(clean and tidy) The title page tp volume one is a little darkened with a corner mark, otherwise the text block is in excellent condition. Volume two is still in very good condition, but with a few foxing spots. A little worm damage to the last few pages of volume 2. with slight impact upon text. Unpaginated quarto edition. Also enclosed are a copy of Canon John Willis's address to the Johnson Society "Dr Johnson and his English Dictionary" 1948 24pp. And an advertising postcard from Scolar Press for a facsimile of the Journey to the Western Isles. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

New York: The Hispanic Society of America, 1967. A sound copy of this first edition, with photograph and signature / inscription of the author. Original burgundy dust wrapper, which has several closed tears to the front cover (one with repair). Otherwise clean. Burgundy cloth boards in good clean condition. Inside the book is clean and tidy throughout. The front end paper bears a photograph by the author giving a speech in 1969, there is also a written text from the author, with a typed copy - of this pasted above it. The author comments on the length of time that the book was delayed. To the title page, the publication date has been changed from 1967 to 1968 in the same hand - suggesting that the book was actually published in 1968. Colour frontis, and 60 black and white photographs of Spanish book bindings. The book bears the ex libris of J. Peeters Fontainas, the Dutch bibliographer and Spanish book expert / author. 18, [ii], LX (plates). pp 285 by 210mm (11¼ by 8¼ inches).

Ambroise Vollard (1866–1939) was a pioneering French art dealer, collector, publisher, and writer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the promotion of modern art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Vollard played a crucial role in shaping the careers of many now-renowned artists. He is credited with discovering and promoting figures such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Vincent van Gogh. His gallery on Rue Laffitte in Paris became a hub for avant-garde art exhibitions, hosting groundbreaking shows such as Cézanne's first major exhibition in 1895, Picasso's first solo exhibition in 1901, and Matisse's exhibition in 1904. This sale of his works (405 items sold over two days over two days in 1925) was a act of "downsizing" for Gide, prior to his leaving for the Congo in 1926. It also gave him an opportunity to settle scores with former friends, whose inscribed works he sold. The sale raised him 123,000 Francs (a little over €27,000 today). Original pale green paper covers. These have a touch of edgewear and have been reinforced with archival tape to the spine. Internally clean and tidy with slight darkening to the page edges only. 72 pages. 25cm x 17cm. Scarce in any format, but no other copies in original covers at the time of cataloguing.

The Ruggieri brothers were French pyrotechnic experts of the Eighteenth Century. The family assembled a collection of over 1500 books on the subject of festivals or fétes. Important as there is no standard bibliography of the subject. Here is the bibliography of this collection. Although a facsimile, this has additional author and title indexes making it more usable. A paper label shows that this copy was for Monsieur Pavet, and that he was to received a volume bound in half red leather and with papier Agathe (which this copy is). The majority of the catalogues were softback, so Monsieur Pavet must have been a valued customer.
American citizen, the owner of this collection, Mr. Benzon, ran the house of Naylor, Benzon & Cie in London. He died two years before his library went on sale. Many of the books he purchased were from the Henry Bordes collection, who wrote catalogue entries for much of this sale (signified by his initials after the entry). The sale comprised 400 items, and against each, is the price achieved (in pencil)

La plupart des livres qu'il a achetés provenaient de la collection Henry Bordes, qui a rédigé des entrées de catalogue pour une grande partie de cette vente (signifiées par ses initiales après l'entrée). La vente comprenait 400 articles, et contre chacun, est le prix atteint (au crayon)

The company had just received the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition of 1900, and the medal is shown to the front board. Clean green cloth, with gilt titles and decoration. This is a thick, heavy book (1345 pages) and the binding to the front hinge has become weakened. This has been repaired with archival tape, but is still delicate. There are eight photographic plates to the front of the catalogue, showing the factories of Down Brothers. Then are catalogued and described 8757 items of medical usage, with prices and for the majority with an engraved illustration. The pages are a little darkened, particularly to the page edges. An impressive catalogue of surgical instruments including aseptic hospital furniture and a large number of original models manufactured and sold by Down Bros. This is a library copy from the university of Montpelier, with small library stamps to each of the plates and the title page. 24.5cm x 17cm,. Première édition. Bel exemplaire de ce catalogue. La société venait de recevoir le Grand Prix à l'Exposition universelle de Paris en 1900, et la médaille est représentée sur la couverture. A guide to the jewellery, porcelain, chandeliers, lacquerware, bronzes, clocks, as well as full catalogues of paintings, drawings and prints. from the estate Quentin de Lorangere. Sadly, this copy was bound without two leaves (p131-134). We have supplied this in a good facsimile of the first edition (see photos) but these leaves are not original. Full leather binding with gilt details to the spine. Slightly rubbed, but in good, clean condition with title to leather label. Neat manuscript entry to the front end paper verso explaining the Callot entry. The book is in very nice, clean condition with a touch of darkening only. Alongside many of the entries are manuscript annotations in ink, with numbers. We assume that these are the prices reached at the auction. Fontispiece engraved by Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1688-1754) after Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils (1715-1790), depicting art lovers at the exhibition preceding a sale of paintings and drawings. "Table alphabetique" (96 p. at end) includes notes on the artists and their works. was compiled by Edme-François Gersaint, a prominent art dealer and author known for his expertise in prints and natural history specimens. Of importance are the significant sections of Callot (pages 49-130) and that on Watteau (pages 170-188). This latter is of particular historical interest, as it is the first biography of Watteau. Edmé-François Gersaint, a Parisian art dealer, knew Watteau personally in his final years. This text, titled Résumé de sa vie (Summary of His Life) is the introduction to the Watteau sale. 1 plate, XVIII-(4)- 130 [131-134 facsimile] 135-294 pp., 1 blank page, 96 pp. 16.5cm x 10cm.

A complete photographic catalogue of the books published by Diogenes with a photograph of the cover of each.We cannot find any copies of this online, so cannot find much history about it, but it is fascinating to anyone interested in bibliographical studies. Excellent condition. Fractional handling to the covers only - otherwise spotless to the glossy pages.
