Paris: Chez Fabre, 1790. First edition. Two volumes. Full period calf. Gilt titles to labels to spine. Engraved frontispiece, 41 engraved plates, 5 folding plates and 15 woodcut illustrations. Subjects covered range from the initial purchase and setting up of a country estate, to advice on all aspects of country living: the keeping of chickens, geese, ducks, swans and pelicans, pheasants, peacocks; horses; beef and dairy cows, sheep and goats, pigs, beekeeping. The second part is devoted to advice on arable farming, what to grow and how; the management of forest and marshland; notes on the use of ornamental trees and finishes with hints on trading in the produce of the estate. The second volume is presented in two main parts: the first deals with all aspects of the garden (ornamental, kitchen, herb and fruit), the grape vine and other fruits used to produce drinks. The final part covers hunting and other country pursuits.
The binding is clean and presentable, if a little rubbed. The front hinges to both volumes are weak, with cracking to the hinges, but still holding on. Internally, both books are clean and tidy throughout. A lovely pair of volumes. The plates are in very nice condition. Paris: G. Masson. First edition, published July 1878. A popular account of Giffard's tethered balloon (installed for the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Its capacity was 50 people, who could travel to a height of 500 m. This was the first time that most people could see Paris from above, and it is estimated that 35,000 people took the flight. The balloon was lowered using a steam winch.) First published July 1878, reprints were required in September 1878, and in 1879. Original pale green soft covers with text to the front cover and a panorama of Paris from a balloon to the rear cover. The covers are a little foxed, and there is a small amount of lost to the base of the spine. This has been neatly repaired with archival tape. Frontis of a tethered ballon. Title page with pencilled date and inscription to the top. Internally, the book is clean and tidy, with a little foxing occasionally only. In addition to the frontis there are 2 double page engravings, and 13 single page engraved plates. Plus numerous other illustrations (some full page) 39 illustrations in total. 68 pages. A nice, original and complete copy of a scarce piece of ballooning history. 225 by 140mm (8¾ by 5½ inches).

Lacks title label to the spine. Illustrated with 15 engraved plates (mostly folding). (Complete). These are of microscopes or observations made through them. Internally mainly clean and tidy throughout, with no major damage. The plates are clean and good impressions. There is a little staining to the corner of some of the pages. This was the only French edition of Baker's "Microscope made easy" published in 1742. This French edition was expanded from the English edition, with a section on Polyps and an addition engraving (of microscopes). This was described by "Microbiology Today" as the first Microscopy laboratory manual. Baker was central in popularising microscopes in the eighteenth century. Translation by Father Esprit Pezenas. With b/w frontispiece (self portrait). Da Vinci's illustrations of the human form were often based on his study of dissected cadavers. This book contains many b/w reproductions of the artist's illustrations. A fascinating insight in to the struggles to study the anatomy of the body. Neat previous owner's name to ffep. Ex libris to front pastedown. Also owner's signature. The owner was Willem Henrik Emile (Emile) baron van der Borch van Verwolde (1910–1943). He was a Dutch resistance fighter and a bibliophile publisher. He had worked with A.A.M. Stols and Buckland Wright to publish quality items. During the war he was a member of Dutch Intelligence. Plain red canvas spine, front cover illustrated in colour, illustrations to every page, including a large double-page spread featuring an automobile chassis to the centre pages. 32 pages. Slight marking to the front board. The cover and pages are slightly darkened, particularly to the edges, but without any significant damage. It appears that the book has been re-sewn at some point, as the sewn binding is bright and clean to the central pages. A nice copy. 300 x 215 mm

