Venetia[Venice]: Apresso Giorgio Angelieri, 1604. The Epistles and Gospels to be read throughout the year, according to the Church services. Originally written by the Jesuit Petrus Canisius (although only the Translators are mentioned in the title). Original full vellum binding, with titles written to a paper label on the spine. Gift inscription to the front end paper. vignette title page with inscription "librio di Guid Antonio Belerarni 1708" in ink. Publisher's introduction, Saint days of the year (with a small woodcut for each month), contents, and text. The pagination runs to page 572. The second part (Coninciano le Lettioni) has a separate pagination, but was always intended to be part of the same work, the main part finishing the register at Nn8 - the continuation beginning Aaa. There are a large number of woodcuts throughout, and each new date / lesson, has a historiated capital. A very nice copy. The vellum binding is somewhat darkened and with a little marking, but is still flexible and has no cracks to it. The hand written spine label is still legible. Internally, clean and tidy throughout. There is a little darkening to the pages with the odd page having foxing spots. A few of the pages have tiny nicks to the edges and there is a tiny amount of worm damage to the rear of the book, but none affecting the text. Overall a very nice copy of this work. This is a reprint of this work. There were numerous editions, and variations of the work by different publishers. This work is translated by Remigio Fiorentino. His real name was Remigio Nannini. He was born in Florence (Firenze) Circa 1521 He died in 1581, and was a Dominican. This was his most popular work. Angelieri published his edition from 1590. [xxvi], 1-572, 1-84 pp.

This volume has had damage to the bottom edge (looks as if perhaps mice before binding or similar?). As a result, the text block has been shaved to the base (not affecting text). This has resulted in the book being 2.5 cm shorter than the other two volumes. Vol 2. 1710. This volume is the 3rd Edition. The front end paper has had the top 3 cm neatly cut away (seems to have been removing an ownership signature). Slight chipping to top edge. some water staining to the bottom edge, with some loss of paper to the bottom on about 20 pages (not affecting text). Volume 3. 1710. 3rd Edition. A little rubbing to the boards, but overall in good+ condition.

Engraved title and 9 full-page engravings in text depicting the torments of the damned in Hell by Philipp Sadeler.

Contemporary vellum with two brass and vellum clasps to close (one of the clasps is lacking). A quarter (2 cm) of the vellum to the spine is lost, with cracking to the spine edge. Some stains to boards. Ownership inscription on the front end paper and to the title page. Text is in Latin. Text block is clean and presentable. Some offsetting from the engraved plates. The plates appear to have been trimmed quite tightly but with minimal (if any) loss. This third edition seems to be a pocket edition, so that you are able to consult the torments at any time! The plates and typesetting seem to have been slightly re-worked from other (including later) editions by Leysserius. The dedication addresses the apostolic nuncio in Germany, bishop Pier Luigi Carafa (1581-1655), whose arms appear at foot of title. Eight torments are described, commented on and vividly illustrated with fine engravings, i.e. darkness, lamenting, hunger and thirst, stench, fire, excruciating remorse, ill company and desperation. The engraving related to lamenting shows an improbable music sheet with notes and lyrics ( Vae vae vae, ah ah ah ah, heu eheu aeternitas ) of the chant of sorrow sung by the damned.

Dünnh. II, 1399, 15.3 - "Immensely gruesome and drastic description of the torments of hell..." (Dünnhaupt on first edition in the same year). "Infernus" Together with "De Aeternitate" (1620) and "Caelum" (1635) were conceived as a trilogy. Jeremias Drexel S.J. (also known as Hieremias Drexelius or Drechsel) (1581–1638) was a Jesuit writer of devotional literature and a professor of the humanities and rhetoric. He served for 23 years as court preacher in Munich to Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria and his wife Elizabeth of Lorraine. He wrote numerous theological works.

There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839
his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral
Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.

First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617.

Our copy is allegedly from the Spanish school of painting, however, following our own research, we feel it more likely to have Italian provenance. The title to the painting, states that this was painted after the Edessene image of King Abgar. This seems to have been a copy of the Edessa image - which relates to the mission to King Abgar V, a First century king of Edessa, who held a cloth bearing the image of Christ. This was called the Mandylion, and it seems to have been very similar to the Turin shroud. King Abgar was believed to have written a letter to Jesus, and to have received a reply dictated by Jesus. We can find only a small number of similar portraits of Jesus with the same (or similar) inscription. One is in the possession of a Church in Varralo (Italy) and is dated to 1694. (It was apparently painted on the occasion of the translation of the Shroud to the Cathedral in Turin in 1694). There are apparently in the Diocese of Turin three other copies of the Abagarum image. There is also a later copy in the Lausanne Museum. The majority of the portraits online are of a lower standard of portraiture than this example. Black background with the face of Jesus, surrounded by a halo, which also emanates from his beard (this halo showing shoots of light seems to be one of the distinguishing features of the Abagarum image). The paint is in excellent condition, with just slight bubbling in areas. There is no loss or scratching. The painting is on and old and darkened canvas, held on a sturdy wooden frame. The front of the frame appears to be a later layer, added to the front of the canvas surround. This is in dark green. The surround has some rubbing and loss of surface paint to it. The painted area is 50cm x 41cm and the frame 59cm x 49cm. Approximately 5cm deep. It is possible that this is a later copy of an Abagarum portrait, but is nevertheless a lovely example of iconography.

. Portrait à l'huile de Jésus. Vers 1690-1710.
