From 1864 onwards, the "Great French Wine Blight" caused by the introduction of grape phylloxera, an aphid-like insect native to North America, decimated the French vineyards. By the late 1870's 40% of French vineyards had been lost. The solution was to graft blight resistant cuttings from American vine stock, which gained acceptance throughout the 1880's. It was into this atmosphere, that Duplessis was providing his résume of maladies of wine and their solutions.

À partir de 1864, le "grand flétrissement du vin français" causé par l'introduction du phylloxéra, un insecte ressemblant à un puceron originaire d'Amérique du Nord, a décimé les vignobles français. À la fin des années 1870, 40 % des vignobles français avaient disparu. La solution consistait à greffer des boutures résistantes au mildiou à partir de ceps de vigne américains, ce qui fut accepté tout au long des années 1880. Small bump to the top corner. Overall though a very nice copy of this wine catalogue. 24cm x 19cm.

In very good condition with fractional rubbing only. New end papers. The original green paper covers are bound in. These are somewhat foxed and a little nicked to the edges. The book itself is in good, clean, slightly darkened condition. Complete, with errata to the rear and the 20 page supplement to the rear. Several of the pages are still uncut. The three bottles are shown to the front. To the verso is a mainly blank page to write a menu on, with the title to the top. Cartoons of vineyard workers adorn the top edges. A lovely example of this wine menu, in excellent condition.

London: Mecca Ltd. First edition. A lovely copy of this 3D programme / Menu for the celebration of the 1963 awards, held on the 11th March 1963. The gold and pink pop up card features a representation of the award on the cover. inside is an illustrated design in gold white and pink. This has sections for the wine list, the evening menu and the programme. The award for Outstanding Instrumental Record for Dancing, was presented to Joe Loss. The poor chap, despite being the reward recipient, had provide two sets with his orchestra for "General dancing." The event was televised, and in a nice reversal, 45 minutes of the programme at the theatre was taken up with being filmed for the BBC. In excellent condition. There is a tiny line of loss to the pink where the 3-d cutting has affected it. Fractional creasing to folds in the pop up. Otherwise excellent. The Carl Alan Awards are presented by Theatre Dance Council International, which was founded in 1958 as a forum for the teachers of dance. The Awards are named after Carl Heimann and Alan B. Fairley, the joint chairmen of Mecca Dancing Ltd, and are regarded as 'the Oscars of the World of Dance'. Recipient Joe Loss was one of the most popular UK band leaders of the 20th century. In 1930 he formed his first professional band, which he continued to lead until 1990. In 1933, he made his first broadcast for the BBC. His recording career began the same year, working with artists like Vera Lynn and Chick Henderson. He was awarded the OBE for services to music in 1978. 21cm x 12.5cm closed.

Nantes: Maison Turcaud, 1905. A pink silk menu, with an attractive stitched design to the top third, and a menu printed in brown to the bottom two thirds. The stitched design shows an art nouveau image with a woman with a headpiece surrounded by bunches of flowers. The menu is in a poor condition, with a little fraying to the left edge, but more importantly, has a split to the middle where the item has been folded. A few small marks and stains. Still attractive. 290 by 90mm (11½ by 3½ inches).

This may be one of his original proofs for one of his culinary books, but we haven't been able to locate it if so. It is signed to the rear, with the note "Chez Mario" which may be a restaurant ? The image itself is clean and neat, but the white surround has some staining to it. This could be hidden with mounting. Now presented under a temporary passe partout. Image is 20cm x 30cm. Sheet is 30cm x 41cm. Jean-Louis Bloch-Lainé is a distinguished French photographer celebrated for his editorial, artistic, and documentary photography. His extensive career, spanning from the early 1960s onward, has influenced French visual culture in both fashion and fine art contexts. He began his work with Elle magazine in 1963. He is particularly known for his culinary photographs.

Original soft covers with some soiling to the covers. Slight nicking to the edges. The spine has been professionally restored. Internally in good condition, but with moderate foxing throughout. This report is addressed to His Excellency Mr. Rouher, Minister of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works. The author presents an in-depth study of the vineyards of southwestern France, including recommendations for improving wine production and grape quality. It covers topics such as growing methods, types of grape varieties, climatic conditions and winemaking techniques. There are 89 engraved illustrations throughout the text. The boards are somewhat darkened, with bumping to the edges. Internally, the book is in good condition, with a touch of darkening only, and a little marking to the first couple of pages. viii, 104 pages. The first 12 pages are the poem in Latin. The rest of the book is notes and commentary / translation of it. An unusual gastronomy book. A glossary in French, English and Latin is given at the beginning of the work. This has been repaired to the top corner of both pages (not affecting text). 250 by 200mm (9¾ by 7¾ inches).

This is a reworking of the "Traité de vinification" by the same author and published in 1849, and states here that it is revised and considerably augumented. This work was published as part of the "Bibliothèque de la Société des agriculteurs de France" and give vineyard owners actionable advice. vii, [i], 166 pages. 22cm x 14cm. Victor Vermorel (1848–1927), a French engineer, viticulturist, and inventor known for his spraying equipment and work on grapevine diseases.

Émile Manceau edited "Le Vigneron Champenois", the journal of the Champagne producers (later "Le Vigneron de Champagne"). From 1900 to 1929 he was also director of the Champagne Oenological Station, a viticultural laboratory at Fort Chabrol, Épernay. The station served both as a practical school of viticulture, training winegrowers in grafting techniques, and as a laboratory for studying rootstocks imported from America to combat mildew. The author deals exclusively with white wine (which is more complex than that of reds). Burgundy leather spine with simple gilt titles. Burgundy marbled boards. A little loss to the edges and corners, but overall is sound. The inside boards have some discolouration, ironically appears to be a red wine stain! The rest of the book are in very good condition, with moderate darkening to the pages, and a few minor stains / marks. Half title has a closed tear to the edge. Previous owners name to the title page.
