Internally in excellent, clean condition throughout. Each volume holds the bookplate of Sir William J. Pope. (b. 1870). He was a chemist and fellow of the Royal Society. During the First World War he served of the Board of Invention and Research at the Admiralty. One of his contributions was methods of preparing and distributing mustard gas! There is a little scattered foxing in places, but mostly fairly light. Photographic plates have been pasted onto cardboard. The boards are slightly loose, and the binding a little cracked to the hinges, but still holding well. A little rubbing to the spine and edges, with some loss, but otherwise in clean condition. Marbled page edges. Internally clean and tidy with a little foxing only. Frere's complete works were published in 1871, with a memoir by his nephews W.E. and Sir Henry Bartie frere. This is the second enlarged edition. John Hookham Frere (1769-1846) was an English diplomat and author. His reputation now largely rests on his translations of Aristophanes. His "prospectus and specimen", a mock Arthurian poem, was used extensively by Byron in "Don Juan." Bookplate and signature of Reginald Heber Macaulay from his Eton master Francis St John Thackeray on the occasion of his leaving Eton in 1878. Macaulay (1858-1937) was an amateur English footballer who won the FA cup for the Old Etonians in 1882 and made an appearance for England in 1881. viii, 354., viii, 426., 436. pages. 22cm x 14cm.

London: George Allen, 1897. A very nice copy of the first edition thus. Six volumes. Edited by Thomas J. Wise and with the fabulous arts and crafts illustrations of Walter Crane. One of 1000 unnumbered copies on handmade paper printed by Charles Whittingham & Co. at the Chiswick Press. The original soft covers of the parts have been retained and bound in to the rear. Recently repaired / re-spined in red leather with the original red leather boards. Some of the boards have some darkening / staining, but overall in very attractive condition. Internally the books are sound, but slightly darkened to the edges. Band Λ-Ω published 1806. Three quarter brown leather with mottled boards. The boards are a little rubbed. Spines have raised bands, and are in good shape, but have no sign there was ever a title to them. Inside the books have some contemporary ink names and notes to front blanks, plus some sealing wax residue, and a small stamp (perhaps from a library) that has been crossed through. Some darkening to the boards, particularly to the spine. Small tear to the rear board has been repaired. Front hinge is rather weak, and has been reinforced with archival tape. End paper and inside boards have ink inscriptions by former owners. The binding is particularly weak to the second leaf, where is it holding, but quite split. Attractive engraved title page as frontis, followed by title with vignette portrait. Full page engraved portrait facing page 1. Attractive engravings and vignettes throughout the work. The engraved title is repeated (along with regular title) to each of the volumes. Generally in good clean condition, with a little darkening to the pages and light pencil marks now and again. The end of volume 3 is rather more darkened. [vi], 1-289.,[iv], 1-440., [vi], 1-334. [32] pages. Contents are Part I: Heroine letters, Love poems, Free art, Love benefit. Amstelaedami [Amsterdam]: Apud Henricum Wetstenium [Wetstein], 1684. Contemporary (or near) full leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine. Second edition (after the first Antwerp edition of 1608). A note to the front end paper in English states that this is a large paper copy. There are certainly good margins, and the Worldcat listings seem to suggest a book of 17cm. Ours is 21cm. So this is probably correct. Engraved title page with the bust of Horace by Lairesse. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette. Dedication leaves in Latin. Forward (In Dutch) by Antoni Jansen van TerGoss. The emblems themselves all on the recto pages, with Dutch text beneath and Latin, German and French facing each engraving. [xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 engraved plates (complete). Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 905297377. 210 by 115mm (8¼ by 4½ inches).

Condition: The binding is in slightly rubbed condition. A little bumping to the corners. Cracking to the front hinge. The title label is largely lost. Still holding well and an attractive binding. The front end paper is somewhat weak. The rear end paper has a small hole, and a red ink stain to it. There is also an ink inscription in Latin stating that the book was given to the owner by his good friend Coenraad van Beuningen. (1622-1693). He was the Dutch Republic's most experienced diplomat, burgomaster of Amsterdam, and from 1681 a Dutch East India Company director. He probably was bipolar, becoming unstable after the loss of his fortune in 1688. The pages of the work itself are overall in good, clean condition. There is a touch of darkening, and some small old repairs to the pages. There are a few closed tears and a couple of areas of small loss. None of these issues affect text or plates. One page has annotations which add verses from Virgil and Juvenal.

A scarce work by Otto Van Veen depicting moral scenes, memento mori, teachings on nature and the destiny of man. plates were cut by C. Boel, C. Galle and P. de Jode. Otto van Veen, also known by his Latinized names Otto Venius or Octavius Vaenius (1556-1629), was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, He also designed several emblem books, and was for several years the teacher of Rubens. His role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus), was influential on the young Rubens, who would take on that role himself. (Wikipedia).

