Inside are 6 separate parts with paper covers and a design by Speybrouck to the front of each. Inside each are 6 anatomical plates, in two colours, with text in Dutch and French to each. A large work, the plates are each 48cm x 32.5cm. The portfolio is in good, sound condition, with strong black ties to the open cover. Black cloth spine. There is a touch of marking to the covers only. Each of the parts are in good, clean condition. The paper covers and the plates have only minor darkening. This seems to be a rare item. Conforms to WorldCat / FirstSearch OCLC: 14739641, which shows only three library holdings. All in the USA. There are no copies for sale at the time of Cataloguing, and auction records show only two sales. One incomplete, the other with a heavily damaged portfolio.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies & W. Creech, 1805. A nice edition of this work. Two volumes bound as one. Volume one is a fourth edition. Volume two is a second edition. Original half tan leather with marbled boards. The boards and leather are a little rubbed, and appear to have had some restoration. Burgundy leather label with gilt titles. A little rubbing to the titles. Inside, the work bears the bookplate of Edward William Harcourt (1825-1891), Conservative Member of Parliament, naturalist and author of several books. Some foxing to the end papers. The rest of the book is clean and tidy throughout. The two volumes contain fresh prefaces and errata, and an appendix of 56 pages which deals with issues in admitting fever patients to hospitals. Currie was the first doctor to use cold water in the treatment of fever. He favoured using sea water and showered patients with colder and colder water in an attempt to subdue fever. Currie a été le premier médecin à utiliser l'eau froide dans le traitement de la fièvre. Il privilégiait l'eau de mer et aspergeait les patients d'eau de plus en plus froide pour tenter d'apaiser la fièvre. Toulouse: J.M. Douladoure, 1820. A nice copy of this first edition. Signed by the author opposite the title page, with a dedication to a Doctor Lallemand. A treatise on the history and nature of hospitals / hospitality in ancient times. The binding is an attractive half leather with marbled boards. gilt decoration to the spine with a burgundy label. Six panels to the spine. There is a loss of half a panel of the spine leather. Slight bumping and rubbing to the binding otherwise. Slight weakening to the front hinge. Marbled end papers. The title page has had almost half of it cut out, but has been replaced professionally with similar paper at a later date (see photograph). There is also a location stamp to the top of the title page. To the next page (introduction) there is a small circular stamp. Somewhat obscured and un identifiable. This is repeated a couple of times throughout the book. Otherwise clean and tidy throughout the work, with just a touch of foxing. Frizac (1772-1865) was a native of Toulouse and surgeon. From 1808 to 1814 he was head of the secretariat of the Grand Duchy of Florence, in charge of the mendicity department. Louis XVIII appointed him a counseiller to the Prefecture of Toulouse. Ce cachet se répète plusieurs fois dans l'ouvrage. Autrement, l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec juste un peu de rousseur. Frizac (1772-1865) était originaire de Toulouse et chirurgien. De 1808 à 1814, il fut chef du secrétariat du grand-duché de Florence, chargé du service de la mendicité. Louis XVIII le nomme conseiller à la préfecture de Toulouse. Paris: Jean Jost, 1632. A catalogue of medicines by Guibert, produced as part of his work "L'Apoticaire Charitable". Disbound. This copy begins at the title page. Pagination is 130-216. Complete in itself. After a brief introduction, the work is essentially a list of medicines with a little text about each one. First gather is detached, the rest of the text block holding together. Held in a green paper cover. The pages are slightly darkened, but clean. 140 x 80 mm (5½ x 3¼ inches).

