Raymond Haasen (1911-1983), was a master printer, painter and engraver, son of the intaglio printer Paul Haasen. He was active in Paris between 1920 and 1944. R. Haasen produced, among other things, the etchings for the covers of the two volumes of La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Chagall (Vollard, 1952) as well as thirty-nine etchings for Chagall's Bible produced between 1952 and 1956…

Sur papier d'art filigrané de haute qualité. En état impeccable. Vierge au verso. La surface imprimée est de 24.5cm x 32.5cm, la feuille est de 39cm x 54.5cm. Raymond Haasen (1911-1983) était un maître imprimeur, peintre et graveur, fils de l'imprimeur en taille-douce Paul Haasen. Il a travaillé à Paris entre 1920 et 1944. R. Haasen a réalisé, entre autres, les eaux-fortes des couvertures des deux volumes des Fables de La Fontaine illustrées par Chagall (Vollard, 1952) ainsi que trente-neuf eaux-fortes pour la Bible de Chagall réalisées entre 1952 et 1956 (Vollard, 1956).

La jaquette présente une perte en haut et en bas du dos, ainsi qu'un assombrissement modéré. Elle est protégée par un film d'archivage. Le livre lui-même présente quelques frottements en haut et à la base du dos. L'intérieur est généralement très propre, mais le bord supérieur des premières pages et le bord inférieur de la page fermée sont endommagés par la fumée. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un exemplaire très utilisable, rehaussé par la signature de l'auteur. Nombreux fac-similés et illustrations tout au long de l'ouvrage. Peut-être le plus important des trois volumes, car il contient le texte de nombreuses lettres qui n'avaient pas été reproduites auparavant. 280 x 210 mm

What is interesting with this copy is that the portrait of John Drinkwater bears his signature and the words "Seal Chart September 1921." A nice clean copy of this book. A little darkening and rubbing to the spine and boards. Internally clean, with a few light foxing spots only. To the inside board is the bookplate for "Chart Lodge." Chart Lodge refers to a property located in Seal Chart, near Sevenoaks in Kent, hence Drinkwater's annotation. Attractive reproductions of portraits and sketches by Rothnstein throughout.
