "Jack Hazlitt" by Richard Baptist O'Brien, the Dean of Limerick. This was the companion volume to "Ailey Moore" and is an Irish American tale. From the library of Syon Abbey in Chudleigh, Devon, with their bookplate to each volume.
Overall in good condition with a touch of wear to the bindings. The binding to the front hinge has broken - so the front board could flap open at the first gather. This has now been repaired with archival tape but still fragile. A little foxing but still attractive and legible.

London: Burns and Lambert: 1854. First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.

Erdington, Warwickshire: St Mary's College, Oscott, 1885. First edition. A very nice copy of this Roman Catholic magazine. Blue cloth boards, with gilt titles and design. Comprising three issues of the magazine. 13 (misnumbered 12), 14 (June 1885), 15 (November 1885) with three photographic plates (portraits). The reprint / offprint contains two articles - one on "The Oscott Lodges" the other contains two poems by Peter Mowle (an Elizabethan Catholic) and a commentary.

The book is in sound condition. The blue cloth is a little faded and slightly rubbed. There is a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, the book is clean and tidy, with a little foxing only. Contemporary owner's gift inscription to the inside front board with a library sticker from the South Brent Syon Monastery.
St Mary's College (or Oscott as it is often know) is a seminary training Roman Catholic Clergy. It opened in 1794, and in 1805 ordained Francis Martyn - the first Roman Catholic priest wholly ordained in England since the Reformation. Since this time, it has been under the authority of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. the Chapel at Oscott was created by the eminent Catholic architect Augustus Welby Pugin, who also created the museum and altar (from 1837 he lived partly at Oscott). The college played an important part in the Catholic revival of the mid 19th Century.

Watford: Edgar Prestage: 1924. First edition. Cream paper covers with black and red titles to the front cover. Sewn binding. Yapped edges. The Foreword is written in English, the Elegies in Portuguese. A very nice copy of this work. The cream covers have a touch of handling only, with no significant markings. Very faint foxing to the rear panel. Internally clean and tidy throughout with the lightest of foxing. A limited edition of 250 copies (not numbered). 32 pages.
Prestage was the Camões Professor of Portuguese at the University of London. As he stated in the foreword: "The two elegies here reprinted have been selected to show him as a Catholic poet." He goes on to claim that Camões vision of the crucifixion "produces a picture of rare beauty." Camões (1524-80) was a Portuguese poet, primarily known for "The Lusiads".

Paris: Maison de la Bonne Presse. Four works bound together in one volume. In burgundy half morocco, with marbled boards and gilt titles to spine. Text in French. Illustrations by H. Rousseau. The books are undated, but their original soft covers have been retained and bound in. Boards lightly rubbed at edges, and pages are slightly age toned at the very edges. Top edge gilt. Pierre L'Ermite was the pseudonym of Father Edmond Louti, a parish priest who became a columnist for La Croix, and a successful and prolific novelist. These books were printed by the Assumptionist publication La Bonne Presse. 265 x 180 mm (10½ x 7 inches). Quatre ouvrages réunis en un seul volume. En demi maroquin bordeaux, à plats marbrés et titres dorés au dos. Texte en français. Illustrations de H. Rousseau. Les livres ne sont pas datés, mais leurs couvertures souples d'origine ont été conservées et reliées. Plats légèrement frottés sur les bords et pages légèrement vieillies sur les bords. Bord supérieur doré. Pierre L'Ermite était le pseudonyme du Père Edmond Louti, curé devenu chroniqueur à La Croix, et romancier à succès et prolifique.
