The Gift of Life, OMK Page Edition. 'Operation Magic Kingdom' was a billboard and street poster campaign in London (2007) against the Iraq war. This was also released as stamps and prints. OMK blind stamped and hand numbered in pencil to front. Has official CNPD red stamp on verso. With 4 binding holes in the left hand margin. Dimensions: 35,8 cm x 30.5cm. Excellent condition. Currently protected in archival film. James (Jimmy) Cauty, was formerly a musician with the band 'The Orb', and was a member of 'KLF'. More recently, he has been an artist, creating works of dissent, and working alongside artists such as Banksy and Billy Childish. He has been involved in Steve Lowe's L-13 Light Industrial workshop. He created the gift shop at Banksy's 'Dismaland'. His work also toured as part of the ADP (Aftermath Dislocation Principle) Riot Tour.

Paris: Thierry Fréres, 1840. Pale blue boards, with buckram spine. Illustration of a Gothic chapel to the front board. The boards are a little marked and stained, particularly to the back board. Inside are 8 lithographs and an estate plan of Fraidaigue (or Fraid-augue). Fraidaigue (Route de Morges 21). This was a country house in the form of a neo-Gothic chapel built in 1831 for the Dutch-born general Hendryk van Oyen, who previously owned La Gordanne near Perroy. This building was replaced in 1904 by a wealthy villa designed by architects Alphonse Laverrière and Eugène Monod. The lithographs and map are in excellent condition. with a little foxing to the borders only. The plates are drawn from nature by Zélie Vachon. They are deliniated by Jean-Jacques Champin (1796 - 1860), and lithographed by Thierry frères of Paris. Copies of the lithographs are held in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de la Ville de Genève. Here they are dated to the first half of the Nineteenth Century. The house/ chapel was located just outside St Prex, on the Geneva-Lausanne road (now Route de Morges). 9 leaves, printed to recto only. One folding. 350 x 290 mm (13¾ x 11½ inches).

Tours: Maison Mame, 1933. A nice copy of this French A.B.C. with Job's delightful illustrations throughout. 54 pages. Second edition, identified by being "Maison Mame" rather than Alfred Mame et fils. Otherwise a faithful reproduction of the first edition. The boards are mainly clean, but have had some additional lines added by an owner at some point (not too damaging - see pics), and some rubbing to the edges. Internally in mainly good, clean and tidy condition, with nice lithographic illustration. The binding is slightly loose, but still holding together. 300 by 245mm (11¾ by 9¾ inches).

London: Darton and Harvey, 1805. First Edition. Two volumes bound as one. With titles, two engraved titles and 84 copper plate engravings (complete). The plates with decorative animal illustrations by J. Tookey after J. Ibbetson. Half calf binding with brown boards. The boards are somewhat stained. The binding is rubbed to the corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles to the spine are still attractive though. Has the ownership signature of G. Goldney, Buckfield to the front end paper. Small bookshop stamp of Paul A Struck of New York to the inside board. Some of the pages and plates have light water staining (a couple there is more distinct staining), and there is light foxing in places. Pages a touch darkened. Overall, a nice copy though. Unpaginated. Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), was a Yorkshire painter noted for his rural scenes and depictions of animals. This is the first printing of an important work of natural history, which was re-printed in 1848/9. 330 by 260mm (13 by 10¼ inches).

Berlin: NP, 1948. A pencil sketch showing a classical monument (which also shows similarity to a Chess Rook). It has the wreath of France to it. Towards the top, is the shining face of Hitler. To the bottom of the statue is a small, but obvious pile of excrement ! It is signed to the lower left corner. Held under Passe Partout. The sketch is good, in clean condition, with light creasing to it. 35.5cm x 24cm. The Passe Partout and frame are 38cm x 38.5cm. To the reverse of the sheet are several sketches and the name Bertrand Monnet. The sheet was obviously folded at some point. Held under glass in a simple wooden frame. Our belief is that the sketch was made whilst Monnet was the mission officer in the occupation zone immediately after the war.

Bertrand Jules Monnet, (1910-1989) was a Parisian architect, who qualified from the School of Fine Arts in 1939. He was particularly engaged as an architect of Historical Monuments. He was appointed Chief Architect of Historic Monuments in 1942 (This means that he was a member of Les Architectes en Chef des Monuments Historiques (ACMH) not THE chief architect). He was mission officer to the military government of the free zone of occupation in Germany in 1946-1949. On his return to France, he was architect for a number of prestigious buildings and was both Vice President and President of ACMH.

Vers le haut, on voit le visage brillant d'Hitler. Au bas de la statue se trouve un petit, mais évident, tas d'excréments ! Il est signé dans le coin inférieur gauche. Détenu sous Passe Partout. L'esquisse est en bon état, propre, avec de légers plis. 35,5 cm x 24 cm. Le Passe Partout et le cadre mesurent 38 cm x 38,5 cm. Au verso de la feuille figurent plusieurs croquis et le nom de Bertrand Monnet. La feuille a manifestement été pliée à un moment donné. Présenté sous verre dans un simple cadre en bois. Nous pensons que le croquis a été réalisé alors que Monnet était chargé de mission dans la zone d'occupation immédiatement après la guerre.

