London: Chatto & Windus, 1880. A very nice First Edition of this two volume selection of Rowlandson's work.Half red leather over red buckram boards. The leather is bright and profusely decorated in gilt. The boards are a little rubbed and have moderate marking to them. An attractive set. Armourial bookplates to the inside board of each volume. Volume two has splitting to the front hinge with some loss of end paper surface, but still holding well. Both volumes have light to moderate foxing to them. A "biographical sketch" of Rowlandson is followed by a detailed chronological study of his caricatures. There is a useful "chronological summary of subjects, social and political caricatures, engraved by or after Thomas Rowlandson" An essential addition to any Rowlandson collection. xv, 378., xi, 454 pp. 290 by 230mm (11½ by 9 inches).

Les planches sont un peu frottées et portent des marques modérées. Un ensemble attrayant. Un ex-libris armorié figure à l'intérieur de chaque volume. Le volume 2 présente une fissure à la charnière avant avec une perte de la surface du papier de fin, mais il tient encore bien. Les deux volumes présentent des rousseurs légères à modérées. Une "esquisse biographique" de Rowlandson est suivie d'une étude chronologique détaillée de ses caricatures. Nantes: Maison Turcaud, 1905. A pink silk menu, with an attractive stitched design to the top third, and a menu printed in brown to the bottom two thirds. The stitched design shows an art nouveau image with a woman with a headpiece surrounded by bunches of flowers. The menu is in a poor condition, with a little fraying to the left edge, but more importantly, has a split to the middle where the item has been folded. A few small marks and stains. Still attractive. 290 by 90mm (11½ by 3½ inches).

Shanghai: Huahe, 1932. First edition. This appears to be a deluxe edition for the home market as captions are written in both Japanese and English. The binding is in snakeskin, (probably faux snakeskin), with purple ribbon binding intact. Japanese titles to the outside and image of soldiers helmet and straw hat. 2 red & black maps, (one of Cha-Pei & one entitled "map of Sino-Japanese distuarbances (sic), Shanghai") + 48 pp. of black and white photographs depicting the Japanese invasion of Shanghai. Captions are in Japanese and English. Overall in excellent condition. There is a tiny loss to the top and bottom edge of the spine. Very small split to the binding edge. A couple of marks to the cover - but overall in excellent condition. London: William Miller, 1807. First Edition. Three quarter leather binding with gilt titles to the spine. Marbled boards. A little rubbing to the boards and spine. Engraved title and sixteen hand coloured plates (including a final folding plate). There is a blank between each plate, but in this copy there are NO text pages. The plates are pretty clean, with nice hand colouring, but with light creasing to most of the plates. Marbled end papers. Engraved title, 16 plates and 16 blank leaves. 155 by 200mm.

Barcelona: Luis de Caralt, 1970. Author's own copy! First Spanish language version. Signed by the author to the dedication page. In publisher's red cloth with dust jacket as issued. Book is a little dusty, and the dust jacket a little rubbed, but this was Leslie Thomas's own book and was signed in front of us before we purchased it. 254 pages. 200 x 140 mm (7¾ x 5½ inches). ¡Copia del autor! Primera versión en idioma español. Firmado por el autor en la página de dedicatoria. En tela roja del editor con sobrecubierta tal como se emitió. London: J. Phillips, 1788. New Edition (Second British Edition). Recent quarter leather with marbled boards. Gilt titles. New end papers. Half title, title, contents, biography of author, introduction and text. To the end there is a leaf of adverts on the subject of slavery from Phillips. In very nice condition. The quarter calf is clean and tidy, with just a touch of handling. The edges of the marbled boards are slightly rubbed, but overall in very good clean condition. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of foxing to the pages.
An important early American publication against the slave trade. Benezet (1713-1784) was born in Picardy, France. His family moved to London following the edict of Nantz, which was against Protestants in France. The family moved to Philadelphia in 1731, and shortly after he converted to Quakerism. He is described in the Library Company Afro- Americana catalogue (Item 44) as "the colonial anchor-man of the Anglo- American anti-slavery axis." Benezet worked ceaselessly to have slavery abolished by the colonial legislatures, and corresponded with Granville Sharp, one of the most important English abolitionists. 131 + advert leaf pp. Nouvelle édition (deuxième édition britannique). London: Griffith & Farran, 1865. Fourth edition (published in the first year as the First Edition) of this scarce work debunking Spiritualism and those who claimed to see ghosts. Through the use of 16 illustrations (13 hand coloured) the author shows how the illusion of seeing a ghost can be created. The "List of Plates" identifies what colour illusion a plate will create. "Plate II. this black figure will give a white spectre." etc. Blue boards with text (in ten different fonts !!) and a spectral figure looking particularly Scrooge Like floating across the front board. The rear board has adverts for Griffith and Farran books recently published. Red cloth spine. A touch of darkening and some rubbing (with two areas of loss to the rear panel). A couple of creases and edgewear to the boards. Title page has a small closed tear (repaired with archival tape). The rest of the book is clean, with a little handling to the pages. A small An attractive copy of a scarce work. 11, XVI. pp. 250 by 200mm (9¾ by 7¾ inches).

London: Collins, 1936. A decent copy of this first edition. Green cloth boards, with some fading and a little staining to the covers. Faded spine and slight bumping. A little foxing throughout, but the plates, on shiny art paper are in good condition. 6 colour plates and 6 monochrome illustrations. By sport, Edwards mainly means horse riding and hunting. Owner's inscription to the front end paper, for Darjeeling in August 1943 - in the midst of war! 98 pages. 320 by 255mm (12½ by 10 inches).

Worms: NSDAP, 1932. First edition. A small advertising ticket / flyer for a speech by Adolf Hitler held in the football stadium at Worms on Saturday 12 June 1932. This small ticket is based upon a larger poster by R. Sch, printed by gebruder Hoffman of Worms. This is printed on heavy recycled paper stock. Clearly printed, and cut with a serrated edge (or perhaps torn from a larger perforated sheet?). 70 by 100mm (2¾ by 4 inches). Very good, clean condition with no significant marks. A tiny hole just in from the right edge (perhaps a printing flaw?) A rare piece of ephemera, we can find no other copies for sale. Hitler spoke before 30,000 people on this, his only visit to Worms. The football stadium was originaly called the "Wormatia Stadium" but was henceforth (after 1933) proudly called the "Adolf Hitler Stadium" (or later the "Kampfbahn").
