Na, 1951. Silver gelatin photograph under white passe partout. Originally photographed in Paris in 1951, this is a later (undated) reprint of the original negative - probably from the 1980's. No printer recorded. To the rear of the photograph is written (in pencil) "Robert Doisneau +/- 1951" (not signed by him). Image size is 250 mm x 200 mm. Passe Partout is 500 mm x 400 mm. Both photograph and mount are in good, clean, unblemished condition.

France: n/a, 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical (such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes.) Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect (text in French) has one or more illustrations following. Many (but not all) of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact, there are a few more, but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened, and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge, and is darkened, and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm (13 x 10 inches). Magnifique portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français sur 'Perspective'. Los Angeles: Cinubia, 1996. A lovely copy of this first edition. Clean and tidy blue dust wrapper over blue embossed boards. 160 pages. 31 pages of text (in German) followed by 120 pages of black and white photographs published by Manfred Heiting of Cinubia on high quality glossy photopaper. With an essay by Holger Tiedemann. Keetman was a founding member of the avant-garde photography group fotoform and played a decisive role in determining the direction there so called subjective photography took. In the exhibition Subjective Photography put together by Otto Steinert in 1951 and in the accompanying photobook, Keetman's works have a formative role. From 1948, Keetman was represented with pictures in all major German and some international photo magazines. His work series Eine Woche im Volkswagenwerk (Volkswagen: A week at the Factory), which he photographed in 1953 in Wolfsburg, became particularly well known. His pictures of assembly line technology, car body parts and technical details of the Volkswagen Beetle were revolutionary, graphically designed photography through cropping and perspective. Original green cloth with decoration to front board and titles in gilt. A little rubbing to the boards and slight bumping to head and tail of the spine but still respectable. End papers showing the plan of Kensington Gardens. Overall decent condition with moderate foxing throughout. Gift inscription to half title page. Slight loosening to binding so that the book easily falls open to page 1. - but still holding well. Text in English. [ix], 126 pages. 210 by 160mm (8¼ by 6¼ inches). London: NA. A nice photograph album, from Circa 1918. Half faux leather with card boards and cord ties. This contains 22 tourist photographs of London. All are size 6.5cm x 8.5cm. Nice sepia tone with white numbers. These seem to be mainly (or possibly all) by Valentine. There are handwritten captions alongside many of the photographs of the major London landmarks. The dating is from the style and vehicles shown. There are then a number of blank pages. To the rear of the album are 4 larger (10cm x 14cm photographs with 3 exteriors and one interior of British country houses. These would appear to be slightly later photographs - perhaps 1930's. A total of 26 photographs. Provenance: From a Brussels antique market, Small photograph (from Brussels studio) with a photograph of an aircraft, circa 1950's. A nice collection. Album dimensions 175 by 205mm (7 by 8 inches).

Arnhem: 1880. A photograph by Brainich & Leusink of the celebrated artwork by Thomas Brooks showing Grace Darling on the way to rescue survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. Her daring rescue of the survivors brought her fame, and several portraits, including this one by Thomas Brooks, now held in the RNLI Grace Darling museum. 165 by 110mm (6½ by 4¼ inches). Blank to verso, slightly stained, but sound. The image itself is bright. Albumen photograph stuck to cardboard. 165 x 110 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches).

Albumen print, or Albumen silver. The albumen print became popular because it produced a rich sharp image. The process involves coating a sheet of paper with albumen (egg white), making the paper's surface glossy and smooth. It is then coated in a solution of silver nitrate. It was popular from 1860-1890, and was often used to create Carte d'visite.
