China: No Publisher, C1890. An attractive water colour with gouache on paper with an artist's seal to the bottom right of the sheet. This appears to be an artist copying the work of Zhou, Pei Qun, whose water colour in the Wellcome collection is very similar. There are significant differences though. Although the image and stance are the same, our painting is somewhat larger. It is of a similar very high standard of craftsmanship. There are slight differences to the trousers, shoes and face that show it to be substantially different. The label on the example in the Wellcome collection states in Chinese "Scavenger of night-soil, goes from house to house early in the morning; carries lantern in left hand." An alternative narrative, as stated in Michio Uchida's "Illustrated Guide to Beijing Customs", "It was a common sight to see a man scooping up horse and cow dung and throwing it into a bucket on his back." This was then sold on as fertiliser. The colouring is excellent, and the paper is only a little marked / darkened. Attractively framed under glass behind a deep gilt edges passe partout and in a dark lacquered frame. There is a touch of handling to the frame, but overall in excellent condition. The sheet exposed is 34cm x 22cm. The frame is 49cm x 39cm. Wellcome Collection 571517i.

. Une jolie aquarelle à la gouache sur papier, portant le cachet de l'artiste en bas à droite de la feuille. Il semble s'agir d'un artiste reproduisant l'œuvre de Zhou Pei Qun, dont l'aquarelle de la collection Wellcome présente de grandes similitudes. On note toutefois des différences notables. Bien que l'image et la posture soient identiques, notre peinture est légèrement plus grande. Elle témoigne d'un niveau de maîtrise technique tout aussi élevé. De légères différences au niveau du pantalon, des chaussures et du visage montrent qu'il s'agit d'une œuvre sensiblement différente. L'étiquette de l'exemplaire de la collection Wellcome indique en chinois : « Ramasseur de fumier, va de maison en maison tôt le matin ; porte une lanterne dans la main gauche. » Une autre description, tirée de l'« Illustrated Guide to Beijing Customs » de Michio Uchida, indique : « Il était courant de voir un homme ramasser le fumier de cheval et de vache et le jeter dans un seau qu'il portait sur le dos. » La coloration est excellente, et le papier ne présente que quelques légères traces / traces de noircissement. Joliment encadrée sous verre derrière un passe-partout aux bords dorés profonds et dans un cadre laqué foncé. Le cadre présente quelques traces d'usure, mais est globalement en excellent état. La feuille exposée mesure 34 cm x 22 cm. Le cadre mesure 49 cm x 39 cm. Collection Wellcome 571517i.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First edition in dust wrapper. Wrapper is clean, with a touch of nicking and edgewear and with a 1cm closed tear to the head of the spine. Now in protective archival film. Hardback in clean and neat green cloth with just a touch of bumping. Book is in good clean condition throughout. What is interesting about this copy, is that there is a gift inscription to the verso of the half title, stating that the book was taken from the Iranian Embassy shortly after the SAS had ended the embassy siege in 1980. The annotation claims that it was taken from the embassy an hour after the siege, but apart from this seeming unlikely (with security concerns at the time) the date given is actually 3 weeks after the end of the siege. There is no evidence that this is true but a strange thing to make up and we offer it as an interesting oddity! 414 pages. 220 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches).

Ce qui est intéressant à propos de cet exemplaire, c'est qu'il y a une inscription cadeau au verso du faux titre, indiquant que le livre a été pris à l'ambassade d'Iran peu de temps après que le SAS eut mis fin au siège de l'ambassade en 1980. L'annotation prétend qu'il a été prise de l'ambassade une heure après le siège, mais à part cela qui semble peu probable (avec des problèmes de sécurité à l'époque), la date indiquée est en fait 3 semaines après la fin du siège. Il n'y a aucune preuve que cela soit vrai mais une chose étrange à inventer et nous l'offrons comme une bizarrerie intéressante ! 414 pages. 220 par 150 mm