Bertrand Jules Monnet (1910-1989) était un architecte parisien, diplômé de l'École des beaux-arts en 1939. Il s'est particulièrement investi dans l'architecture des monuments historiques. Il est nommé architecte en chef des monuments historiques en 1942 (ce qui signifie qu'il est membre des Architectes en Chef des Monuments Historiques (ACMH) et non architecte en chef). Il a été chargé de mission auprès du gouvernement militaire de la zone libre d'occupation en Allemagne en 1946-1949. De retour en France, il a été architecte de nombreux bâtiments prestigieux et a été à la fois vice-président et président des ACMH.

France: na, 1910. An attractive bundle of 7 pages, with 17 sketches / vignettes in ink on them. Caricature sketches, showing: (1) Two elderly gentlemen conversing; (2) Two gentlemen in circa 1910 dress; (3) two sketches showing horse riders and a small Chinese caricature; (4) A collection of soldiers, a gentleman frog, and a frog talking to a duck; (5) An anthropomorphic bakery and knights entering a forest; 6) a sailor ?; (7) Three Beatrix Potter style rabbit sketches. All of the caricatures are on pages removed from a sketch book. These are somewhat darkened. There is a little edgewear and nicking to the sheets. Sheet are various sizes, but mostly 200 by 120mm (7¾ by 4¾ inches).

1903. Four documents concerned with the Paddington Estate in West London. The monks of Westminster had land in Paddington from the 11th Century. After the Reformation, these rested with the Bishop of London. From the late 19th Century, these were gradually sold of through holding companies, the last being sold in the 1980's. These documents comprise: July 1903 - A counterpart licence for 14 Cleveland Square with permissions to renovations and changes to the property. 4 pages. April 1913 - A counterpart licence to add a garage for private motor cars to 7 Chilworth Mews. 3 pages and a large drawn handcoloured architectural plan of the front of the building and ground floor (on glassine). July 1926 - A licence and deed of covenant to turn 40 Cleveland Square into 3 maisonettes. 12 pages. plus a large folding architectural plan of the proposed changes, with seals and tagged seal. February 1929 - A lease from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to A. H. Heath for a lease on 110 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington. 6 pages and glassine coloured plan of property. A nice bundle of London related legal documents.

New York: N/A, 1900. A lovely collection of seven ink and water-colour designs by Ledonné, which were part of his submission for the "Designing" certificate from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Together with a printed and embossed certificate from the college. The sheets comprise: "Tuscan Order Cap and Entablature" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Pedestal and Base" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Capital and Entablature" Dec. 1899; "Ionic Order Capital and Entablature" Jan. 1900; "Ionic Order Pedestal and Base" Feb. 1900; "Corinthian Order Capital and Entablature" April 1900; and a "Study of Corinthian Temple" Jan. 1901. Each of the sheets is approximately 49 x 37 cm. They are all in good, clean condition, but some have a little marking / foxing to one edge. A touch of creasing to a couple of corners. All are of an excellent standard, and suitable for framing. The Cooper Union was founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, in New York in 1858 (according to certificate, 1859 according to their website) and still exists today. The certificate, with an attractive engraved vignette of the Great Hall of the college. It is signed by both the director and the president of the college in ink, and has a blind stamped embossed seal. It shows that Ledonné was enrolled in the Free Night School, and presumably in an Architecture School (although this topic was called designing). We can find little about Ledonné. A Frenchman, he was in America between 1899 and 1903, and later returned to France and worked as a draughtsman or architect under the architect Eugené Dr Chifflot (Brother of Jules Léon Chifflot).

London: Simpkin & Marshall, 1836. First English Edition. Attractive contemporary full leather green binding with profuse gilt decoration to the spine and boards. A little rubbing but still in good condition. Marbled end papers. There is a prize inscription from Spitalfield School of Design from May 1843 to the end paper. On the second end paper is a large gift inscription giving the book to a young boy on his 12th birthday. The rest of the work is in good, clean condition, with a light darkening / foxing only. Attractive engraved frontis of a perspective view of Greenwich Hospital from across the Thames. A Further 24 folding plates showing a total of 168 different figures demonstrating aspects of Perspective. 210 by 140mm (8¼ by 5½ inches). xiv, 152, XXIV. pp.

English edition of "Essai de perspective pratique pour rectifier les compositions et dessiner d'après nature" (Paris 1828). - The French Painter JP Thénot (1803-1857) was the most famous drawing teacher in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. His textbook "Les regles de la perspective " was also highly valued by Paul Cezanne, as evidenced by his recently discovered copy with numerous handwritten annotations by Cezanne.

