Londini [London]: Excidebat Gulielmus Iones [William Jones], 1620. A very nice copy of this illustrated work of Euclid. Conforms to OCLC: 867116145. Here, FirstSearch states that this edition was edited by the mathematician Henry Briggs. Full leather binding, probably original boards, with a later leather spine and label with gilt decoration. Binding is in good, clean condition, with minimal bumping and wear. Slight splitting to the spine hinge. The end papers are from an earlier (16th Century) Latin work. Unusual to see pages used as end papers in this way. The binding has been made without inside covering to the boards. The front board holds the bookplate of Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart* Also has ownership marks of Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) and Edmund Clampin (?). Apart from the ownership marks, this work is mainly clean and tidy. There is a light damp mark to the top edge, but a very faint one. The work is written in two columns, with the Greek and Latin side by side. Despite the title, this work includes books 1-6 of Euclid's elements. Geometrical woodcut engravings throughout. A very nice clean copy. [2]-250-[2] pp. 285 by 185mm (11¼ by 7¼ inches). Henry Briggs was an English mathematician, whose main contribution was the simplification of logarithms and the algorithm for long division (which is still used). In 1619 he was appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, and produced this work in 1620. Irrelevant, but still interesting, is that he was the originator of the erroneous notion of California as an Island, which he expounded in a tract on the Northwest Passage printed in 1622, with a map showing the island, and oft re-printed after. *Sir Lucius O'Brien. (1731-1795). Irish baronet, Greek and Latin scholar, Member of Parliament and privy councillor.

The archive is held in a cloth covered clamshell box (37 x 24.5 cm). The box comprises: (1) A leather bound journal, with no titles, with brass lock and key (working). This contains the autobiography of HBJ, as dictated to his eldest daughter Millicent Mary Bence Jones during the last weeks of his life. She clearly wrote notes at the time, and transcribed it neatly in this journal. 61 unnumbered pages in black ink. 18.5 x 13 cm. (2) "Das Neue Testament." London: Samuel Bagster. A German pocket bible in full leather. Very good condition. Inscribed to HBJ from his affectionate sister in 1842 (year of his marriage). (3) 'Typescript' of the memoirs in black with additional explanations and additions in red. 30 numbered pages on lined writing paper. With a few handwritten Corrections. (These probably by his youngest son Archibald Bence, born 1856). 34 x 21 cm. (4) The final typescript manuscript sent to the printed by Archibald Bence Jones. 2 leaves in manuscript and 15 pages typed in red and black on lined paper with some corrections by hand. 32.5 x 21 cm. (5) The First Galley Proof. five leaves, printed to the recto only, with some manuscript corrections (probably by ABJ). Stapled. 59 x 17 cm. (6) First Galley Proof cut into sections and with hand written notes by ABJ. Stapled with a brown soft cover. 33 x 21 cm. 22 pages. (7) Final proof, edited by ABJ. 33 numbered paged printed on ten long sheets 78 x 17 cm. (8) Offprint from the Lancet, Oct. 7th 1922, with a brief anecdote about HBJ by his former clerk. (9) Three letters in reply to a request for information about HBJ from medical men, which gave additional information to add to his biography. All 1922. The condition of all the items in the archive is in very good to excellent condition. The only damage being some splitting to the paper cover of the galley proof.

32,5 x 21 cm. (5) The First Galley Proof. cinq feuilles, imprimées au recto seulement, avec quelques corrections manuscrites (probablement par ABJ). Agrafé. 59 x 17 cm.

Gaston Hoffmann (French, 1883-1977) worked as a painter, decorator, caricaturist, and illustrator in France and Quebec throughout the first half of the 20th century. He looked at contemporary events and topics in his work and explored the limits of his imagination. Hoffmann is known for his theatrical paintings and satirical prints. Hoffmann was born in Paris and studied there at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. After the war, he worked between 1918 and 1921 with his friend Charles Schneider, for whose glassworks he decorated vases with delicate motifs of plants, flowers and animals inspired by the Art Nouveau style. At this time, he also worked for the Sèvres porcelain factory, designed posters and painted two large murals in Quebec, where he taught at the academy between 1924 and 1926. He painted narrative genre scenes, often tinted humour, but also representations of wonderful underwater worlds populated by nereids and strange creatures. He has translated themes from literature, poetry and the Bible into emotional performances and addresses themes that, surprisingly, are still relevant today. He wrote educational books for primary schools, created humorous drawings, murals, altarpieces, illustrated books and caricatures, for example, of the pompous French judiciary. 330 by 430mm (13 by 17 inches).

In its heyday it produced much of the street furniture for Paris, including the lighting and entrances to metro stations, and a number of ironwork fountains. After the First World War, it produced many of the ironwork monuments and plaques to the fallen. It still exists today as Générale d'hydraulique et de Mécanique (GHM). 220 by 160mm (8¾ by 6¼ inches).
