Paris: Maison Martinet, 1856. First edition. A hardback collection of lithographic sheets, with and engraved title and 16 sheets, each containing a number of caricatures. Harback with red linen spine and marbled boards. Yellow sheet (identical to title) is pasted onto the front board. There covers are slightly bumped and darkened, but sound. The engraved title page has been restored where an area of loss (not affecting illustrations) has been archivally repaired. The pages are overall in good condition, with some foxing / marking to the sheets, but sound. The final sheet has a small area of loss to the bottom edge. Most other copies we have seen reference have 15 sheets of lithographs - ours has 1-16. 33cm x 25.5cm. Gilbert Randon (1811-1884) was a French lithographer and caricaturist, born in Lyon. He began his career after serving in the cavalry, moving on to work as a lithographer, illustrator, and caricaturist. Randon was a cousin of the renowned photographer Nadar, who invited him to Paris in 1851 to contribute to well-known satirical publications like "Journal pour rire" and "Journal amusant." Throughout his career, Randon was known for his humorous depictions, particularly of the French army under the Second Empire.

Gilbert Randon (1811-1884) était un lithographe et caricaturiste français, né à Lyon. Il commença sa carrière après avoir servi dans la cavalerie, puis travailla comme lithographe, illustrateur et caricaturiste. A prolific author, he distinguished himself in diverse genres, from novels to plays, including portraits and pamphlets. His work, imbued with sharp social observations and satirical wit, bears witness to the upheavals of his time. René Benjamin's literary career was profoundly affected by the First World War. Seriously wounded in September 1914, he spent several months in the Tours hospital where he wrote "Gaspard," a novel that earned him the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1915. A tireless lecturer and committed polemicist, his career was marked by undeniable literary successes but also by political controversies, notably his support for Marshal Pétain during the Occupation, which brought him disgrace after the Second World War. Jean Lefort (1875-1954), was a painter, watercolorist, and illustrator, known for his dynamic compositions. Mobilized in 1914, Lefort served as a stretcher-bearer and produced an extensive body of work documenting life on the front lines. Bombay: Tata Graduate School of Social Work, 1943. First Edition. A collection of essays on important issues for social care in wartime. Edited by Kumarappa. A scarce item in itself. There are no copies available online at the time of cataloguing. This copy has a gift inscription to Lady Mountbatten. Original dust wrapper. A little marking and edge wear, with a mark particularly to the front cover. A little darkening to the wrapper. The book itself is in a good, clean condition. Slight darkening of the wartime economy pages. Gift inscription is neatly written to the front end paper. (Nb. Inscription is from the Tata Institute of Social Science - not Kumarappa himself). Edwina Mountbatten, Countess of Burma, was involved in Social Service and the St John's Ambulance during the Second World War, and remained very involved for the rest of her life. Her husband was the last Viceroy of India, and orchestrated the partition. This book was given to her about a month after partition. Jagdisan Mohandas Kumarappa (1886–1957) was an erudite scholar and a passionate social reformer. He championed the cause of social work education and criminology as the director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This was the first school of Social Work in Asia, and remains India's top school of Social work. 160 pages. 240 x 170 mm (9½ x 6¾ inches).

Paris: Castrique, 1777. A nice, original copy of this antique engraving, showing the death of Chevalier D'Assas. Designed by Casanova, and engraved by Pierre Laurent. This scarce, if rather sombre illustration appeared in two formats. We believe this to be the original format, with a later edition dedicated to the King with different text below (the engraved image is identical). 36.5cm x 45.5cm tipped onto a slightly larger backing paper. The engraving itself is in good condition. There is a light fold to the centre of the sheet, and a small closed tear to the top 2cm of the engraving. Pin holes to the bottom right corner. Overall in clean condition front and verso. The backing sheet is a little tatty to the edges. It is only tipped on by the top edge and could be trimmed or removed. The Battle of Clostercamp (Kloster Kampen) was a French victory over an Anglo-German army during the Seven Years' War.

Des trous d'épingle sont présents dans le coin inférieur droit. Dans l'ensemble, le recto et le verso sont en bon état. La feuille de support est un peu abîmée sur les bords. Il n'est fixé que par le bord supérieur et pourrait être coupé ou enlevé. La bataille de Clostercamp (Kloster Kampen) est une victoire française sur une armée anglo-allemande pendant la guerre de Sept Ans.

Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1895. First Edition. Red buckram with a deep red leather spine. The buckram boards are bright, and have a crest with a gilt "N" to the front board. The spine is somewhat rubbed, but still sound, with gilt titles to the spine. Gold detailed end papers. A gift inscription to the first blank page gives a warm message to his good comrades "Les Prins Hesse. d'Amsterdam." Unfortunately we are unable to identify the rather flamboyant signature, but it was signed in Le Vésinet (near Paris). Although it seems to be in 1891, presumably it is an elongated 5. In addition to the dozens of illustrations, including paintings, busts, caricatures etc. are 22 full page engraved "hors texte" plates each with tissue guards. The book is internally clean and tidy throughout, without significant marking. IV, 500. pages. 29.5cm x 20cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 564709.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1945. First edition in scarce dust wrapper. Brainsfather was a popular British caricaturist, who has created "Old Bill" in the first world war. In the Second World War, he served as a cartoonist with the American Army, and this book is one of the results. Wrapper is darkened, and with some nicking and chipping to the edges. Still reasonably clean and attractive. The book itself is clean. The cartoons here, are drawn from his work that first appeared in "Stars and Stripes" magazine. The book was clearly printed just at the end of the war in Europe. To the colophon is a cartoon of Hirohito, labelled "He's next (and he knows it)". Unpaginated but circa 100 pages. 23cm x 15.5cm.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a servi comme dessinateur dans l'armée américaine, et ce livre est l'un des résultats de son travail. La jaquette est foncée et présente quelques entailles et éraflures sur les bords. Elle reste toutefois raisonnablement propre et attrayante. Le livre lui-même est propre. Les caricatures présentées ici sont tirées de son travail initialement publié dans le magazine « Stars and Stripes ». Le livre a clairement été imprimé juste à la fin de la guerre en Europe. Le colophon comporte une caricature de Hirohito, intitulée « Il est le prochain et il le sait ». Non paginé, mais environ 100 pages. 23 cm x 15,5 cm.

Paris: Chez Nyon, Fils, Quay del Augustins, 1725. Contemporary full leather binding, with six raised bands to the spine. Five panels decorated with gilt devices, and the 6th with a burgundy and gilt label. Marbled end papers. Complete with 34 folding plates. There is a curious vandalism to the title page and dedication page. An early owner has crossed out the name of Le Duc du Maine, who the book was dedicated to, and has coloured in portions of the Duc's crest. In the same ink is written "La livre ma coute 15 denier" (my book which cost 15 denier). To the following page (the dedication) again the Duc's crest has been defaced, along with his name, and several of the titles which pertained to him. The Duc was the legitimised son of Louis XIV, but despite this, was disliked by many who still considered him a bastard. The boards and spine are clean, A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with a touch of the cover rubbed. Inside, the book and plates are clean and tidy other than the sabotage to the Duc! Belidor (1698 - 1761) was a Frenchman born in Catalonia, an artillery professor at La Fère, whose work on artillery, engineering and hydraulics was widely disseminated in the 18th century. (24),560,(32) pp. 250 x 200 mm (9¾ x 7¾ inches). Reliure plein cuir de l'époque, avec six nerfs au dos. Cinq panneaux décorés d'appareils dorés, et le 6ème d'une étiquette bordeaux et dorée. Feuilles de garde marbrées. Complet avec 34 assiettes pliantes. Il y a un curieux vandalisme sur la page de titre et la page de dédicace. Un ancien propriétaire a barré le nom du Duc du Maine, auquel le livre était dédié, et a colorié certaines parties de l'écusson du Duc. Dans la même encre est écrit « La livre ma coute 15 deniers » (mon livre qui coûtait 15 deniers). À la page suivante (la dédicace), l'écusson du duc a encore été effacé, ainsi que son nom et plusieurs des titres qui le concernaient. Le duc était le fils légitimé de Louis XIV, mais malgré cela, il était détesté par beaucoup qui le considéraient encore comme un bâtard. Les plats et le dos sont propres, Un petit choc en tête et en queue du dos, avec une touche de la couverture frottée. A l'intérieur, le livre et les planches sont propres et bien rangés à part le sabotage du Duc ! Belidor (1698 - 1761) était un Français né en Catalogne, professeur d'artillerie à La Fère, dont les travaux sur l'artillerie, l'ingénierie et l'hydraulique ont été largement diffusés au XVIIIe siècle. Paris: J Dumoulin, 1944. First edition of this pictorial account of Oflag II D - a camp in the early stages of the second world war in Gross-Born (now Borne Sulinowo, Poland). Its inmates included French officers. phototypes by Georges Duval, Lithography by Mourlot Freres and colouring by Beaufumé. Although in many ways a decent copy, the paper spine is missing, so that the work is entirely disbound, with a front and rear soft cover. These are somewhat darkened. Inside, the pages are in good condition. Many pages uncut. Beautiful colour and single colour illustrations throughout. Text by Commander Mabileau, Lieutenant Dubout, Adrien Sadoul, Private Brunet, Lieutenant Canat de Chizy, Lieutenant Vidal, Charles Caussade, Lieutenant JL Aussel, Lieutenant Peretti de la Rocca. The work includes both illustrations and caricatures of life in the camp. 72 pages. 33cm x 35.5cm.

