Paris: France Soir, 1945. First edition / Original items A very nice photograph from the trial of Pétain and Laval. We cannot find any copy online of this press photograph having been used at the time. The trial of Philippe Pétain was among the most significant political events in post-World War II France, resulting in a conviction for treason due to his role in the Vichy regime and collaboration with Nazi Germany. The original silver gelatin press photograph was for use in France Soir* and has the newspaper stamp to the rear. The image shows trial judge André Ausset speaking at the trial of Pétain. 18cm x 23.5cm.

(*Libé Soir was a French newspaper, often linked with the Resistance during World War II, but it ceased publication in April 1947. After the liberation it transitioned into France Soir). Philippe Pétain, Marshal of France and leader of the Vichy government, was tried for treason in 1945, accused of betraying France by signing the armistice with Germany, refusing to move the government to North Africa, collaborating with the Nazis, and failing to resist German demands. The trial was dramatic and controversial, with public passions running high and a lack of clarity over what legally constituted treason given the extraordinary circumstances of the occupation. Pétain was convicted and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to his age and prior military service. André Mornet was the General Prosecutor at the 1945 trials of key Vichy regime figures, including Laval and Pétain. He was a French magistrate who served at a high level before the Vichy government but later became a resistance member from 1943. At the trials he strongly pursued death sentences, famously delivering forceful and unyielding requisitions condemning them for treason and collaboration with the Germans. His prosecutorial style at these trials was marked by his call for a "sacred hatred" against the accused, emphasising their betrayal of France.

Paris: Bloch-Laine, 1991. First edition. A large black and white photograph by the celebrated photographer Jean-Louis Bloch-Lainé. It is signed to the rear, with the note "Monaco". It portrays the large hall of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco The image itself is clean and neat, but the white surround has some staining to it. This could be hidden with mounting. Now presented under a temporary passe partout. Image is 20cm x 30cm. Sheet is 30cm x 41cm. Jean-Louis Bloch-Lainé is a distinguished French photographer celebrated for his editorial, artistic, and documentary photography. His extensive career, spanning from the early 1960s onward, has influenced French visual culture in both fashion and fine art contexts. He began his work with Elle magazine in 1963. He is particularly known for his culinary photographs.

London: N/A, 1954. Beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The attendees captured here include H.R.H. Princess Margaret, The Duke & Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke and Duchess of Kent. Landscape album 246 by 307mm (9¾ by 12 inches). 4 blank leaves, 2 titles (printed in red and black). 28 black and white silver gelatin prints (193x245 mm) mounted on 14 leaves. A further 4 leaves of blanks to the rear. Full morocco binding titled in gold on the first cover in a double frame of gilt fillets, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, gilt fillets on the cuts, interior border highlighted with gilt fillets, binding signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London. A little bumping to the corners. Slight handling to the binding only. An inscription has been scratched away on a front end paper. Still a lovely copy. The first 14 photos document the visit of Princess Margaret who was then 24 years old, the next 6 photos concern the Princess and the Duke of Gloucester, the last 8 photos the Duchess of Kent (Princess Marina) and her eldest son (Now Prince Edward, Duke of Kent). Single album, or produced in a very few copies. Although this is a private collection, the indications are that it was produced by press photographers from the Daily Mail. To the title page, the address is Northcliffe House, London. EC4 - which was the headquarters of the Daily Mail at the time. A couple of the photographs can be identified as being used in the press at the time. Also identified in the pictures are Philip Rosenthal, of Rosenthal Porzellan, Germany. Lord Rothermere, Mr Stokes (The organiser of the exhibition).

Anhée Wallonia, Belgium: Abbaye de Maradsous, 1885. First edition. Complete. A collection of 20 large albumen photographs laid onto backing card with description of each printed to the bottom edge, showing the Abbaye de Maredsous and the Ecole Abbataile. These are held in a red clamshell box with black and gilt decoration, crest and titles. The box has significant fading / spotting from damp, but is still holding well, and has done its job of protecting the photographs inside. The photographs are of high quality, and show the building of the abbey and the new school there. They are dated by the fact that the school was founded in 1881 (earliest date) and that the the Abbey was completed in 1892, but in these images is still some way off completion. Interesting architectural prints, but also of the students and staff at the school, both being educated and relaxing. A very nice collection. Images are mostly 17cm x 24cm and backing cards are 25cm x 32cm. Box is 35cm x 27cm.

Paris: Société des eaux minérales de Vittel, 1937. First Edition. Publisher binding of artificial crocodile / snakeskin. Framed with double gilt fillets on the front board. Brown cloth spine. Clean and tidy boards with just a little marking to the rear board. The book has been bound with three staples, and this has broken open to the title page, so although the binding is firm, it falls open to the title (see photograph). Pages are clean but the title is a little darkened. Otherwise in very good condition. After a photograph of the Comité de L'Internat (with the member's names below) there follows 29 hospitals visited. For each, there is a photograph of the interns / hospital staff with names. There is also one or more photographs of the hospitals / staff often in amusing poses or in amusing situations. A rare item. Vittel is a French bottled mineral water company. Founded in 1854, for many years, the company focussed on the curative effects of mineral water. 22.5cm x 31cm.