The exterior is immaculate, inside there is a little foxing, and the oversized plates have a little edge wear to them. Nicolas Charles Seringe, first Teacher at the Academy of Bern then Professor of Botany and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Lyon wrote a work with the exact description, classification and history of flowers. He sought to avoid scientific language, and to arrange the objects in an easy order, through which one can easily learn about plants, how to propagate them and finally how to use them. Première édition. Deux volumes en un seul volume, parus en juillet et septembre 1818. Cuir rouge trois quarts récent avec titres dorés et plats rouges. Propre et bien rangé sans défauts majeurs. Nicolas Charles Seringe, d'abord Professeur à l'Académie de Berne puis Professeur de Botanique et membre de l'Académie Royale des Sciences et des Arts de Lyon a écrit un ouvrage avec la description exacte, la classification et l'histoire des fleurs. Il a cherché à éviter le langage scientifique et à ranger les objets dans un ordre facile, à travers lequel on peut facilement en apprendre davantage sur les plantes, comment les propager et enfin comment les utiliser.

Paris: Chez Laurent D'Houry, 1699. New edition. A scarce medical work. No copies available to purchase at time of cataloguing. FirstSearch records only one library copy in a Parisian Medical Library. Half leather with mottled boards. The leather spine is attractive, with gilt titles, a little rubbed and spotted. Cracked to hinges but holding well. The boards are somewhat rubbed, with part of the paper of the front board lacking. Surprisingly, the title was obviously written on the card below (Unless the papers was added later and then deteriorated. Internally clean and tidy throughout. vignettes to the two section headings. Printer's vignette to title page. This new edition was printed 10 years after the first edition, which was published by Hilaire Foucault with no author stated, although this has been attributed by some bibliographies to Pierre Betbeder. Brünn [Brno]: Joseph George Trassler, 1801. Volume 75 of this encyclopedia. Engraved frontis and 67 engraved plates to the rear, several folding. (So complete). This volume contains the entries from "Passion" to "Linen" and many of the plates have wonderful images of people expressing different moods in the style of Lavater. Hardback, in paper covered boards (age uncertain but likely mid 20th Century) Original label pasted to the spine. Clean and tidy. Internally clean and tidy throughout, a little creasing to the edges of the folding plates, but overall in excellent condition. Brünn, the second city of the Czech republic, was at this time, the capital of Moravia, and had a German speaking majority amongst its population. VIII, 800 pp + plates.

. Famous economic encyclopedia written by a total of six authors. The Berlin doctor Johann Georg Krünitz (1728-1796), who himself designed the first 73 volumes, gave the name to and initiated the ambitious undertaking. After his death, the work was continued first by the lawyer and composer Friedrich Jakob Floerke (1759-1799), and by his brother, the botanist Heinrich Gustav Floerke (1764-1835), volume 124-225 compiled by Johann Wilhelm David Korth (1783- 1861),

Paris: Masson et Cie. This work on orthopaedia, published in 1901, was part history of orthopaedics, and part medical corset catalogue. It stated that it included 98 gravures, but most of these are black and white vignettes. The work contained 11 full colour lithographic plates engraved by LARTAUD and printed by Geny-Gros. A scarce item, the best example seems to be that of the Wellcome Collection (K30262). They also show the same 11 plates. The plates are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of foxing spots here and there. The reverse shows where each has been removed from the original book. (Not by us of course). 11 pages. 270 by 190mm (10¾ by 7½ inches).

Cambridge (MA): Harvard University Press, 1948. First edition. A hardback in its original red cloth with gilt-stamped title to spine. Original red and white dust jacket. Includes frontis portrait of Edward Drummond Libbey plus several b/w plates and in text b/w illustrations and photographs. The dust jacket has some small areas of loss, and is very faded to spine - but the book itself is in a very good state. Now protected in clear Mylar wrap to help preserve the dust jacket. xvii + 398 pages. 245 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches).

This work encompasses not only the fine details of technology (directly responsible for the development of glassmaking, particularly from 1880 on), but goes into the metamorphosis of labour relationship, labour costs, factory management, output, price, and even into earnings and dividends paid. The leading part a handful of men in Toledo (Ohio) seem to have played in upscaling production is part of America's industrial history.