A memoir written by Douglas Valder Duff, once a British merchant seaman, Royal Navy officer, police officer, and author of over 100 books, including memoirs and books for children. Red cloth hardback book, with a photographic b/w frontis and several other b/w plates throughout. Dust jacket is lightly rubbed and soiled, but in good shape. Book in very good shape, with some light foxing inside, and to page edges. Also includes a loosely inserted letter from a couple called Mac and Phyllis gifting the book to their friends for Xmas 1954. The letter reveals that Mac was going with his friend Fatty Duff - as the letter calls him - to Palestine in the following February at the request of the Israeli government. 224 pages 220 x 145 mm (8¾ x 5¾ inches)

Special issue of the magazine Chantecler in homage to Georges Merry, songwriter and resistance fighter, who died in after being deported during the occupation. A lovely collection of prose, poems and satire, each accompanied by a very art deco portrait of the author by the caricaturist Lebon. Blue felt covers embossed with silver text. Generally in very good, clean condition, but with rubbing and felt loss to the top edge of the rear cover. There is a faux wax seal (on plastic) attached to a velvet tab which hangs from the volume. Internally clean and attractive throughout. A very stylised Art Deco work full of Lebon's striking portraits. Offsetting / browning to the contents page, Otherwise clean and tidy throughout. Much of the material is dealing with the second world war and the occupation. 50 pages. 34.5cm x 27cm. André Lebon (1918-1996) was a French caricaturist and journalist. He became known primarily for his caricatures of theatre actors and political personalities.

Il s'est surtout fait connaître par ses caricatures d'acteurs de théâtre et de personnalités politiques.

Paris: Chez Martinet, 1817. First edition. An attractive hand coloured caricature in the Calicot tradition. Three men in a Paris pleasure garden argue over who will pay the bill. "Calicot" was a mocking nickname for young drapers' shop clerks (commis-marchands en nouveautés) in Paris around 1817. After Napoleon's defeat, with military glory no longer available to aspire to, these clerks became notorious for playing dress-up: donning half-military coats, spurs, and cocked hats on their Sundays off and strutting through pleasure gardens like the Jardin Beaujon (famous for its roller-coasters, which is why one appears in the background here). Publishers such as Martinet mocked these clerks as vain, effeminate imitators of soldiers who'd never actually fought, deflating their pretensions to gentility and martial status. The lithograph was by Charles de Lasteyrie, but the original illustrator is unknown. Printed to stiff paper, the image is nicely coloured and clean. The paper is somewhat darkened. There is a closed tear to the bottom edge that could be hidden with framing. Image 13.5cm x 16.5cm. Sheet is 24 x 35 cm.

Trois hommes, dans un jardin d'agrément parisien, se disputent pour savoir qui paiera l'addition. « Calicot » était un surnom moqueur donné aux jeunes commis de magasin de drapiers (commis-marchands en nouveautés) à Paris vers 1817. Après la défaite de Napoléon, la gloire militaire n'étant plus un objectif accessible, ces commis devinrent tristement célèbres pour leurs déguisements : ils enfilaient des manteaux semi-militaires, des éperons et des chapeaux à trois cornes lors de leurs dimanches de congé et se pavanaient dans des jardins d'agrément comme le Jardin Beaujon (célèbre pour ses montagnes russes, ce qui explique pourquoi on en voit une à l'arrière-plan ici). Des éditeurs tels que Martinet se moquaient de ces commis, les qualifiant d'imitateurs vaniteux et efféminés de soldats qui n'avaient jamais réellement combattu, réduisant ainsi à néant leurs prétentions à la noblesse et au statut martial. La lithographie est l'œuvre de Charles de Lasteyrie, mais l'illustrateur original reste inconnu. Imprimée sur du papier rigide, l'image est joliment colorée et nette. Le papier est quelque peu foncé. Il y a une déchirure fermée sur le bord inférieur qui pourrait être dissimulée par un encadrement. Image : 13,5 cm x 16,5 cm. Feuille : 24 cm x 35 cm.