Les planches sont propres et bien rangées, avec juste une petite marque sur la planche arrière. Le livre a été relié avec trois agrafes, et celles-ci se sont brisées à la page de titre, donc bien que la reliure soit ferme, elle s'ouvre à la page de titre (voir la photographie). Les pages sont propres mais le titre est un peu assombri. L'ouvrage est par ailleurs en très bon état. Après une photographie du Comité de L'Internat (avec les noms des membres en dessous) suivent 29 hôpitaux visités. Pour chacun d'eux, il y a une photographie des internes / du personnel hospitalier avec leurs noms. Il y a aussi une ou plusieurs photographies des hôpitaux / du personnel souvent dans des poses amusantes ou dans des situations amusantes. Un objet rare. Vittel est une société française d'eau minérale embouteillée. Fondée en 1854, la société s'est longtemps concentrée sur les effets curatifs de l'eau minérale. 22,5 cm x 31 cm.

Paris: de Neurdein Fréres, C 1875. First edition. A very nice original albumen image of the hall of mirrors in the Palace of Versaille. A large print: 27.5cm x 42cm. Overall in excellent condition, bar a couple of light creases, and a 3cm closed tear to the bottom edge. There are quite a few photographs of the hall, but this one is identifiable by the double bench arrangement to the left of the print. We can find this in no other photograph. The photograph was also produced as a postcard. Blank, and clean to the verso. As with all albumen images, this is on very thin photographic paper.

Dans l'ensemble en excellent état, avec quelques plis légers et une déchirure de 3 cm sur le bord inférieur. Il existe de nombreuses photographies de la salle, mais celle-ci est identifiable par la double disposition des bancs à gauche de l'épreuve. Nous ne retrouvons cela sur aucune autre photographie. Cette photographie a également été produite sous forme de carte postale. Elle est vierge et propre au verso. Comme toutes les images à l'albumine, celle-ci est réalisée sur un papier photographique très fin.

An adult in a white robe watches the children in the foreground, with a young child in similar robe facing them. Palm trees and dust road in the background. The children seem too young to be in school. An attractive albumen image. Slightly faded, but overall in good condition. H265mm x 210mm. On green backing card 430 x 350 mm. A little darkened and bumped but still in good state.

Un peu assombri et bosselé mais toujours en bon état.

Christopher Makos was Warhol's personal photographer and these images document a visit to China in the early 1980s, when the artist's work was not so well known. 86 pages. 375 x 260 mm (14¾ x 10¼ inches). Première édition. Tissu rouge avec photo de Warhol collée sur la première page. En très bon état. Avec des photographies en noir et blanc. Texte en anglais et en chinois. August Sander (1876–1964) was a pioneering German photographer renowned for his profound influence on both documentary and portrait photography. Sander is best known for his ambitious, decades-long project "People of the Twentieth Century" (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts), in which he sought to create a comprehensive visual record of German society by photographing individuals from all social classes and professions during the Weimar Republic era and beyond.

Original softcover, 256 pages with 60 black-and-white illustrations based on photographs on art paper. Red buckram and marbled boards with black leather label and gilt titles to spine. The binding is fractionally tight, but still perfectly readable. Original soft covers are bound in. Internally clean and tidy but slightly darkened. In fact there are 55 photographs, and 5 black and white illustrations, bringing the total to 60. 254. [vi]. pages. Nice copy. 19cm x 14cm

Held in a folding cover. Cover is ornately decorated to the front and blind embossed to the rear. Clean and tidy with fractional darkening. Inside, the flaps are a pale grey and also blind stamped. Slight marking where a paper clip (now gone) has been holding something. Inside are a title and 12 cards. The title has the the list of photographs to the rear. Schwind, the Romantic, was himself devoted with all his soul to the sister art; Not only did he like to practise, his whole being was absorbed in music. The laws of beauty seemed to him to be fulfilled more nobly than in the works of contemporary visual art in the classical musical compositions of Mozart and Beethoven, with whom he was well acquainted. What he sought there in vain: depth of feeling, clarity of expression, nobility of form, here he found it expressed. Schwind was influenced by his circle of friends with and around Franz Schubert and Franz von Schober. He took part in the "Schubertiades" (1821-1828), belonged to a reading society founded in 1822, whose members gave themselves names from the Nibelungenlied - Schubert was called "Volker the Singer" and Schwind "Giselher the Child" because of his youth - and repeatedly illustrated the same originals "that had also inspired his friend Schubert to musical utilisation" (e.g. Goethe's ballads "An Schwager Kronos", "Der Erlkönig", "Der Schatzgräber").

San Francisco: Chronicle Books LLC, 2006. Stated first edition. A tribute in photographs to the Blythe dolls of Marvin Glass. Part photo-book, part fashion photographs, Garan has documented her love of these commercially unpopular 1970's dolls. Each doll is pictured as if in a fashion shoot, complete with hair and clothing credits. Clean and tidy softback. Unpaginated but 156 pages. Mostly full page colour photographs of the dolls in different styles and outfits. 30cm x 21cm. A nice copy, a couple of pages have very light creasing to the edges.
