Reigate: N.P, C1935. First edition. A lovely original sketch of the Santa Maria, Columbus's flag ship. In pencil and graphite crayon. Signed to the bottom left. This appears to have been an illustration intended for a book, as there is text beneath about the sailor's fear of the sea week in the Sargasso sea. We have been unable to identify any book that this was used in. A nice, clean and skilled pencil illustration, with just a touch of creasing to the sheet. To the rear is a feint beginning of another similar sketch and the artists name and address in Surrey. 37cm x 24cm. A lovely piece. The floating sargassum weed that grows all across the Sargasso had a malevolent reputation. In 1492, Christopher Columbus was the first to record finding the stuff, a bright gold plant that resembles ordinary seaweed, but remarkably, has no need of roots, simply floating over the nearly 3,000 fathoms of ocean separating it from the abyssal plain below. Columbus and his frightened men were tricked by the weed into thinking they must be near land, when in fact, they were still in the mid-Atlantic. In the years that followed, stories grew of weed thick enough to trap ships, a legend whose modern successor was the Bermuda Triangle.

Il semble s'agir d'une illustration destinée à un livre, car elle est accompagnée d'un texte évoquant la peur des marins pendant leur semaine en mer des Sargasses. Nous n'avons pas réussi à identifier le livre dans lequel elle a été utilisée. Une belle illustration au crayon, propre et habile, avec juste quelques plis sur la feuille. Au verso, on aperçoit le début d'un autre croquis similaire, ainsi que le nom et l'adresse de l'artiste dans le Surrey. 37 cm x 24 cm. Une très belle pièce. Les algues sargasses qui flottent dans toute la mer des Sargasses avaient une réputation malveillante. En 1492, Christophe Colomb fut le premier à signaler sa découverte : une plante dorée brillante qui ressemble à une algue ordinaire, mais qui, fait remarquable, n'a pas besoin de racines et flotte simplement à près de 3 000 brasses au-dessus de l'océan qui la sépare de la plaine abyssale. Colomb et ses hommes effrayés ont été trompés par cette algue, qui leur a fait croire qu'ils devaient être près de la terre ferme, alors qu'en réalité, ils se trouvaient encore au milieu de l'Atlantique. Dans les années qui ont suivi, des histoires ont circulé selon lesquelles cette algue était suffisamment dense pour piéger les navires, une légende dont le successeur moderne est le triangle des Bermudes.

Nice and clean, but with a little bumping / edgewear to the head and tail of the spine, and slight splitting to the spine edge. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, twenty-three colour plates, and many in-text images. Internally clean and bright with tissue guards to the illustrations. xii, [ii], 403, [i]. pages. 22.5cm x 15cm. This work chronicles the author's journey from Scotland to South Asia. The memoir blends adventure narrative with cultural observations, reflecting early 20th-century European perspectives on India and Burma (modern-day Myanmar). William Gordon Burn Murdoch(1862–1939) was a Scottish painter, travel writer, and polar explorer known for his contributions to Antarctic exploration and Scottish cultural revival.

Silver gelatin print, with albumen paper process. Signed in the negative. Studio Stamped. Title written in the negative. Stamp (slightly visible, see image) on verso. This is a print by Tyrrell from negatives from Kerry & Co. There is a copy referenced at the Maas Museum of New South Wales.

The photograph is stamped on back 'TYRRELL'S MUSEUM / OF / ANTIQUES BOOKS & CURIOS / 143 CASTLEREAGH STREET / SYDNEY' 1829 and identified by Smalls auctions in Australia as an early reprint from the original 'Kerry' glass negative. The sepia reprints are likely the working stock of the Kerry Studio that Tyrell acquired along with the original glass negatives.
"Produced by the Sydney firm Charles Kerry & Co. and part of the Powerhouse Museum's Tyrrell collection which contains over 2,900 glass plate negatives by Kerry & Co. Although a few appear to be from the 1880s most were produced between 1892 and 1917. Over this period, and well into the early 1900s, prints from these negatives appeared in many Australian publications and albums of views. In 1903 the company began producing postcards from these negatives, further establishing the images as some of the most significant and best known early views of New South Wales.
Some of the more significant themes covered by the collection include; views of New South Wales, Queensland, country towns, Sydney, Indigenous Australians, the South Pacific, rural life, native flora and fauna, and sentimental views. In addition there are a number of significant events from the 1900s covered by the collection including; Embarkation of troops for the Boer War, Hordens fire and the Inauguration of the Commonwealth in 1901, the arrival of the Great White Fleet and the Burns verses Johnson boxing match at Rushcutters Bay in 1908."

