These fabulous illustrations, were created by Lesueur and Alaux between 1826 and 1828. Lithography by Godefroy Engelmann. They were originally gathered in a portfolio of 14 plates (according to FirstSearch - some sources state 15 but may be including a title). They seem to have been issued uncoloured, and we have seen no original plates offered with hand colouring. Each plate was presented with an engraved view of a roman antiquity or scene, and then several lines of small text in French below. (There was a 20th Century uncoloured reproduction but this is without the text). Here we offer five of the plates. Each has the contemporary hand colouring, and is framed and glazed with passe partout and a more recent simple gilt frame. Here the views have a visible area of 47cm x 31cm, beneath a passe partout of 49cm x 59cm, and held within a frame of 53cm x 62cm. The passe partout has a very slight wave to each plate, otherwise they are in fine condition. The five views are: Colonne élevée á L'Empereur Phocas (1826), good clean condition; Temple de Mars-Vengeur (1826) very good clean condition, with a few very light foxing spots to the text area; Vue du Capitole (1827) in excellent clean condition; Vue du Portique d'Octavie (No date), good clean condition; and Vue du Forum Trajan (1828) In excellent condition. This is the only picture which is horizontal rather than vertical. Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839): Lithographer printer, painter, designer and inventor. From Mulhouse, he was a prolific publisher; Jean-Paul Alaux (1788-1858) from Bordeaux, was a lithographer and painter who specialised in landscape and antique views; Jean-Baptiste-Cicéron Lesueur (1794-1883) was primarily a French architect, but spent some time studying the ancient architecture of Rome and collaborated with Alaux on this project. The Parisian publishing house of the brother photographers Étienne and Louis-Antonin Neurdein (1846–1914) was founded in Paris ca. 1885 and published postcards marked with an ND logo. However, Étienne already had begun publishing postcards in 1875 under the firm name Neurdein et Cie (founded by Étienne in 1864.) In 1887, both brothers ran the company, which was known as Neurdein Frères and as ND. Phot. beginning in 1906. In 1915, the name became Neurdein, and then again, from 1916 to 1918, Neurdein & Cie. The Neurdein company was the largest French publisher of postcards of the time. By the turn of the century, they were being funded by the French government to produce images and postcards of Algeria in order to promote colonial tourism and stimulate private investment. Amsterdam: Wed. Aart Dirksz. Oossaan, 1694. A lovely copper plate engraving of the Wester Kerk. Printed on two sheets, pasted together. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition

Une grande impression, que l'on croit provenir de la grande copie papier de la Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, l'ouvrage fondamental de Commelin. Bonne impression propre sur un papier vergé épais et propre. Le papier contient un filigrane de trois croissants de lune. Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.

Hardback in red buckram, with gilt title and decoration to front board and spine. Boards are slightly darkened and lightly soiled. Back board more so, as it has a dark patch to the lower portion; this does not affect the interior. Spine is rubbed. Inside FFEP has a neat ink hand written prize dedication from a Protestant church in North Holland. Tiny portion of top right corner of the end paper has been neatly cut out. Pages are aged at edges, from handling. There are some signs of handling / finger marks inside, but overall the book is in good condition. 136 pp., [4] hand coloured plates, each with tissue guard. Le dos est frotté. L'intérieur de la page de garde comporte une dédicace manuscrite à l'encre d'une église protestante de Hollande du Nord. Une petite partie du coin supérieur droit de la page de garde a été soigneusement découpée. Les pages sont vieillies sur les bords, à cause de la manipulation.
