Amsterdam: Wed. Aart Dirksz. Oossaan, 1694. A lovely copper plate engraving of the Ooster Kerk. Printed on two sheets, pasted together. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Paris: Dépôt de la Guerre, 1842. A collection of maps created by the war department, under the direction of Lt General Pelet. Box is covered in marbled paper. Large leather label with gilt titles. There is a dent to the top of the box, otherwise in good, clean condition. Linen-backed in 16 segments with the old label of the print and map dealer Heuguet on the canvas In very good condition. There is some darkening to the linen backing, but the maps themselves are in and excellent, clean state.

The maps contained are: Vassy, (1833) #68; Troyes (1837) #82; Reims (1826) #34; Chalons (1831) #50; Bar le Duc (1833) #51; Verdun (1831) #35; Arcis (1833) #67; Chaumont (1837) #85. These maps of France were drawn up by officers of the General Staff Corps under the direction of Lieutenant General Pelet and published by the Dépôt de la Guerre. A remarkable work for the finesse and quality of its details. The revision date is important because it explains, for example, the presence of railway lines or the fortifications of Paris built by Thiers after 1841. Maps of Paris and its region were first published between 1832 and 1839. The whole of France was covered with 247 maps. The Paris sheet is always centred on the Paris Meridian (Observatory) and not that of Greenwich. This series of maps is very precise and gives a state of the territory in the first half of the 19th century, both in terms of land use and relief.

These maps are all dated between 1831 and 1837, however, caution is always required. Indeed, the publication date shown at the bottom of the map has not been changed, although updates were made up to 1889. It is therefore important to avoid misinterpretations. As the box was made and labelled for these maps, and dated 1842 in gilt, we believe that this is an accurate final date for these maps, and they are all made before 1842. Box is 23cm x 14cm x 10cm. Maps are each 60cm x 88 cm.

Comme la boîte a été fabriquée et étiquetée pour ces cartes, et qu'elle porte la date de 1842 en lettres dorées, nous pensons qu'il s'agit d'une date finale exacte pour ces cartes, et qu'elles ont toutes été fabriquées avant 1842. La boîte mesure 23 cm x 14 cm x 10 cm. Les cartes mesurent chacune 60 cm x 88 cm.

Indre-Loire: Service Hydraulique, 1853. A folding manuscript map / cadastral plan of the commune of Ports and the surrounding area. 8 pages folded and pasted together, drawn to one side only. The first pate is the text / permissions and authorisations signed and dated (with official stamp) by individuals involved with the project. ( 4 different individuals have written comments and signed the plan). This seems to have been drawn up to accompany a cleaning / repair project for the roads and bridges of the area. Attractive hand coloured plan of the area, with extra section added on paper (see photos) showing the whole of the commune of Ports, including sections of the river Vienne. The plan is drawn on tracing paper / glassine, pasted to stiff card. This is a little darkened, but without significant flaws. Nice detailing and quality of work. Despite the title, there are no bridges in this commune. 290 by 1820mm (11½ by 71¾ inches).

Joli plan de la région, colorié à la main, avec une section supplémentaire ajoutée sur papier (voir photos) montrant l'ensemble de la commune de Ports, y compris des sections de la rivière Vienne. Le plan est dessiné sur du papier calque / glassine, collé sur une carte rigide. Ce dernier est un peu assombri, mais sans défauts significatifs. Les détails et la qualité du travail sont agréables. Malgré le titre, il n'y a pas de pont dans cette commune. 290 par 1820mm

Internally some light foxing. Pages in a good state, no tears or creases. XXXII pages of text, followed by [31] Sheets of plates: b/w illustrations, fold out maps, and plans. Complete. Barbie du Bocage refers to Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage (1760–1825), a notable French geographer and cartographer. He was a student of the famous geographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville and worked extensively in Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage held important roles including as attaché to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later in the Cabinet of Medals at the King's Library. He contributed to geographic and cartographic knowledge during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, creating maps such as those for the "Voyage du jeune Anacharsis." He also served under Napoleon's administration and was a member of the Institut de France. 26cm x 21cm. Conforms to the third edition referenced in WorldCat / OCLC: 8182752.

Barbie du Bocage fait référence à Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage (1760-1825), géographe et cartographe français de renom. Il fut l'élève du célèbre géographe Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville et travailla longuement à Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage a occupé des fonctions importantes, notamment celle d'attaché au ministère des Affaires étrangères, puis au Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque du Roi. Il a contribué aux connaissances géographiques et cartographiques à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle, en créant des cartes telles que celles du « Voyage du jeune Anacharsis ». London: Bowles & Rivington: 1724. A glazed and framed hand coloured map of South Wales. As well as the map, there are architectural details to the left side of the map. To the right are two fossils. Framed in light and dark green mounting board, and a green and gilt wooden frame. Overall in very clean and tidy condition. The original map fold is visible to the centre but is very light. There is a small repaired tear to the top right inch of the map - not affecting any detail. 200 x 320 mm (7¾ x 12½ inches).
Moll was a cartographer who moved to England in 1678 and opened a book and map store in London. He produced a variety of maps, most of which asserted British sovereignty over Empire and the New World.

