    A collection of four deeds and legal documents connected with the Paddington Estate, London.

    1903. Four documents concerned with the Paddington Estate in West London. The monks of Westminster had land in Paddington from the 11th Century. After the Reformation, these rested with the Bishop of London. From the late 19th Century, these were gradually sold of through holding companies, the last being sold in the 1980's. These documents comprise: July 1903 - A counterpart licence for 14 Cleveland Square with permissions to renovations and changes to the property. 4 pages. April 1913 - A counterpart licence to add a garage for private motor cars to 7 Chilworth Mews. 3 pages and a large drawn handcoloured architectural plan of the front of the building and ground floor (on glassine).     Condition: The binding is sound, but slightly loose, with the result that one of the gathers has become detached (but still present). Burgundy boards have a little rubbing and discolouration, mainly to the rear board, but mainly sound. Internally clean throughout. Inscription by Batsford and one other.

There are two further loose photographs, one of which is a little tatty to the edges. The report is signed in fountain pen by the author. There is also a compliments letter loosely enclosed. Each volume has an engraved title page with vignette. Vol. 1 has 100 engraved views on 50 plates (good quality art paper). Vol. 2. has 102 views on 51 plates. Opposite each is a text sheet with text in English. To the verso of this is the same description in French. The edges of each plate have the original small stab marks to them. Boards are in excellent condition, with just a touch of bumping. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a little foxing to some pages. There is a weakening to the front hinge of volume 1. Now reinforced with archival tape. Augustus Charles Pugin (1762–1832) was an Anglo-French artist, architectural draughtsman, and writer on medieval architecture. He was the father of Augustus Welby Pugin, the celebrated Catholic architect. 300 by 230mm (11¾ by 9 inches). Les deux vol. imprimé en 1831. Donc vol. 1 est une deuxième édition, et le vol. 2 une première édition. Percaline bleu-vert originale avec des titres dorés simples au dos. Chaque volume a une page de titre gravée avec vignette. Vol. 1 comporte 100 vues gravées sur 50 planches (papier d'art de bonne qualité). Vol. 2. a 102 vues sur 51 planches. En face de chacun se trouve une feuille de texte avec du texte en anglais. Augustus Charles Pugin (1762-1832) était un artiste anglo-français, dessinateur d'architecture et écrivain sur l'architecture médiévale. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical (such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes.) Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect (text in French) has one or more illustrations following. Many (but not all) of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact, there are a few more, but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened, and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge, and is darkened, and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm (13 x 10 inches).

Small stamp shows that this volume belonged to the Assay office of Birmingham. With both an original signed sketch on glassine, and a simple pencil drawing. Enclosed in a light blue portfolio, and inside its original slipcase. Unpaginated. Laure Malcles-Masereel was an accomplished illustrator in her own right, previous to becoming Frans Masereel's second wife. Slipcase has some sun fading, and light wear. Spine of the portfolio has sun fading. Internally the lithographs and original artwork are all in a very good condition. 350 x 255…
