Attractive book plate of Mary Clarkson Bagby (born Mary Clarkson- Allen in 1896, in Baltimore, U.S.A) to the front. Mary lived in various locations due to her husband's diplomatic and military career, including a notable period in China after World War I. This book obviously remained in the family, as it also bears the name Mary G. Duyvendak - Allen written to the front in neat ink handwriting.

Internally clean. Bound in after Preface is a single leaf manuscript copy of a letter from George Colman dated February 1824, citing its inclusion in the memoirs of Sir William Knighton, 1838. Martin Archer Shee was an Irish-born painter and writer. This play was first performed in 1824 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, London. Set in Poland, it centres on the character Alasco, a Polish nobleman involved in a dramatic struggle against tyranny, persecution, and oppression. The play is notable not just for its content but for the controversy surrounding its production. The Lord Chamberlain, who was responsible for licensing plays in Britain, initially refused to license this play for performance at Drury Lane Theatre due to its perceived political radicalism and revolutionary themes. This decision was likely influenced by the authorities' fear of plays that might incite unrest or challenge the established order, especially in the wake of the French Revolution and ongoing political agitation in Europe. The refusal to license Alasco sparked public debate about censorship and the limits of artistic expression. Eventually, the play was performed at Covent Garden after some changes were made to the text. The incident highlighted the tension between creative freedom and government control in the early 19th century. In summary, Alasco is remembered as a tragedy that became a symbol of the struggles over censorship and free expression in British theatre history.

The cover shows Don Quichotte waving to aeroplanes' wings, emblems of dread and aspiration alike. Although the Spanish civil war was still two years away, the image is very evocative of a squadron of bombers on their way to Guernica. Louis Icart's sole book, where the artist recasts Cervantes's Don Quixote as a dramatic play. In the climactic fifth act, the revived knight-errant mounts a crusade across France against modernity's vices: the gaudy worship of the Golden Calf, the idolatry of Mammon, and the dominion of the mean-spirited and base. The covers are in good condition, with a touch of edge wear, and a little creasing to the spine. Rubbing to the spine edges. Internally clean and tidy, with some darkening to the pages. Louis Icart (1888–1950) was primarily known as a French Art Deco painter, printmaker, and illustrator renowned for his glamorous etchings of elegant women.

Original soft covers are bound in. Publisher's vignette to the cover. The soft cover is repeated as the title page. 24 pages. 16cm x 8.5cm. In excellent condition. Next is a reprint edition of Gringoire comédie. This is not dated, but states Nouvelle Edition to the green paper covers. Published by Calmann Levy, with owner's name to the top of the covers and the half title pages. 68 pages. 18cm x 12cm. Both books are in excellent condition. The first is in fine condition, the second has a touch of edgewear to the paper cover with slight foxing, otherwise in fine condition. Book overall has a burgundy cloth spine with matching marbled boards and gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition with a touch of handling only. Book itself is 19cm x 13cm. Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) is today remembered more as a poet, but he was also passionate about the theatre, and influential in reviving French interest in the commedia dell'arte tradition, and the figure of Pierrot. Gringoire was his best known dramatic work. Eudore Cléaz is a short story that belongs to a collection of Banville's he called Esquisses parisiennes (Parisian Sketches).

L'ouvrage possède un dos en toile bordeaux avec des plats marbrés assortis et des titres dorés sur le dos. Il est en très bon état, ne présentant que de très légères traces d'usure. Le livre lui-même mesure 19 cm x 13 cm. Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) est aujourd'hui surtout connu comme poète, mais il était également passionné de théâtre et a joué un rôle influent dans le renouveau de l'intérêt français pour la tradition de la commedia dell'arte et le personnage de Pierrot. *Gringoire* est sa pièce la plus connue. *Eudore Cléaz* est une nouvelle qui fait partie d'un recueil de Banville intitulé *Esquisses parisiennes*.

This was Yeat's last play. In English it was called "The Herne's Egg", completed in 1938. The Encyclopeadie Brittanica calls it "his most raucous work" He died in 1939. 17cm x 13cm.

London: Mecca Ltd. First edition. A lovely copy of this 3D programme / Menu for the celebration of the 1963 awards, held on the 11th March 1963. The gold and pink pop up card features a representation of the award on the cover. inside is an illustrated design in gold white and pink. This has sections for the wine list, the evening menu and the programme. The award for Outstanding Instrumental Record for Dancing, was presented to Joe Loss. The poor chap, despite being the reward recipient, had provide two sets with his orchestra for "General dancing." The event was televised, and in a nice reversal, 45 minutes of the programme at the theatre was taken up with being filmed for the BBC. In excellent condition. There is a tiny line of loss to the pink where the 3-d cutting has affected it. Fractional creasing to folds in the pop up. Otherwise excellent. The Carl Alan Awards are presented by Theatre Dance Council International, which was founded in 1958 as a forum for the teachers of dance. The Awards are named after Carl Heimann and Alan B. Fairley, the joint chairmen of Mecca Dancing Ltd, and are regarded as 'the Oscars of the World of Dance'. Recipient Joe Loss was one of the most popular UK band leaders of the 20th century. In 1930 he formed his first professional band, which he continued to lead until 1990. In 1933, he made his first broadcast for the BBC. His recording career began the same year, working with artists like Vera Lynn and Chick Henderson. He was awarded the OBE for services to music in 1978. 21cm x 12.5cm closed.