Paris: Calmann-Lévy, 1957. First Edition. A lovely copy of this French photo book. Partly the story of a Mongolian child, partly a documentary of Mongolian life, it is illustrated throughout by Ergy's fine photographs. Black and white throughout. Soft covers with red and black detail and photographs to front and rear cover. There is fractional bumping and fractional darkening to the covers. Internally spotless throughout. Ergy Landau (1896–1967) was a Hungarian-French photographer best known for her portraits, female nudes, advertising work, and dynamic images of inter war Paris. Despite significant contributions to 20th-century photography, her name remains less recognised than many of her male contemporaries such as Brassaï or Robert Capa. Unpaginated but 46 pages. 31cm x 22.5cm. Première édition. Un bel exemplaire de ce livre de photos français. Il s'agit à la fois de l'histoire d'un enfant mongol et d'un documentaire sur la vie en Mongolie, illustré tout au long par les belles photographies d'Ergy. Les photos sont en noir et blanc. Couvertures souples avec des détails et des photographies en rouge et noir sur les couvertures avant et arrière. Les couvertures présentent de légères bosses et un léger assombrissement. L'intérieur est impeccable. Ergy Landau (1896-1967) était une photographe franco-hongroise surtout connue pour ses portraits, ses nus féminins, ses travaux publicitaires et ses images dynamiques du Paris de l'entre-deux-guerres. Malgré ses contributions significatives à la photographie du XXe siècle, son nom reste moins reconnu que celui de nombre de ses contemporains masculins tels que Brassaï ou Robert Capa. Cairo: Émile Béchard, 1875. First edition. Entitled No. 59 Jeune femme Fellah to the bottom left of the photograph, and clearer, Béchard to the bottom right. Undated but Circa 1875. A lovely image, showing a young woman gazing into the distance. Photograph is 25.5cm x 21.5cm under a cream bevelled passe partout of 35.5cm x 31.5cm. Both are very clean and tidy. Passe partout has a couple of small marks to it. A rare piece of photography.
We have been unable to find any copies of this particular photograph online, bar an image in an Arabic pdf. There was an almost identical but slightly different image taken by Tancrède R. Dumas, in 1889.
Émile Béchard was a notable French photographer born in 1844, recognized for his work in Egypt from around 1869 to 1880, especially in Cairo. He is best known for his evocative portraits and meticulously composed scenes depicting Egyptian daily life, including images of shopkeepers, merchants, workers, and dancers, framed through an orientalist perspective.

Une belle image, montrant une jeune femme regardant au loin. La photographie mesure 25,5 cm x 21,5 cm sous un passe-partout biseauté crème de 35,5 cm x 31,5 cm. Les deux sont très propres et bien entretenus. Le passe-partout présente quelques petites marques. Une photographie rare. Nous n'avons trouvé aucune copie de cette photographie en particulier sur Internet, à l'exception d'une image dans un pdf en arabe. Il existe une image presque identique, mais légèrement différente, prise par Tancrède R. Dumas en 1889. Émile Béchard était un photographe français de renom né en 1844, reconnu pour son travail en Égypte entre 1869 et 1880, en particulier au Caire. Il est surtout connu pour ses portraits évocateurs et ses scènes méticuleusement composées illustrant la vie quotidienne égyptienne, notamment des images de commerçants, de marchands, d'ouvriers et de danseurs, cadrées dans une perspective orientaliste.

"...To which is prefixed, a geographical memoir of Abyssinia and South-Eastern Africa by James McQueen esq. grounded on the missionaries' journals, and the expedition of the Pacha of Egypt up the Nile." Original brown blind stamped buckram with gilt titles to spine. Yellow end papers. Small bookseller's embossed stamp to the half title. (George Gardham of Beverley). Two folding hand coloured maps of the relevant parts of Africa.. The buckram is a little faded and rubbed to the edge. There is a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine with slight loss. A split to the board has been repaired. A closed tear to the half title page has been neatly repaired. The maps are in very nice clean condition. xxvii, 529. pp.