Warsaw: Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza "Czytelnik". A very nice set of these Polish political caricatures from 1951. Four language edition, with text in Polish, Russian, French and English. This is the Second Edition of this work, first published the previous year. Paris: Marillier, C1784. First edition. An original engraving from the surrender of the British forces in America during the war of Independence. "Reddition de l'armée du Lord Cornwallis" is depicting the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, with the French and American forces assembled in a formal military scene. Cornwallis is shown to the left, surrendering to George Washington. In fact this was propaganda. General Cornwallis claimed to be ill and was not in attendance. General O'Hara presented Cornwallis's sword to Washington. This occurred on October 19th 1781. The lettering states that the design was drawn by P.-C. Marillier and executed under the direction of Suntach. This engraving is virtually identical to that published by Francois Godefroy and Nicolas Ponce, which was recorded as "after Marillier." We cannot be certain if this was before the Godefroy / Ponce issue, but the lack of any other engraver's information would suggest it may be. The work by Godefroy "Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis d'Amérique" was the first French book to mention the United States on the title page (Sabin 68421). Visible engraving is 17.5cm x 20.5cm. This is under passe partout and glass in a gilt painted wooden frame measuring 28cm x 32cm. Clément-Pierre Marillier was a French draftsman and engraver specializing in intaglio and etching. He was a close friend of Nicolas Ponce, who frequently engraved his work. Together they supported the French Revolution. Marillier died in 1808. The edges of the wodden frame has a little rubbing, but the engraving is in excellent condition.

Covers are in good clean condition. The book itself is in excellent condition, with just a touch of marking / darkening. An attractive work of children's propaganda. 32 pages. Paris: N/P. A skilfully executed ink and coloured sketch done by Lesur in July 1918. This is a tricky sketch to place, and there are two options. Firstly - the date the artist has written is correct, and this is showing a Bastille Day parade on the 14th July 1918. This is certainly possible, as there were significant celebrations that day in Paris, but with the war still a long way from being won, the focus was on patriotic support rather than military parades. It is unlikely that Scottish regiments were parading in Paris on this day, as they were preparing for The Marne Offensive, which occurred a week later. The other alternative, is that this sketch is commemorating the "fêtes de la Victoire" held on July 14th 1919 and that the artist has wrongly dated the work. Scottish regiments certainly took part on this parade. The 15th (Scottish) Division and the 51st (Highland) Division were part of the British XXII Corps. Both stationed near to Paris and involved in The Marne Offensive. Good, clean sketch on paper. The paper is slightly darkened, and there are a couple of light foxing spots. The colour is quite subtle, but present. A simple celebration of victory by a significant French artist. The frame is an ornate gilt frame, with glass. In very good condition, with a few bumps / nicks to the the frame only. Overall in very good condition. Sketch is 19cm x 26cm, Frame is 25cm x 31cm. Henri Victor Lesur (1863-1937), was a French artist born in Roubaix. Lesur trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was a pupil of François Flameng. He was active in the French art scene, particularly towards the end of the 19th century, and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1887 to 1895. Lesur's work is characterized by elegant genre scenes and portraits, often inspired by the style of 18th-century French artists such as Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard. Lesur's paintings often depicted scenes reminiscent of bygone luxury and playful Parisian society, created as a form of escapism for viewers and collectors. He continued to produce art until his death in 1937. Lesur's work is sometimes signed as V. H. Lesur.

The binding is in snakeskin, (probably faux snakeskin), with purple ribbon binding intact. Japanese titles to the outside and image of soldiers helmet and straw hat. 2 red & black maps, (one of Cha-Pei & one entitled "map of Sino-Japanese distuarbances (sic), Shanghai") + 48 pp. of black and white photographs depicting the Japanese invasion of Shanghai. Captions are in Japanese and English. Overall in excellent condition. There is a tiny loss to the top and bottom edge of the spine. Very small split to the binding edge. A couple of marks to the cover - but overall in excellent condition. The work is produced in folds, and is uncut (for the text) and the plates are produced on a Japon card. Soft wrapper. Held in a stiff card slipcase. Overall in excellent condition, with a touch of darkening and creasing to the spine of the wrapper only. The rest of the work is in beautiful condition. An evocative collection of water colour illustrations of the generals and men who had just fought the Second World War. Some of the badges of units are also reproduced, along with some of the messages from generals at the end of the war (and naturally de Gaulle's message from the 18th June 1940). 24cm x 16cm.

Under glass in a dark wooden frame with a gilt inner edge. Sheet from a series depicting the lower ranks of the Imperial Guard. The water colour, upon which this lithography was made, was presented at an exhibition in 1889. Frame and print are both in excellent condition. There are a few flecks under the glass. The visible area is 44cm x 20cm. The frame is 61cm x 36cm. Dmitri Alexandrovich Benckendorff (1845-1917 some sources state 1919). Russian / German Baltic artist and court official. Known mostly as an amateur artist and society figure.
