Lacks the list of subscribers (often missing) at end of the first volume.
The work is directed against religious sectarianism. The first part of Hudibras was written in 1658, and the other two in 1664 and 1678 respectively. Very popular in its time, the poem was sufficiently popular to spawn imitators.
One early purchaser of the first two parts was Samuel Pepys. Whilst Pepys acknowledged that the book was the "greatest fashion" he could not see why it was deemed so witty. Hudibras was reprinted many times in the centuries following Butler's death.

The top hinge is partially split, corners a little worn, and a slight rubbing to the spine. Fresh interior, some foxed leaves. Small owner's stamp to the bottom of the title page. Overall, a very nice copy. The dramatic subject was the Siege of Calais (1346-1347) by Edward III of England, who claimed the crown of France during the Hundred Years War. It was taken from Froissart and Mézerai. This text is bound in with another text published the same year in Calais, on the same subject: History of Eustache de Saint-Pierre. At the siege of the city of Calais, under the reign of Philippe de Valois, King of France, in 1346 and 1347. Followed by the Letter from the Magistrates of Calais to Mr. De Belloy, on his Tragedy, and that of Mr. de Voltaire to the same Author. The play clearly had considerable impact in the 1760s. 200 x 125mm (7.75 by 5 inches). Xvi, 1-120,. viii, 1-72 pp.

Xvi, 1-120,. viii, 1-72 pp.