Ubud, Bali: NP, C1990. An attractive water colour in the Balinese style by the artist Doni. (We cannot identify who this is). A delicate water colour painting featuring two small birds, a butterfly, and several pink flowers with large, triangular leaves. It exemplifies the detailed, nature-inspired style for which Ubud is famous. Mounted under a green gilt edged passe partout in a gilt frame under glass. Overall in excellent condition, with a touch of rubbing to the gilt edge of the frame only. Painting is 19cm x 14cm. The frame is 27cm x 22cm.

. Une jolie aquarelle dans le style balinais par l'artiste Doni (Nous ne pouvons pas identifier de qui il s'agit). Cette aquarelle délicate présente deux petits oiseaux, un papillon et plusieurs fleurs roses avec de grandes feuilles triangulaires. Elle illustre le style détaillé et inspiré par la nature qui fait la renommée d'Ubud. Montée sous un passe partout bordé de vert doré dans un cadre doré sous verre. L'ensemble est en excellent état, avec un léger frottement sur le bord doré du cadre uniquement. La peinture mesure 19 cm x 14 cm. Le cadre mesure 27 cm x 22 cm.

Québec: Imprimé par le "Soleil", 1898. First edition. An attractive guide ot the region of Lake Saint Jean in Quebec. Coloured covers, showing a train passing through fields of corn, a farmer and horses are gathering sheaves on the rear cover. Stapled. The covers are cleaning, but there is splitting to the bottom 2 cm of the spine. The staples have rusted, and so have left some staining. Otherwise in good, clean condition. Some pencil annotations to the book. 72 pages. Bound in to the rear is a list of the officials for the Department of Colonisation, and the Chemin de Fer. There is also a map of the region. Includes 14 full page black and white reproductions of photographs. A scarce item. 21.5cm x 10.5cm.

Bruxelles: Jacano, 1954. First edition. A lovely collection of limited (one of 50), numbered water-colour prints by the Belgian artist Jacano. These 7 plates are all on the subject of cutting and processing trees into timber in the Congo. Each is numbered in pencil below the artists printed signature. High quality images. Tipped onto heavy, laid paper. The title of each work is printed in the corner. There is a touch of darkening to the page edges only. The 7 prints are held within a stiff card folder / portfolio, which has the publication details and state that the set is limited to 50 copies. The folder is a little darkened, has some edge-wear and marking, there is a repaired tear to the top edge. Jacques Hanot (known as Jacano) was a Belgian artist, born in Brussels in 1923. He travelled to the Congo several times, sponsored by Sabena airlines. He was a diverse artist, and often designed posters and painted water-colours on the subject of the Congo. 7 sheets. Water colours are 21cm x 15cm. The sheets are 31cm x 24cm. Conforms to FirstSearch / WorldCat OCLC: 1400739058.

Elles sont collées sur du papier épais et vergé. Le titre de chaque œuvre est imprimé dans le coin. Il y a un léger assombrissement sur les bords de la page seulement. Les 7 tirages sont conservés dans une chemise/un portefeuille en carton rigide, qui contient les détails de la publication et indique que l'ensemble est limité à 50 exemplaires. La chemise est un peu assombrie, présente quelques marques et usures sur les bords, ainsi qu'une déchirure réparée sur le bord supérieur. Jacques Hanot (connu sous le nom de Jacano) était un artiste belge, né à Bruxelles en 1923. Il s'est rendu plusieurs fois au Congo, sponsorisé par la compagnie aérienne Sabena. A very nice catalogue on the theme of Japan, richly illustrated with reproductions of prints. The covers are slightly darkened, and inside, the book is a little darkened to the edges. Small bump to the top corner. Overall though a very nice copy of this wine catalogue. 24cm x 19cm.

Egypt: S.P, C1895. A beautiful albumen photograph of a Fellah woman, with long veil, carrying a basket of fruit. This was a studio portrait circa 1895. Anonymous, but conforms exactly to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam photograph reference RP-F-1997-28-35. This includes the text to the base of the photograph - which IS present on our copy, but has been hidden by the passe partout / mount. Photograph visible is 26.5cm x 23cm. Mount is 37.5cm x 32cm. All apparent flaws / scratches to the photograph are also present on the Rijksmuseum copy. In excellent condition.
