Paris: 1889. A complete set of Philippe Norwins' political satire postcards, mocking leading celebrities of the day. Each numbered and signed in the plate. Condition excellent for all twelve, with just a touch of darkening. The satire was harsh. Includes satires of Sarah Bernhardt & Clemenceau. Cards 6-12 state "6e Serie" to them - but the set is complete. Each card is 100 by 150mm (4 by 6 inches). The paper covers to the spines have degraded and are no longer present. However the bindings are firm and strong. Some darkening / staining and light bumping to the boards. The boards are slightly loose to the text block (due to lack of spine cover). Internally clean throughout, but with intermittent foxing. Many pages uncut.

Slight darkening of the wartime economy pages. Gift inscription is neatly written to the front end paper. (Nb. Inscription is from the Tata Institute of Social Science - not Kumarappa himself). Edwina Mountbatten, Countess of Burma, was involved in Social Service and the St John's Ambulance during the Second World War, and remained very involved for the rest of her life. Her husband was the last Viceroy of India, and orchestrated the partition. This book was given to her about a month after partition. Jagdisan Mohandas Kumarappa (1886–1957) was an erudite scholar and a passionate social reformer. He championed the cause of social work education and criminology as the director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This was the first school of Social Work in Asia, and remains India's top school of Social work. 160 pages. 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches).

160 pages. 240 x 170 mm

There is moderate rubbing to the edges of the spine with some loss. Bumping to the green boards - particularly to the front board. Inside the book is in excellent condition. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board. Possibly the General himself or one of his family- as it is A Saû Girardin. To the title page, it is hand written in ink "Par B Ducos & Saû de Girardin". As a frontis, is a large folding map by P.F. Tardieu of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with images of ships and numbers of each invasion. Beautifully hand coloured. A touch of edge wear to the base of the map. Map size: Map size is 47.5 x 67 cm
Text block is clean and tidy, with just a touch of foxing. [4], 43, [1] pp. 270 x 220 mm (10¾ x 8¾ inches). Note: Although this work is published anonymously - it is well known to have been written by Girardin. We can find no trace of an involvement by a B. Ducos.

  • Parliament for Europe. by MARQUAND, David
    MARQUAND, David
    Parliament for Europe.

Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1979. First edition hardback in original unclipped dust jacket. David Marquand is an academic and former Member of Parliament. Marquand resigned his seat to work as Chief Advisor (1977 to 1978) to his mentor Roy Jenkins who had been appointed President of the European Commission. This is one of several books of this type that were published in the late 1970s on direct elections and the European Parliament. Adopting a pro-community position, Marquand picks up on a number of themes, and, in a highly readable, talkative manner, gives his point of view on accepted myths concerning the Community and direct elections. Both dust jacket and book are in a very good condition. 147 pages (including index). 225 x 140 mm (8¾ x 5½ inches).
