Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.

Red and black title page. Dedication page. Introductions and preface, text. A couple of attractive woodcuts. Complete with index, errata etc. All edges red. The vellum and text are both clean and tidy, in this beautiful work. Written at Charlemagne's command, this is an account, in four books, of the Second Council of Nicaea (787). This council largely dealt with the heresy of Iconoclasm, and rather, permitted the adoration of Jesus, Mary, and Saints through the assistance of images - not through the adoration of the images themselves.. Munchen: J. Derschler 'schen Buchbruderei, 1863. The Sacred rule for the Order of St. Bridget with the additions, the explanation of the Order & Rule and the Rule of St. Augustine. From the Library of the Syon Abbey Bridgetine convent. Original quarter calf with dark blue buckram boards. Titles to the spine. Label of Syon Abbey to the rear board. Text is in old fashioned Gothic German. The binding is a little rubbed with some loss to the surface layer of the leather. Binding is still firm and holding together well. The paper itself is of a fairly cheap quality, but is clean and tidy throughout. Overall a nice example of this very scarce item. No copies on COPAC, and only one in the KVK catalogue of German and Austrian holdings. 141, [x] pp.

Fulignio: Giovanni Tomassini Stamp. Vescovile, 1787. First Edition. This is the second volume only (of three) of Muzzarelli's major work on the use of Logic in Religion. There were a further two supplements issued in 1788. Original green publishers paper covers, with number to spine. (if this is a library number - there are no other library marks). NB. This book is entirely in Italian. The green paper is faded to the spine, and has a little nicking, with a couple of closed tears, and a little loss to the edge of the spine. The boards are still firm though. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little foxing / darkening to the pages only. Overall a nice copy of this uncommon first edition. Première édition. Il s'agit du deuxième volume seulement (sur trois) de l'ouvrage majeur de Muzzarelli sur l'utilisation de la logique dans la religion. Deux autres suppléments ont été publiés en 1788. The covers and the first couple of pages are quite soiled with what seems to be a combination of foxing and spider damage! The rest of the pamphlet has light foxing to it. His work for the Papacy was recognised by Pius IX, the subject of this work. There is a touch of darkening to the paper covers. Otherwise, a clean and tidy copy, inside and out. Caen: Chenel, 1871. Original blue wraps, decorative titles and crest to the wraps - replicated to the title page. A couple of pages remain uncut. Overall in good condition, although there is staining and some (damp?) marking to the top edge of the covers. Very slight nicking to the edges of the wrapper. Inside generally clean and tidy throughout. Abbe Buguet was a Royalist, and traditionalist member of the church. He established a congregation to pray for the souls in Purgatory in Montligeon.