Lacks title label to the spine. Illustrated with 15 engraved plates (mostly folding). (Complete). These are of microscopes or observations made through them. Internally mainly clean and tidy throughout, with no major damage. The plates are clean and good impressions. There is a little staining to the corner of some of the pages. This was the only French edition of Baker's "Microscope made easy" published in 1742. This French edition was expanded from the English edition, with a section on Polyps and an addition engraving (of microscopes). This was described by "Microbiology Today" as the first Microscopy laboratory manual. Baker was central in popularising microscopes in the eighteenth century. Translation by Father Esprit Pezenas. The frontispiece shows a beautiful engraving of the Roman baths. A second, folding plate (opposite page 52) showing water containers. Largely dedicated to the baths and the conservation of heat among the ancients, a part also dedicated to Mercuriale. In excellent condition. Contemporary half leather over mottled boards. Leather is in good, slightly rubbed condition. Gilt decoration to the spine. Label has worn away. Inside the book is in very good condition. Darkening / offsetting on the end papers. London: Darton and Harvey, 1805. First Edition. Two volumes bound as one. With titles, two engraved titles and 84 copper plate engravings (complete). The plates with decorative animal illustrations by J. Tookey after J. Ibbetson. Half calf binding with brown boards. The boards are somewhat stained. The binding is rubbed to the corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles to the spine are still attractive though. Has the ownership signature of G. Goldney, Buckfield to the front end paper. Small bookshop stamp of Paul A Struck of New York to the inside board. Some of the pages and plates have light water staining (a couple there is more distinct staining), and there is light foxing in places. Pages a touch darkened. Overall, a nice copy though. Unpaginated. Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), was a Yorkshire painter noted for his rural scenes and depictions of animals. This is the first printing of an important work of natural history, which was re-printed in 1848/9. 330 by 260mm (13 by 10¼ inches).

This copy is in uncut sheets, and appears to have never been bound up. Pages (particularly the first and last page) are rather darkened, and the edges are a little bumped. Still bumped and with some staining to them. Text in Latin. 230 by 190mm (9 by 7½ inches). No copies available to purchase at the time of cataloguing. Conforms to OCLC: 1078445286. Only two library holdings (Both in Denmark!).

Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Apud Georgium Gallet, 1696. A lovely copy of this first edition. Sadly, lacks the additional engraved title page (frontispiece)*. But has all seven of the plates as called for. Full contemporary leather binding with gilt decoration and label to the spine. Attractive binding. A little rubbing but overall in very good condition. The pages and plates are in excellent, good, clean condition. The title (printed in red and black with a vignette) has an ownership signature for Dr Menard dated 1700. There are a small number of neat inked marginalia in the same hand throughout the book. Text in Latin.

John Case (c. 1660–1700) was an English astrologer and quack doctor. "Although there is no evidence that Case ever acquired a medical qualification, he nonetheless took up the title of Doctor and set up a practice in Ludgate selling medications to the unsuspecting, unquestioning public. The term quack in the Middle Ages meant "shouting", as these charlatans used to sell their wares at markets by shouting to gain attention. Case advertised profusely his remedies over decades and the elevated price of his elixirs and remedies hints at a steady and affluent clientele, many of whom were seeking a cure for the clap. Despite predicting the end of the world, owning an illusionist apparatus to scare people with images of their departed friends and selling unproven medicines, he rose briefly to fame thanks to his Compendium Anatomicum. In here Case defended the opinion of William Harvey's 1651 De Generatione Animalium (On the generation of animals), where the renowned physician and scientist established several theories that would set the stage for modern embryology and addressed many embryological issues including conception, embryogenesis, and spontaneous generation. Case's work was so superior to his other books that some doubted his authorship." (from Gonville & Caius, Cambs. Online archive).

*There seems some confusion about collation, and the lack of the engraved title seems common. The Wellcome foundation copy also lacks this. As do several old auction offerings (eg. Sothebys 1984). However other copies offered at auction have had this engraved title. [Wellcome II, 308; Russell 121 appears to include the frontispiece in the number of plates given] [XII], 192, [ii]. pages.

