After some time producing lithographic reproductions of art works, he also opened a photographic studio in Munich in 1853. Although this image is undated, it is around 1860. He produced a well known series of photographs of eminent citizens.

What appears to be photographs of dictators is actually composite images of individuals from the dictator's homeland. "Between November, 2007 and March, 2008, we took photographs of over 350 people in......... From them emerged the thirteen FACES OF EVIL, assembled from faces of people of the same ethnic origin as the according dictators. For example, the portrait of Hitler consists of 37 people. His nose belongs to an estate agent from Berlin, his upper lip to a locksmith in Dresden. His hair is put together from the hair of an artist in Weiden and a painter in Bamberg. The chin stems from a Hamburg restaurant owner, the eyes are those of a bank advisor in Frankfurt, the lachrymal sacks are from a precision mechanic in Bautzen, the throat is that of a Viennese banker...." So what is the point ? the artist believes dictators emerge "Because society allowed them, sometimes even encouraged them to do their evil. This suggests that a multitude of faces of active and passive accomplices stand behind the face of every dictator. Whilst everyone joins in to say "Never again!" after a reign of terror has ended, history shows that new tyrants can be allowed to rise to power again and again, in all parts of the world." Each of the photograph has a brief essay about the subject, in German and then in English. 119 pages. 31.5cm x 25cm.

119 pages. 31,5 cm x 25 cm.

This has a photograph of the door of the Basilica of Saint Zeno in Verona. A large photograph in excellent condition. 36cm x 27cm. Clean and neat. A tourist print, #645 to the bottom edge. From details on the photograph, this dates to around 1890. Backing card has a touch of marking and a chip to the top edge, but is good overall. Blank to verso. The second card is 58cm x 44cm. This holds two photographs of Rome, each pasted down with a hand inked double frame. The top photograph is St Peter's Square and Basilica. Eerily empty, bar a single horse and cart to one side. Inked to the edge is "Le Vatican, Rome." Mainly clean image with a touch of foxing to the top edge. 25.5cm x 35.5cm. This is circa 1875. Below is an image of The Forum in Rome. Again, devoid of visitors. This is possibly a photograph by Tommaso Cucioni (C1860-1875) or by another photographer copying Cucioni's framing. 27cm x 38.5cm. To the verso is an attractive inked pattern across the whole sheet. In place are two albumen photographs. To the top, is a small 15cm x 10cm image of the statue of the Lion of Lucerne. Probably a tourist print. Below this is a lovely image of Cologne Cathedral in 1875 (based on the two towers being under construction). A nice clean image. Overall an attractive ensemble of albumen images on two sheets.

Sadly, the album has no ownership details, but the first photograph is of a British ship, This is HMS Malabar, a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs, so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe, perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser, as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen, and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said, at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district, including the pyramids, mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album, but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man (both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi) and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph, where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary, with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. (Photographed by the Zangaki brothers). These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta, and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled, and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway, where there are seven photographs of Christiania (Oslo). There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally, the traveller returns to the United Kingdom, and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller (but still very respectable) albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total, we offer an album of 50 pages, containing a total of 56 albumen photographs (49 large format and seven slightly smaller).

The photograph is stamped on back 'TYRRELL'S MUSEUM / OF / ANTIQUES BOOKS & CURIOS / 143 CASTLEREAGH STREET / SYDNEY' 1829 and identified by Smalls auctions in Australia as an early reprint from the original 'Kerry' glass negative. The sepia reprints are likely the working stock of the Kerry Studio that Tyrell acquired along with the original glass negatives.
"Produced by the Sydney firm Charles Kerry & Co. and part of the Powerhouse Museum's Tyrrell collection which contains over 2,900 glass plate negatives by Kerry & Co. Although a few appear to be from the 1880s most were produced between 1892 and 1917. Over this period, and well into the early 1900s, prints from these negatives appeared in many Australian publications and albums of views. In 1903 the company began producing postcards from these negatives, further establishing the images as some of the most significant and best known early views of New South Wales.
Some of the more significant themes covered by the collection include; views of New South Wales, Queensland, country towns, Sydney, Indigenous Australians, the South Pacific, rural life, native flora and fauna, and sentimental views. In addition there are a number of significant events from the 1900s covered by the collection including; Embarkation of troops for the Boer War, Hordens fire and the Inauguration of the Commonwealth in 1901, the arrival of the Great White Fleet and the Burns verses Johnson boxing match at Rushcutters Bay in 1908."

This book was produced as part of an exhibition entitled 'Hors les murs' at the Galerie David Pluskwa Art Contemporain in Marseille. The title 'Inflammable Material' is inspired by the debut album of the Northern Irish punk band Stiff Little Fingers - which was released in 1979. The artist once said "I paint Marseille because I know it, I know my city, I am deeply immersed in it. You don't have to be anywhere else to create, Marseille is much more creative than Barcelona, London, Berlin or Paris. That's why it's essential for me." Large, portrait style softback book with a gate fold loose dust jacket. Laid loose, in a square cut-out to the dust jacket, is an original painting by the artist (on a square section of canvas). This is not signed - but assumed to be (and looks like) the artist's work. The book, the dust jacket, and the artwork are all in excellent shape. The book is full of colour photos of the artist at work, of his paintings etc. 24 x 30.5 cm. Unpaginated but approximately 60 pages. Not in WorldCat / OCLC.

24 x 30,5 cm. Non paginé, mais environ 60 pages. Ne figure pas dans WorldCat / OCLC.

    QUINN, Edward
James Joyce's Dublin. With selected writings from Joyce's works.

With an introduction by Samuel Beckett, this fascinating collection of Edward Quinn's mostly b/w photography uses the same reportage style as Joyce himself often adopted. Not the literary kind, but photographic incidents of daily life and atmospheric places in Ireland's capital city.

Émile Béchard was a notable French photographer born in 1844, recognized for his work in Egypt from around 1869 to 1880, especially in Cairo. He is best known for his evocative portraits and meticulously composed scenes depicting Egyptian daily life, including images of shopkeepers, merchants, workers, and dancers, framed through an orientalist perspective.