Édition anglaise de "Essai de perspective pratique pour rectifier les compositions et dessiner d'après nature" (Paris 1828). - Le peintre français JP Thénot (1803-1857) était le plus célèbre professeur de dessin à Paris au début du 19e siècle. Son manuel « Les règles de la perspective » était également très apprécié par Paul Cézanne, comme en témoigne son exemplaire récemment découvert avec de nombreuses annotations manuscrites de Cézanne.

London: 1830. A lovely hand coloured military plate from Meyrick's critical inquiry. This is plate 46 XLVI. We are unsure whether this is from the 1824 first edition or the 1842 second. Hence the approximate date of 1830. The hand coloured image is clean and bright, with a little foxing only. It is held under a hand made passe partout, showing the English Red Rose to each corner. Plate dimensions 30.5cm x 25cm to a sheet of 36.5cm x 26.5cm. Passe partout is slightly darkened but in a good state. 44.5cm x 38cm. An attractive example of this plate.

Nous ne savons pas si elle provient de la première édition de 1824 ou de la seconde de 1842. D'où la date approximative de 1830. L'image colorée à la main est propre et brillante, avec seulement quelques rousseurs. Elle est maintenue sous un passe partout fait à la main, montrant la rose rouge anglaise à chaque coin. Les dimensions de la plaque sont de 30,5 cm x 25 cm pour une feuille de 36,5 cm x 26,5 cm. Le passe partout est légèrement assombri mais en bon état. 44.5cm x 38cm. Un bel exemple de cette plaque.

A very nice copy - recently bound in quarter calf with burgundy label and marbled boards. Recent end papers. The rest of the book is original and complete. This is an ex library copy, but the stamps are not too disfiguring. A stamp and a couple of location records to the title page. Otherwise some small stamps to the verso of plates. A few of the pages have minor nicking to the edges - but well away from the text. Slight browning to the pages. Overall though, a good clean copy, with nice clear and well pressed engravings in a flawless binding. The first part of the work (Guillim's) contains hundreds of examples of Arms throughout the text. The second part (the Analogia Honorum) contains two engraved dedications, 9 full page portraits and 105 engraved plates containing hundreds of Arms and honours. All uncoloured.

na, 1870. First edition. A beautifully executed water colour of a peasant wearing a bonnet and clogs. The colours are vibrant, and the artist demonstrates an obvious skill. The peasant reminds me of how my grandfather would have looked in a dress and bonnet. Held in a green and gold passe partout behind class, and in a contemporary frame with attractive leaf motif around the black frame. There is some chipping and handling to the edges of the frame. The clothes are typical of a mid to late Nineteenth century peasants clothing. The clogs in particular, are the distinctive French style with the leather strap across. Image size 135 x 90 mm. Passe partout size 190 x 140 mm. Frame size 240 x 190 mm.

A lovely collection of portraiture. Wrapper is near perfect (tiny nick to the top edge of wrapper). Book is immaculate. 216 pages. 31cm x 24cm.

Date of publication from British Museum catalogue. Plate numbered "295" in upper right corner. Plate from: Woodward, G.M. Caricature magazine, or Hudibrastic mirror. London : Thomas Tegg, [1808?], v. 4. Also issued separately. Visible plate: 26.5cm x 36.5cm. Frame: 43cm x 52cm. The plate is a little darkened, and with a couple of very light creases to the corner. But the hand colouring is very good, and the plate still worthy of display. Frame is a little dated, and with slight handling, but sound. Can be shipped without frame if required. "A grotesque old doctor, with carbuncled nose, approaches a lady, bowing low and holding out a clumsy petticoat. He says: "Mrs Jenny said your Ladyship complain'd of being cold about the loins - so I have Just stept in with a warm flannel petticoat." She is seated beside a tea-table, and throws up her arms, flinching back in horror; she says: "I have no loins fellow! do you want to make a monster of me?!!" She wears a high-waisted, short-sleeved dress, under which her legs are defined. Her little dog barks at the doctor. A large urn and a small cup (overturned) and saucer, are the only objects on the table." (British Museum online catalogue).

La plaque est un peu assombrie et présente quelques plis très légers dans le coin. Mais la coloration à la main est très bonne et l'assiette est encore digne d'être exposée. Le cadre est un peu daté et a subi de légères manipulations, mais il est en bon état. Peut être expédié sans cadre si nécessaire. "Un vieux médecin grotesque, avec un nez en escarboucle, s'approche d'une dame en s'inclinant et en lui tendant un jupon maladroit. Il dit : "Mme Jenny a dit que Madame se plaignait d'avoir froid aux reins - je viens donc d'apporter un jupon de flanelle chaud." Elle est assise à côté d'une table à thé et lève les bras en arrière, frémissant d'horreur ; elle dit : "Je n'ai pas de reins, mon ami ! Voulez-vous faire de moi un monstre ?!!" Elle porte une robe à taille haute et à manches courtes, sous laquelle ses jambes se dessinent. Son petit chien aboie contre le médecin.
