Slightly rough edge where originally bound into the book. Engraving is 23cm x 39cm. Mount is 33cm x 45cm. The scene in which Queen Margaret places a paper crown on the head of the Duke of York is one of the most memorable moments in William Shakespeare's play Henry VI, Part 3. The episode occurs during the Wars of the Roses, a series of dynastic conflicts between the houses of Lancaster and York for the English throne in the 15th century. After the Battle of Wakefield (1460), Richard, Duke of York, is captured by the Lancastrian forces led by Queen Margaret of Anjou. In an act of cruel mockery, Margaret and her allies taunt York for his failed claim to the throne. She places a paper crown on his head, ridiculing his royal ambitions before ordering his execution. "York cannot speak, unless he wear a crown. A crown for York! and, lords, bow low to him: Hold you his hands, whilst I do set it on. (Putting a paper crown on his head) Ay, marry, sir, now looks he like a king!" (Henry VI, Part 3, Act 1, Scene 4).

Slightly rough edge where originally bound into the book. Engraving is 23cm x 39cm. Mount is 33cm x 45cm. Catherine Parr was the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, known for her intelligence, Protestant sympathies, and influence at court. Bishop Stephen Gardiner was a leading conservative Catholic and a powerful figure in Henry's court, often at odds with the reformist faction that Catherine Parr supported. During the later years of Henry's reign, religious tensions ran high, with conservative and reformist factions vying for influence over the king and the future of the English church. The scene in question dramatises an episode where Bishop Gardiner, intent on arresting Catherine Parr for her reformist views (which some considered heretical), approaches Henry VIII while he is conversing with Catherine in the garden. Gardiner's aim was to seize the queen, likely on charges of heresy, as part of a broader campaign against Protestant sympathizers at court. Henry VIII, however, rebukes Gardiner, protecting Catherine Parr from arrest and making it clear that he would not tolerate such actions against his wife.

"An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P96. Lords Brougham and Plunket, on their return to London, from a visit to Windsor Castle, were caught in a fog and lost their way, chiefly, it was said, in consequence of the efforts which the postillions had been making to fortify themselves against the weather. Lord Brougham has mounted the ample shoulders of Lord Plunket, to take an observation, on the principle mentioned by Swift, who says, "It is with human intellects as it is with liquors, the lightest is ever at the top." The appearance of the drivers bears testimony to the fact that strong ale has had something to do with the disaster; and for the solution of the riddle of " Reform Bill," whose ale appears to have done the mischief.

John Doyle (1797–1868), known by the pen name H.B., was an influential Irish caricaturist, political cartoonist, painter, and lithographer. He is considered a pioneer of "polite caricature," a style that avoided grotesque exaggerations and instead relied on wit and subtle humor to critique political figures and events. His work marked a departure from the harsh satire of earlier artists like James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

Muhamedans destined for the invasion of Southern Germany!" Single sheet printed in original water colour and ink lithograph. 40.5cm x 33 cm. In the upper left margin a larger paper damage with loss of the letter "A" of the title bar. Otherwise in good condition apart from a slight crease and damage to the lower left corner. We can find no copies of this poster on sale at the present time. This is a curious poster. While France and the Ottoman Empire had a long history of alliance and co-operation dating back to the 16th century, by the time of the Franco-Prussian War, this partnership was largely symbolic and did not translate into Ottoman support or intervention during the conflict. We can only assume that this was purely propaganda, in modern terms a "dog whistle" to the racist elements of the German population.

" An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P160. This quotes Earl Grey as saying "Hitherto society, in this happy island, has been constructed upon the model of a cone; the common people forming the base, the monarch the apex, and the various other classes ranging in order in the intermediate space. For my own aggrandizement I have reversed the figure. I well know that, if left to itself, this state of society could not endure, any more than a cone could stand unsupported upon its apex. But here is my master-stroke of policy. The broad base of the populace makes a firm footing for me; and my opponents are as much interested as I am in supporting me; because, if they desert me, the cone will fall, and anarchy, as fatal to them as to myself, will ensue."