Norimbergæ [Nürnberg]: Jo. Baptist Homann, 1716. Copper engraving by Johann Baptist Homann, with contemporary hand colouring. The cartouche has a scene of Gods watching the fighting on a battlefield. The map covers the Dauphiné in southeastern France. In the west is the Rhône, and in the east Piemont in Italy. 505 x 580 mm (20 x 22¾ inches). One central fold. The colours are strong and edges are a little delicate. Blank verso. Gravure sur cuivre de Johann Baptist Homann, avec coloration à la main contemporaine. Le cartouche a une scène de dieux regardant les combats sur un champ de bataille. La carte couvre le Dauphiné dans le sud-est de la France. A l'ouest se trouve le Rhône, et à l'est le Piémont en Italie. 505 x 580 mm (20 x 22¾ pouces). Un pli central. Les couleurs sont fortes et les bords sont un peu délicats. Verso vierge.

Amsterdam: Hondius, Jodocus, 1610. A hand coloured composite map of Anglesey, the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Circa 1610. Latin text to the verso "Anglia". This is from the Hondius printing. Double glazed and framed in a black and gilt frame. The two pages of Latin text are visible through the rear glazed panel. Very nice condition. There is a touch of darkening to the page, but very light. The crease to the centre of the page has been reinforced to the verso. The text pages are also clean and tidy. Signed in the plate ' Per Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio ' prior to his death in 1594. Hondius took over the plates from Mercator's grandson, and re-published his Atlas. 320 x 420 mm (12½ by 16½ inches).
Gerard Mercator was one of the greatest map makers ever known. He started his career as a professional instrument maker after finishing a masters degree at Louvain University and studying advanced mathematics. By the 1560's he was developing a new form of navigational projection. Rumold Mercator was his son.

1865. Twelve manuscript maps with dated inscription: "A.M. Tatham from her afft. Bro Sherman Dec. 1865". Rebound from a broken binding as a folding leporello series of maps in cloth covered boards "Bible Atlas S.R.T." on original label to the front. Binding is new and without flaws. Slight scratch to blank (back) of first map, otherwise the maps are in excellent condition.

The maps comprise: The Nations of the Ancient World, Assyria and the Adjacent Lands, Canaan in Patriarchal Ages, Canaan as Divided among The Tribes, Dominions of David and Solomon, Armenia, Egypt and Sinai Peninsula Illustrating the Journey of the Israelites to the Promised Land, Jerusalem and its Environs, The Kingdoms of Judah & Israel, Palestine in the time of Our Saviour, Modern Palestine, and The Eastern Mediterranean Illustrating the Travels of St. Paul. Each map folds out to approx. 165 x 133 mm. The maps still retain their original bright colouring.

Sherman Ralph Tatham was born in Hampstead in 1850. Educated at Winchester College 1862 - 1868, he became an architect. Tatham died in Hampstead in 1923 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery. The dedication here is to his younger sister Anna Maria Tatham.

Paris: Mondhare, C1770. First edition thus. A scarce, hand coloured vue d'optique of the Collosus at Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This is a French edition, published by Mondhare. Although undated it is circa 1770. There is some staining to the edges, with a large stain to the bottom left edge. Small nicks to the edge of the plate. The colouring is reasonable, but done quickly. The only other copy of this edition we can find is in the Library of Congress collection. 30cm x 43cm.

Paris: Chez Pasquier, 1660. First edition. A hand coloured aerial view of the city of Richelieu, showing the church, market hall and city walls. The image is from the vantage of the South East. It was probably intended for a vue d'Optique, as the market hall and church as shown inverse to their real situation. Hand coloured, with townsfolk throughout the town and in the foreground. Fictitious mountains in the background. The colouring is fairly crude, but contemporary. The image has been closely cropped, and laid onto backing paper. The backing paper has a little nicking to the edges. To the rear, the original title of the vue has been tipped onto the backing sheet. Image is 19cm x 36cm. Backing sheet is 21.5cm x 38.5cm. Richelieu, in Indre et Loire, was the birthplace of Cardinal Richelieu (who took his name from the town). At the height of his powers, he re built his home town, as an ideal city. The laid out plan of the city can be seen in this view. Construction took place between 1631 and 1642, the year of the Cardinal's death.

Au sommet de son pouvoir, il a reconstruit sa ville natale pour en faire une ville idéale. Le plan de la ville est visible sur cette vue. La construction a eu lieu entre 1631 et 1642, année de la mort du cardinal.