Il y a certainement de bonnes marges, et les listes de Worldcat semblent suggérer un livre de 17 cm. Le nôtre mesure 21 cm. État de conservation : La reliure est légèrement frottée. Les coins sont un peu abîmés. La charnière avant est fissurée. L'étiquette de titre est en grande partie perdue. L'ouvrage tient encore bien et constitue une reliure attrayante. Le papier de garde avant est quelque peu affaibli. Le papier de garde arrière présente un petit trou et une tache d'encre rouge. Il y a également une inscription à l'encre latine indiquant que le livre a été donné au propriétaire par son bon ami Coenraad van Beuningen. (1622-1693). Il fut le diplomate le plus expérimenté de la République néerlandaise, bourgmestre d'Amsterdam et, à partir de 1681, directeur de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales. Il était probablement bipolaire, devenant instable après la perte de sa fortune en 1688. Les pages de l'ouvrage lui-même sont dans l'ensemble en bon état. Il y a un peu de noircissement et quelques petites réparations anciennes sur les pages. Il y a quelques déchirures fermées et quelques petites pertes. Aucun de ces problèmes n'affecte le texte ou les planches. Une page comporte des annotations qui ajoutent des vers de Virgile et de Juvénal.

Un ouvrage rare d'Otto Van Veen représentant des scènes morales, des memento mori, des enseignements sur la nature et le destin de l'homme. Les planches ont été découpées par C. Boel, C. Galle et P. de Jode. Otto van Veen, également connu sous ses noms latinisés Otto Venius ou Octavius Vaenius (1556-1629), était un peintre, dessinateur et humaniste actif principalement à Anvers et à Bruxelles à la fin du XVIe siècle et au début du XVIIe siècle. Il est connu pour ses peintures de scènes religieuses et mythologiques, ses allégories et ses portraits. Il a également conçu plusieurs livres d'emblèmes et a été pendant plusieurs années le professeur de Rubens. There was a translation printed in Saumur by Jean Lesnier at the same time of this edition. It received its privilege du Roy in December 1665. Original vellum binding with the title in ink to the spine. Vellum, is somewhat darkened. Binding is holding well. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little darkening only. Tanneguy Le Fèvre (1615-1672) was a philologist and translator. This work is viewed as one of his masterpieces. (7) ff. 209 pp. 145 by 80mm (5¾ by 3¼ inches). Here, FirstSearch states that this edition was edited by the mathematician Henry Briggs. Full leather binding, probably original boards, with a later leather spine and label with gilt decoration. Binding is in good, clean condition, with minimal bumping and wear. Slight splitting to the spine hinge. The end papers are from an earlier (16th Century) Latin work. Unusual to see pages used as end papers in this way. The binding has been made without inside covering to the boards. The front board holds the bookplate of Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart* Also has ownership marks of Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) and Edmund Clampin (?). Apart from the ownership marks, this work is mainly clean and tidy. There is a light damp mark to the top edge, but a very faint one. The work is written in two columns, with the Greek and Latin side by side. Despite the title, this work includes books 1-6 of Euclid's elements. Geometrical woodcut engravings throughout. Henry Briggs was an English mathematician, whose main contribution was the simplification of logarithms and the algorithm for long division (which is still used). In 1619 he was appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, and produced this work in 1620. Irrelevant, but still interesting, is that he was the originator of the erroneous notion of California as an Island, which he expounded in a tract on the Northwest Passage printed in 1622, with a map showing the island, and oft re-printed after. *Sir Lucius O'Brien. La reliure est en bon état, propre, avec un minimum de bosses et d'usure. La charnière du dos est légèrement fendue. Les pages de garde proviennent d'un ouvrage latin antérieur (XVIe siècle). Il est inhabituel de voir des pages utilisées de cette manière comme feuilles de garde. La reliure a été réalisée sans couverture intérieure sur les planches. Le premier plat porte l'ex-libris de Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart*, ainsi que les marques de propriété de Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) et Edmund Clampin ( ?). Front board to volume two is cracked to the hinge, but still holding in place. Handled but attractive. Frontis portrait to volume one. (clean and tidy) The title page tp volume one is a little darkened with a corner mark, otherwise the text block is in excellent condition. Volume two is still in very good condition, but with a few foxing spots. A little worm damage to the last few pages of volume 2. with slight impact upon text. Unpaginated quarto edition. Also enclosed are a copy of Canon John Willis's address to the Johnson Society "Dr Johnson and his English Dictionary" 1948 24pp. And an advertising postcard from Scolar Press for a facsimile of the Journey to the Western Isles. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

Lovely contemporary half leather binding with green leather to spine and gilt decoration. A little rubbing and edgewear to the spine. Black cloth to boards. There is light to moderate foxing throughout the book. The work contains: Frontis. Title page (In English - dated 1849 and stating that this issue is for the American Market); (1) Hamlet decorated title & plates (16); Macbeth (12); Romeo & Juliet (12); King Lear (12); The Tempest (12); Othello (12); The Merry Wives of Windsor (12); Henry IV part I & II (12). There is then a title page in German and a Title in English (both dated 1847). Then XCV pages in two columns giving the explanation of the plates in both English and German. The preface to the explanation, states that this Complete edition, has used the plate "Shakspeare's Apotheosis" as a Frontis. This was previously Plate one to each of the separate parts. As a result, the plates are numbered starting with plate 2 for each work. This copy is clearly the 1847 first complete edition, with an additional English title for the American market.