Tokyo: Wakasaya Yoichi (若狹屋与市), C1843. First edition. A lovely copy of this rare woodblock print. Believed to by by Utagama Kunisada circa 1843. The print, in bright colours, shows a group of seven sumo masters looking down on a group of wrestlers fighting. There are also two clothed Sumo masters standing amongst the students. There are 20 students. The teachers have names in labels by each of them, and they are clearly recognisable characters. The work bears the publisher's seal of Wakasaya Yoichi, an eminent Tokyo publisher, who printed many famous artists. This is part of the reason for our attribution, as Kunisada often portrayed both individual wrestlers, and groups of sumo wrestlers and wrestling schools. He also regularly published with Wakasaya Yoichi. A excellent example, there is a light crease to the bottom part of the print (which could probably be ironed out). The edges have fractional nicking, but overall is in very nice condition. 37cm x 25cm. A rare piece. We cannot find another example of this particular woodblock print.

L'estampe, aux couleurs vives, montre un groupe de sept maîtres de sumo regardant de haut un groupe de lutteurs en train de se battre. Deux maîtres de sumo vêtus se tiennent également au milieu des élèves. Les élèves sont au nombre de 20. Les professeurs portent des noms dans des étiquettes à côté de chacun d'eux, et ce sont des personnages clairement reconnaissables. L'œuvre porte le sceau de l'éditeur Wakasaya Yoichi, un éminent éditeur de Tokyo qui a imprimé de nombreux artistes célèbres. C'est en partie la raison de notre attribution, car Kunisada a souvent représenté des lutteurs individuels, des groupes de lutteurs de sumo et des écoles de lutte. Il a également publié régulièrement avec Wakasaya Yoichi. Un excellent exemple, il y a un léger pli sur la partie inférieure de l'impression (qui pourrait probablement être repassé). Les bords sont légèrement entaillés, mais l'ensemble est en très bon état. 37cm x 25cm. Une pièce rare. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemple de cette gravure sur bois.

Conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC: 216601857. Sir John Forrest (1847–1918) was an Australian explorer and politician. He was the first premier of Western Australia (1890–1901) and a long-serving cabinet minister in federal politics. At the time of this address, he was the Treasurer of the federal government.

Japan: Matsumoto Studios, C1930. A beautiful hand painted panel of a humming bird flying from a tree covered in blossom. Seal to the bottom left. Hand painted on paper, laid onto brown card, in turn laid onto pale brown paper. Held under glass in a simple brown frame. This image is either a copy of, or copied by Matsumoto studios in London, who provided hand painted Japanese art works to the British public. This seems to be a higher quality painting than the Masumoto editions we have seen, and the red signature stamp is different - but the image is identical. A lovely item in excellent condition. Fractional discolouration to the pale brown backing paper only. Image is 19cm x 5cm. The frame is 35cm x 13.5cm.

. Un magnifique panneau peint à la main d'un oiseau qui fredonne et s'envole d'un arbre couvert de fleurs. Sceau en bas à gauche. Peint à la main sur papier, posé sur une carte brune, elle-même posée sur un papier brun pâle. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre marron. Cette image est soit une copie, soit une copie des studios Matsumoto à Londres, qui fournissaient des œuvres d'art japonaises peintes à la main au public britannique. Cette peinture semble être de meilleure qualité que les éditions Masumoto que nous avons vues, et le cachet rouge de la signature est différent - mais l'image est identique. Un bel objet en excellent état. Seule la décoloration du papier brun pâle du support est minime. L'image mesure 19 cm x 5 cm. Le cadre mesure 35 cm x 13,5 cm.

