London: Frederick Warne & Co, c1880. First Edition. Nice copy of this illustrated natural history book for children, with chromo-lithographic plates. Hardback, pictorial boards and red cloth spine. The boards are in good, clean condition with a little rubbing to them. Complete with 15 full-page chromo plates. It looks as if the book has been skilfully repaired at some point, as it has new white end papers, and one plate has some edge darkening and is trimmed fractionally short. Overall, in good, clean condition, with some foxing and darkening only. Nice copy. 34.5cm x 25.5cm. 64pp.

New York: John McLoughlin, C 1850. First edition. Undated but before the McLoughlin Brothers imprint (see below). An acceptable only copy. Crudely sewn binding with the first and last image providing the covers (not unusual for these early McLoughlins, we have seen several examples similarly stitched). The front cover is a little darkened but overall in decent condition. Including the covers, there are 8 pages of hand coloured woodcut images with text beneath. (complete). These pages are in fairly good condition, with just a little darkening, and a touch of shaking. The binding is in danger of separating with the spine edge splitting. The hand colouring is attractively done. 18.5cm x 11.5cm.

. John McLoughlin was a Scottish-born coach maker who became a prominent figure in the New York publishing industry during the 19th century. He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.

New York: Basilius Presse / Universe Books Inc, 1967. A nice copy of this leporello / folding story depicting The Ugly Duckling. Text in English, German and French to the rear. The whole work is intended to be viewed as a panel lithograph. The colophon states that this is a first edition and was an original lithograph by the Emil Matthieu Studio in Zurich. There is a small hook to the work which allows it to be hung up as a work of art. The boards are a touch darkened, as are the pages of the leporello. There are a couple of small closed tears to folds which have been repaired with archival tape. The colophon page has a small school library stamp from a Ohio school.
Warja Lavater (1913–2007) was a Swiss artist and illustrator noted primarily for working in the artist's books genre by creating accordion fold books that retell classic fairy tales with symbols rather than words (or even pictures). At the time of writing this work, Honegger-Lavater was living and working in New York. 120 x 175 mm (4¾ x 7 inches).

Le colophon indique qu'il s'agit d'une première édition et d'une lithographie originale du studio Emil Matthieu de Zurich. L'ouvrage est muni d'un petit crochet qui permet de le suspendre comme une œuvre d'art. Les planches sont légèrement assombries, tout comme les pages du leporello. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées aux plis qui ont été réparées avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. La page de colophon porte un petit cachet de bibliothèque scolaire d'une école de l'Ohio. Warja Lavater (1913-2007) était une artiste et illustratrice suisse connue principalement pour son travail dans le domaine des livres d'artiste en créant des livres en accordéon qui racontent les contes de fées classiques avec des symboles plutôt qu'avec des mots (ou même des images). Au moment de la rédaction de cet ouvrage, Honegger-Lavater vivait et travaillait à New York. 120 x 175 mm.

Illustrated end papers. Covers are clean and tidy, with a small patch of surface scratching to the top of the front cover. Internally clean, but fractionally darkened. Boards are in sound condition, with a little darkening / marking to them, and slight rubbing to the corners. The spine has been cracked but now repaired. Hardback in red buckram, with gilt title and decoration to front board and spine. Boards are slightly darkened and lightly soiled. Back board more so, as it has a dark patch to the lower portion; this does not affect the interior. Spine is rubbed. Inside FFEP has a neat ink hand written prize dedication from a Protestant church in North Holland. Tiny portion of top right corner of the end paper has been neatly cut out. Pages are aged at edges, from handling. There are some signs of handling / finger marks inside, but overall the book is in good condition. 136 pp., [4] hand coloured plates, each with tissue guard.