Paris: Programme for one of the performances of l'École Nationale du Cirque in 1978. Featured artists include: contortionist Maria Negrea, acrobat Yves Oger, and of course Annie Fratellini herself. In the late 1970's, the French government had stepped in to try to help the ailing circus industry, and Annie Fratellini and Pierre Étaix had opened the l'École Nationale du Cirque. Sir John Vanbrugh was an English architect, perhaps best known as the designer of both Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard. However, it is with his work as a dramatist that he offended many sections of 18th century society, not only with the sexual explicitness of his plays, but also with their messages in defence of a woman's rights within marriage.

Genéve: S.A.D.A.G. A lovely French advertising programme for plays showing in February 1899. (Probably for a Paris theatre). The sheet, intended to be folded in half, has on the one side, a full page advert for "Un chapeau de Paille d'Italie" a comedie by Labiche. This is illustrated by Edmond Filliard. Black and white. To the other side of the sheet are two pieces. One is an advert for "Le Beau Léandre" by Banville (illustrated by Gill). The other is a poem, showing a poster man putting up an advert to a wall. This is also by Filliard, and has the only flash of colour to the sheet. A small text in red to the (presumably) rear panel, shows that the phototype was produced by S.A.D.A.G. of Geneva. (Société Anonyme des Arts Graphiques Genève). 41.5cm x 25.5cm. Single sheet. We cannot find copies of this ephemeral object.

Titles printed in red and black. The frontispieces show actors on stage and are unsigned. Historiated initials, headpieces and ornamental section breaks. Bound in full leather, the spines gilt in compartments with burgundy and black morocco labels, and gilt dentelles. ESTC T134816. Second edition, and the first under this title, of an anonymous anthology of dramatic extracts. It was first published in 1724 as Thesaurus Dramaticus and is here "continued down to the present year". The extracts are arranged alphabetically by subject, from Anger and Angels onwards, each attributed to its play and author, Dryden and Shakespeare prominent among them, as a commonplace book for readers, speakers and aspiring writers. A third edition, enlarged to three volumes, followed in 1756, and the work was reworked as The Beauties of the English Drama in 1777. Such compilations helped fix the canon of quotable English drama in the eighteenth century, and they show which passages readers of the day most admired. Printed by William Bowyer, whose ledgers record an edition of 1,000 copies. Few appear to survive in commerce, however: we can trace no other copy for sale and no auction record. Most institutional holdings recorded on WorldCat are digital surrogates rather than physical copies. Bindings slightly bumped, with minor loss of gilt and some surface wear, but sound. Internally clean, with minimal foxing. An earlier armorial bookplate in each volume has been covered by the front pastedown, and shows through faintly. A very good set.

London: Livermore and Robinson, 1876. A new revised edition of Croker's speeches on the inefficiency of actors on the Dublin stage. This edition is edited with notes and remarks by Walter Donaldson. To the front end paper is a lengthy gift inscription from Donaldson to Henry Poate Aslatt. He writes "Dublin is much advanced in buildings, but where are her land owner's now? Alas scattered in every country but their own". There is a second inscription from Henry Poate Aslatt (who also appears on the subscriber list) stating that the book was by his old Masonic friend, Donaldson. Green cloth with gilt titles. In slightly handled but overall very good condition. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Frontis portrait of the actress "Miss O'Neill." Henry Poate Aslatt was a prominent figure in Southampton, England, during the 19th century. He was the youngest son of John Aslatt, who founded Aslatt's Coach Factory in the early 19th century. Henry continued the family business into the 1890s, managing the coach works located on the corner of Above Bar and Aslatt's Cut in Southampton. Walter Alexander Donaldson, (1793-1877) also wrote "Recollections of an Actor" in 1865. 59 pages. 18.5cm x 12cm.

Il était le plus jeune fils de John Aslatt, qui avait fondé l'entreprise Aslatt's Coach Factory au début du XIXe siècle. Henry a poursuivi l'entreprise familiale jusque dans les années 1890, en dirigeant la fabrique de carrosses située à l'angle d'Above Bar et d'Aslatt's Cut à Southampton.