Tokyo: Yuyudo, C1930. A beautiful woodblock print reproducing one of Hiroshige's famous illustrations from the collection "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." This print shows Komagata-do Temple and Azuma Bridge. Originally published by Uoei, 1857, this reproduction is by Yuyudo. Although undated, it is likely from the 1930's. Although a reproduction, it is a genuine woodblock copy (not a modern digital or lithographic print). In excellent clean condition, it is loosely tipped into a card folder / passe partout, but can be removed for framing. Komagata-do Temple is located in the triangular plot of land near Komagata Bridge in Kaminarimon 2-chome, Taito Ward. Originally, it was a storehouse-style temple located on the riverbank in Komagata 1-chome, enshrining a Bato Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon). Edoites pronounce Komagata-do Temple as "Komando." The illustration, perhaps inspired by the famous poem by the geisha Takao, "You are now near Komagata, singing the cuckoo," depicts a cuckoo flying in the sky. The print of the rainy May sky is magnificent, showcasing the skill of the printer. The picture shows Azuma Bridge from the roof of Komagata-do Temple, depicting houses on the Honjo riverbank on the other side. The white wall belongs to the lower residence of Hosokawa Notonokami. A red flag is visible in the foreground. This is the signboard flag of a general store called "Hyakusuke" located across the street from Komagata-do, which sold rouge and face powder. It was designed to be visible from a distance, featuring the rouge they sold. It was a very eye-catching signboard at the time. 34cm x 23cm. Passe partout is 49cm x 34cm.

. Une magnifique estampe sur bois reproduisant l'une des célèbres illustrations d'Hiroshige issues de la collection « Cent vues célèbres d'Edo ». Cette estampe représente le temple Komagata-do et le pont Azuma. Publiée à l'origine par Uoei en 1857, cette reproduction est l'œuvre de Yuyudo. Bien qu'elle ne porte pas de date, elle date probablement des années 1930. Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une reproduction, il s'agit d'une véritable copie sur bois (et non d'une impression numérique ou lithographique moderne). En excellent état, elle est simplement collée dans un passe-partout, mais peut être retirée pour être encadrée. Le temple Komagata-do est situé sur un terrain triangulaire près du pont Komagata, dans le quartier de Kaminarimon 2-chome, arrondissement de Taito. À l'origine, il s'agissait d'un temple de style entrepôt situé sur les berges de la rivière à Komagata 1-chome, abritant un Bato Kannon (Kannon à tête de cheval). Les habitants d'Edo prononcent le nom du temple Komagata-do « Komando ». China: N.P, C1950. First edition / original painting. A classic shanshui (山水) landscape with excellent spatial depth. The artists name and seal are to the top right. 冯有年 = Féng Yǒunián — a given name meaning "prosperous years" or "longevity." There is a further seal (chop), to the middle left of the painting. This is probably the artist's seal of authenticity. The artist uses all three traditional planes: Misty distant mountains fading on the right; a large dominant central mountain mass dense with pine forests; and a detailed foreground of rocks, a gnarled pine tree, and a stream. Crucially, there's a small pavilion tucked into the right mid-ground. The pavillion is a common Daoist motif signalling that the landscape is a place of retreat and contemplation, not just scenery. A beautiful example of mid twentieth century Shanshui art. Skillfully exectuted. No significant marking. Held under a gilt edged passe partout, in a wooden frame under glass. The visible part of the painting is 29cm x 36cm. The frame itself is 45cm x 51.5cm,

. Première édition / peinture originale. Un paysage shanshui (山水) classique doté d'une excellente profondeur spatiale. Le nom et le sceau de l'artiste figurent en haut à droite. Un autre sceau (probablement celui du collectionneur de l'œuvre) est visible au milieu à gauche de la peinture. L'artiste utilise les trois plans traditionnels : des montagnes lointaines brumeuses s'estompant à droite ; un grand massif montagneux central dominant, dense de forêts de pins ; et un premier plan détaillé composé de rochers, d'un pin noueux et d'un ruisseau. Élément crucial, un petit pavillon est niché au milieu du plan intermédiaire, à droite. Le pavillon est un motif taoïste courant, indiquant que le paysage est un lieu de retraite et de contemplation, et pas seulement un décor. Un bel exemple de l'art Shanshui du milieu du XXe siècle. Habilement exécuté. Aucune marque significative. Monté sous un passe-partout à bord doré, dans un cadre en bois sous verre. La partie visible du tableau mesure 29 cm x 36 cm. Le cadre lui-même mesure 45 cm x 51,5 cm,
