Then there are further, intermittent foxing spots - but not too much. This set was limited to 1000 (unnumbered copies).
This is an exact reprint of the edition of 1617 with printing errors corrected and letters altered to conform with modern usage, and with the addition of an index. The first volume contains a large fold-out facsimile of the original title page and a fold-out facsimile of the Priviledge of Copyright, both in excellent, pristine condition. The other volumes have numerous fold out facscimile engravings - particularly with maps and battle plans of the Irish Rebellion, which takes up much of the third volume.
Moryson pretty much invented the post-university Grand Tour that became a necessary rite of passage for generations after him. As well as documenting "all things there worthy to be seen" he also writes in fine detail of the practical concerns of travelling in his time, which paints a vivid portrait that virtually invites the reader along for the journey. This very nicely printed four volume set was the first full publication of Moryson's Itinerary since its original publication in 1617.
Moryson was the son of Thomas Moryson, a Lincolnshire gentleman who had been member of parliament for Grimsby in Lincolnshire. Fynes Moryson was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and after graduating he gained a fellowship for further study there. From May 1591 to May 1595 Moryson travelled round Continental Europe for the specific purpose of observing local customs, institutions, and economics. He took written notes. From early 1596 to mid-1597, he journeyed to Jerusalem, Tripoli, Antioch, Aleppo, Constantinople, and Crete, for the same purpose. In 1600, Moryson was appointed personal secretary to Lord Mountjoy, who was the head of government and commander-in-chief of the crown army in Ireland, then fighting against Tyrone's Rebellion. When the rebellion ended in 1603, Moryson and Mountjoy both returned to England. Moryson remained Mountjoy's secretary until Mountjoy's death in 1606.
225 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches).

There appear to have been two versions printed. This version - which was the engravings only, There was also another version, printed simultaneously, with letterpress text to one leaf to accompany the smaller engravings (they are about half the size of our engravings). This latter published by Harper & Co. Original paper covered boards. These have black text within a decorated border, and red leather spine. The boards are somewhat rubbed, and have staining to them (particularly the front board). Still sturdy though. Title page, 12 double leaf plates with blank reverse. These are still very attractive, but have some water staining to the edges - particularly of the later pages. This is faded a little, and does not really affect the plates. Conforms to OCLC: 181773865 which FirstSearch records only one library copy at McMaster in California. The original paintings have been attributed to Pierre-Antoine Demachy (1723-1807) left a large number of views of Paris, and who showed a particular interest in Napoleon's major architectural improvements. 430 by 380mm (17 by 15 inches). 430 x 380 mm.

The February flood of 1825, also known in Germany as the Great Hallig Flood (Große Halligflut), was a devastating flood that occurred from 3 to 5 February 1825 on the North Sea coast, in which about 800 people were drowned.
In the Netherlands, the February flood was the worst natural disaster of the 19th century. Most of the dead and the worst damage was in Groningen, Friesland and Overijssel. The reaction at national level was quite similar to that during the flood of 1953; yet the event was surprisingly quickly forgotten once the damage had been repaired and had no political or engineering consequences. It needed the disaster of 1953 in order for a delta law to be passed and to improve coastal protection significantly.
