    Chinese mountain landscape view

China: N.P, C1950. First edition / original painting. A classic shanshui (山水) landscape with excellent spatial depth. The artists name and seal are to the top right. 冯有年 = Féng Yǒunián — a given name meaning "prosperous years" or "longevity." There is a further seal (chop), to the middle left of the painting. This is probably the artist's seal of authenticity. The artist uses all three traditional planes: Misty distant mountains fading on the right; a large dominant central mountain mass dense with pine forests; and a detailed foreground of rocks, a gnarled pine tree, and a stream. Crucially, there's a small pavilion tucked into the right mid-ground. The pavillion is a common Daoist motif signalling that the landscape…

Crucially, there's a small pavilion tucked into the right mid-ground. The pavillion is a common Daoist motif signalling that the landscape is a place of retreat and contemplation, not just scenery. A beautiful example of mid twentieth century Shanshui art. Skillfully exectuted. No significant marking. Held under a gilt edged passe partout, in a wooden frame under glass. The visible part of the painting is 29cm x 36cm. The frame itself is 45cm x 51.5cm,

First edition. A lovely suite of 50 illustrations by Barbedor. Limited to 200 copies. The series was apparently numbered and signed. This copy is not numbered, and not signed to the colophon, but there is a warm inscription by the artist to a friend on the title page. We assume that this is an out of series copy from the artist's own stock. In addition, we are including a sheet with two sanguine print illustrations by Barbedor on heavy grey art paper. Curiously, although the title is fifty designs, we counted 52 in the portfolio, but two are perhaps vignettes. One of the designs is printed in red and black, whilst every other illustration is in black only. The collection is in excellent condition. Held in a blue card portfolio with white titles. This is somewhat rubbed and with some splitting to the folds. Madeleine Barbedor (1905 - 2001) was a French designer and illustrator. She based herself in the medieval suburb of Nice, Haut de Cagnes, where many artists have spent time. Her art utilised symbolism and romanticism to a large extent. Her drawings portrayed daily life in Haut de Cagnes through the lens of mythological scenes. She is best know for her illustrations of Henry de Montherlant's work. A rare item, there are no other copies for sale at the time of cataloguing, and no auction records for this item. Not in WorldCat / OCLC. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches).

Absent de WorldCat / OCLC. 320 by 250mm.

This has been professionally framed, and so is sealed to the edges. As a result we haven't been able to examine the page outside of the mount. Sketch is 27cm x 19.5cm. Mount is 34.5cm x 27cm.

The image shows a man in military uniform, wearing a bicorne hat with the word "conseil" on it. He is looking sceptically over his shoulder where an image shows "interieur" and a purse (?) over the words "Seance ou Zjaoul" (?) To the bottom is the line "Effet de la formation du Nouveau cabinet sur le Conseil communal ou notre ville." This is probably referring to the 1857 Belgian general election which was held on 10 December 1857 and was the first full general election since 1848. It was called by royal order dissolving the Chamber of Representatives. Before the election, Liberals held a majority in the Senate, and Catholics held a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. The election resulted in a victory for the Liberal Party, which won 70 out of 108 seats in the Chamber of Representatives, gaining a majority in both chambers of parliament. Charles Rogier became both the premier and the Interior minister (perhaps referenced with the word "Interieur" to the top).

Jules Renard (1833-1926), known by the pseudonym Draner, was a Belgian painter, illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege, he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92.

They state "The Anatomical Museum -- Oh, come on! What's gotten into him? - My dear Chet, we're wrong to come here and learn about dinner?"

He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92. »

As Ballett und Pantomime was produced not long after the end of WW1, Schnackenberg attracted attention with his creations. His figures and drawings make it clear that in dance and pantomime, the people felt they could reclaim the right to rejoice in the beauty of the body, in animated movement, in colour, in costume, in performance. Tipped on images size: 285 x 230 mm (11¼ x 9 inches). Whole sheet, including margins: 510 x 390 mm (20 x 15¼ inches). Sold under passe partout with colour of image picked out in detail to the edge. Total size of Passe Partout 525mm xx 400mm Walter Schnackenberg Édition limitée / numérotée.