John Case (c. 1660-1700) était un astrologue et un médecin charlatan anglais. A few historiated initials and small vignettes throughout each volume. Dedication to the front of volume one. All edges gilt. Internally clean and tidy with a little darkening only. Text in Greek and Latin. Of particular interest in this copy is the ownership history. To the front of each volume is the paper ex libris of Syston Park, the celebrated library of Sir John Thorold. This library was largely dispersed by Sothebys in 1884 (although this copy does not appear to have been in that sale). The is also the small leather label of Huth Library "Ex Musaeo Huthii". This library was begun by Henry Huth (1815-1878) and continued by his son Alfred H. Huth. The Library was dispersed by Sotheby's in a number of sales between 1911 and 1920. Here, FirstSearch states that this edition was edited by the mathematician Henry Briggs. Full leather binding, probably original boards, with a later leather spine and label with gilt decoration. Binding is in good, clean condition, with minimal bumping and wear. Slight splitting to the spine hinge. The end papers are from an earlier (16th Century) Latin work. Unusual to see pages used as end papers in this way. The binding has been made without inside covering to the boards. The front board holds the bookplate of Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart* Also has ownership marks of Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) and Edmund Clampin (?). Apart from the ownership marks, this work is mainly clean and tidy. There is a light damp mark to the top edge, but a very faint one. The work is written in two columns, with the Greek and Latin side by side. Despite the title, this work includes books 1-6 of Euclid's elements. Geometrical woodcut engravings throughout. A very nice clean copy. [2]-250-[2] pp. 285 by 185mm (11¼ by 7¼ inches). Henry Briggs was an English mathematician, whose main contribution was the simplification of logarithms and the algorithm for long division (which is still used). In 1619 he was appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, and produced this work in 1620. Irrelevant, but still interesting, is that he was the originator of the erroneous notion of California as an Island, which he expounded in a tract on the Northwest Passage printed in 1622, with a map showing the island, and oft re-printed after. *Sir Lucius O'Brien. Reliure en plein cuir, probablement des planches d'origine, avec un dos et une étiquette en cuir plus tardifs avec une décoration dorée. La reliure est en bon état, propre, avec un minimum de bosses et d'usure. La charnière du dos est légèrement fendue. Les pages de garde proviennent d'un ouvrage latin antérieur (XVIe siècle). Il est inhabituel de voir des pages utilisées de cette manière comme feuilles de garde. La reliure a été réalisée sans couverture intérieure sur les planches. Le premier plat porte l'ex-libris de Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart*, ainsi que les marques de propriété de Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) et Edmund Clampin ( ?). Hormis les marques de propriété, cet ouvrage est généralement propre et bien rangé. Il y a une légère marque d'humidité sur le bord supérieur, mais elle est très légère. Plain red canvas spine, front cover illustrated in colour, illustrations to every page, including a large double-page spread featuring an automobile chassis to the centre pages. 32 pages. Slight marking to the front board. The cover and pages are slightly darkened, particularly to the edges, but without any significant damage. It appears that the book has been re-sewn at some point, as the sewn binding is bright and clean to the central pages. A nice copy. 300 x 215 mm

Its capacity was 50 people, who could travel to a height of 500 m. This was the first time that most people could see Paris from above, and it is estimated that 35,000 people took the flight. The balloon was lowered using a steam winch.) First published July 1878, reprints were required in September 1878, and in 1879. Original pale green soft covers with text to the front cover and a panorama of Paris from a balloon to the rear cover. The covers are a little foxed, and there is a small amount of lost to the base of the spine. This has been neatly repaired with archival tape. Frontis of a tethered ballon. Title page with pencilled date and inscription to the top. Internally, the book is clean and tidy, with a little foxing occasionally only. In addition to the frontis there are 2 double page engravings, and 13 single page engraved plates. Plus numerous other illustrations (some full page) 39 illustrations in total. 68 pages. A nice, original and complete copy of a scarce piece of ballooning history. 225 by 140mm (8¾ by 5½ inches).
